Greetings Everyone,

Your new 11,000 square foot Senior Center is nearing completion! There is a plethora of exciting activity

happening behind the barriers. The new parking lot final pavement was completed the week of September

22. Shortly after the pavement was completed, the final railings, striping and landscaping were begun on

the exterior of the building. On the interior, it is an entirely different collection of events. The corridor in the

original building will be receiving new carpet and paint, to match the new wing, in the next few weeks. The

color palette is so inviting. The ceiling grids have been completed on the second floor and have started on

the first floor. Final painting on the second floor will begin in the next several weeks, along with the finish

flooring. The new Café is looking stunning, with its circular soffit and fireplace. The mechanical and electri-

cal contractors are busy installing light switches and lighting all over the building. The new emergency gen-

erator is up and running this week, ready for all those pesky Nor’easters that are just around the cor-

ner. The final millwork has been arriving steadily and we couldn’t be happier with the final feel of each space

designed by your building committee. Make sure you thank them for their countless hours of volunteering.

DIRECTOR’S CORNER

The month of October is a beautiful time of year when we begin to see the leaves changing colors, pump-

kins and mums decorating doorsteps, Octoberfest celebrations and a slight chill in the air. We recognize

several holidays such as Yom Kippur, Columbus Day, Child Health Day and Halloween. Did you also know

that October 1st is the International Day of Older Persons? The composition of the world population has

changed dramatically and between 1950 and 2010, life expectancy worldwide rose from 46 to 68 years. Globally,

there were 703 million persons aged 65 or over as of 2019. According to our town clerk, Marshfield’s senior popu-

lation of those age 60 and over is at 8,065 people which represents 32 % of our town’s population. We hope

you enjoy and take part in our Lifelong Learning this month as well as our special events and programs. It is

a great month to check our outdoor recreation area and play a game of Pickleball, ping pong or bocce.

The building expansion is coming along nicely and expected to finish sometime in November. Please let us

know if there are any special programs or services you would like us to offer in the future.

A very happy autumn season to all! Regards, Carol Hamilton, Marshfield Council on Aging

inspiring. You'll learn about the ecology of several different coastal habitats, including mud flats, salt

marshes, and dunes, and the plants and animals uniquely adapted to live there. What’s more, unique as-

that depicts historic events and locations such as

the Landing of the Pilgrims, Linking the Transconti-

nental Railroad, and Washington Crossing the Del-

aware. A slideshow will be presented on antique

Historic Staffordshire Pottery. The show will focus

on antique pottery created between 1780 and

1900, and illustrating events in American history.

The presentation will recount noteworthy events in

American history and the charming rendition of

those events by Staffordshire potters. This pottery

is generally blue and white, and less commonly

mulberry and white. However some examples are

in other color combinations. The speaker will be

antiques writer Bob Jackman. The slideshow pro-

gram will be offered on CABLE TV and on the IN-

TERNET. To watch on your television, tune into

Channel 13 for Comcast customers or Channel 34

for Verizon customers. To watch on the Internet,

call the Senior Center at 781-834-5581 to obtain a

link that will be active for 48 hours after the initial

broadcast.

2021 MEDICARE OPEN ENROLLMENT

OCTOBER 15 DECEMBER 7

It’s hard to believe that time of year is rolling

around again! Open Enrollment is the time of

year that Medicare Beneficiaries should review

and possibly change their drug plan or Medicare

advantage plan. Due to the unknown changing

environment of the virus and variants, we will

once again be doing appointments over the

phone. To get an appointment, please fill out the

information sheet ON THE ADJACENT PAGE and

we will get back to you with an appointment

time. Please be patient on waiting for a return

call. We will get to you as soon as possible, but

may take up to 7-10 business days. When you

tell us what plan you currently have, be as specif-

ic as possible. Many of the companies (Wellcare,

Silver Scripts, Humana etc.) have multiple plans.

It’s helpful to know, for example, if you have the

Wellcare Value scripts or the Wellcare Wellness

plan. Again, we will not be able to help non-

Marshfield residents. Call your local COA or the

regional SHINE office at 508-946-2490 for assis-

tance. Thank you once again for your trust and

patience! We truly hope you have all been well

and look forward to speaking with you!

children which consisted of naming

"Lucy the Lobster Baby" an adorable

stuffed lobster toy and another great

success for the winner, a lovely little girl.

It was such a great opportunity to show Marshfield

residents, of all ages how the Marshfield COA sup-

ports not only Senior Citizens of Marshfield with so

many wonderful classes and events but how we,

the Marshfield COA Boosters, support the Senior

Center financially when they need something that

is above what is appropriated in the town budget.

Thanks to the Committee whose decorating skills

made our tent one of the most attractive at the

event, and the Booster Board members who

staffed the tent all day and for those who stopped

by our tent and supported this networking and

fundraising event.

If you have not renewed your 2021 membership,

time is running out. The Marshfield COA Boosters

are available to meet the financial request of the

Director where extra support is needed for the

Marshfield Senior Center. A form can be obtained

from the front desk. Please fill it out to renew

your membership. We can manage cash or check.

We are a membership organization and rely heavi-

ly on membership dues and donations for our rev-

enue. If you have never been a member, please

consider joining and help us reach this year’s

membership goal of $18,500. Also, 0.5% of your

Amazon purchase prices will be donated to the

Boosters when you order through smile.amazon and

choose Marshfield COA Boosters. For membership

questions or application, please call Steve Rhodes,

Vice-President and Membership Chairman at 781-

422-4644.

WATCH FOR THE BOOSTERS

NEW WEBSITE!

It’s exciting to announce that by

next month the Boosters will have

their very own website. By the next

issue of the Link, we’ll have a new

website address to share with you. The Boosters

have considered creating a website for a long time

and now, thanks to the generosity of the Cook

Family who are underwriting the cost of develop-

ment, it is becoming a reality. The local firm, Im-

pact Marketing, is working with the Booster Board

to design a website to improve visibility and ac-

cess to the Booster organization, heighten aware-

ness of fundraisers and other activities, and accept

electronic membership renewals and donations.

You can still drop off membership renewals in the

lobby mailbox but the website offers added con-

venience for many. Our website will provide a

safe, simple, and secure method to donate to our

beloved Senior Center. Watch for information

about the launch of the website and our electronic

address in next month’s Link.

*Islam and the West-Past, Present and the Future w/Junaid Yasin—Islam/Muslims and the Christian World

have interacted intensely and intimately over the last 1400 years. Conflicts and cooperation have varied depend-

ing on geography and time. Sometimes the Christians were dominant and sometimes the Muslims were domi-

nant. Some areas moved permanently into the Islamic sphere of influence and some places changed hands multi-

ple times. The Muslim influence grew rapidly starting in the seventh century and remained a more prosperous

zone of influence well through the crusades. Starting in about the 15

th

century the Christian West began to ex-

pand its influence and by the early 18

th

century was the dominant power. This domination of the Christian West

has been almost unchallenged for about 200 years. The relationship between the 1.6 billion plus Muslims and the

larger Christian world is now in flux in the early 21

st

century. Other powers, primarily China and Russia, are chal-

lenging the West. The future is never certain and how the West and the Muslims interact will affect both groups.

We will explore possible future paths based on this history – a perspective often not presented to a western audi-

ence. Tuesdays from 10:30 am-12:00 noon, (four sessions) October 12, 19, 26

and November 2 @ Senior Center

Multi-Purpose Room. Cost $25

vice of choice (i.e. smartphone, tablet or laptop) so they can practice the skills along with instructor demonstra-

tion. Thursdays from 10:30 am – 11:30 (4 sessions) October 7, 14, 21, & 28 @ Senior Center Multi-Purpose

Room. Cost $25

tural upheaval. This conflict generated intense creativity on both sides of the war. Please join us as we explore
