WAGGA WAGGA CITY COUNCIL Issue 20

Weekly information from us to you

Wagga Wagga diners are set to benefit from the rollout of the Scores on Doors program, a star rating system designed to help consumers better understand the standard of food safety in the retail food business sector.

Joining the state-wide program is a great opportunity for the many Wagga Wagga businesses that work hard to comply with legislation, to collectively promote

their high standards to locals and visitors alike.

“The purpose of the voluntary Scores on Doors initiative is to benefit the consumer and the business by improving transparency and accountability,” Council’s Environment and Recreation Services Manager Mark Gardiner said.

“The new program is aimed at informing consumers about food hygiene and assists diners in making informed choices about where to eat or shop.”

The reward star rating system is built on the existing inspection process and depending on how well

a business performs, a certificate will be issued by Council’s authorised Environmental Health Officers (EHO) who carry out food service business inspections.

The result is then displayed in a highly visible place to customers, usually in the business’s front window or door.

A business is assessed against a standardised food safety checklist and assigned a star rating; 5 stars is Excellent, 4 stars is Very Good and 3 stars is Good.

Wagga Wagga City Council’s commitment to environmental sustainability has again been rewarded at the annual Keep NSW Beautiful Tidy Towns Awards, held in Nundle last weekend.

Council’s 230kW Co-generation Project at the Oasis Aquatic Centre earned Council the Energy Efficiency Award.

The co-generation system will save Council about $260,000 every year, with an estimated 40% reduction of greenhouse emissions.

It’s also the second time in three years that Wagga Wagga has won the Overall Tidy Towns Sustainable Communities award for the over 25,000 population category.

This recognition comes on the back of a 10-year Sustainability Award given to Council at the recent Green Globe gala awards ceremony at Parliament House in Sydney.

The Wagga Wagga Tidy Town Sustainable Community Committee works hard all year round to promote best practices, and it has paid off with a total of five awards at the 2014 Keep NSW Beautiful Tidy Towns Awards presentation.

“What this proves is that, with strong support from Council, local communities groups, schools and organisations we are effectively cooperating on all aspects of what makes a great place to live, and that can be a challenge in large towns,” Chair of the Wagga Wagga Tidy Town Sustainable Community Committee John Rumens said.

“All of the entrants and winners from Wagga Wagga should be proud of what they have achieved and I hope that they’re success encourages more of the community get involved into the future.”

Homeowners and renovators in Wagga Wagga are being reminded of how they can benefit from the Householders Asbestos Disposal Trial Scheme.

As part of National Asbestos Awareness Month, Wagga Wagga City Council is urging anyone with a home built before 1987 to learn about the risks and procedures of dealing with asbestos.

Council secured grant funding through the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) to participate in the Householders Asbestos Disposal Scheme in July, which is part of the NSW Government’s $465.7 million dollar Waste Less, Recycle More initiative.

The EPA is providing funding to a number of Council’s across NSW, of which Wagga Wagga City Council is the only Council outside the Waste Levy paying area of NSW to secure funding, to deliver pilot projects to make the disposal of small amounts of asbestos from home demolition or renovation jobs easier and cheaper for householders.

“Residents of the LGA will be able to register to be part of the trial scheme which will allow them to dispose of asbestos from their property for free, provided certain conditions are met,” Director Infrastructure Services Heinz Kausche said.

“The scheme applies to bonded asbestos only, not asbestos contaminated soils and asbestos contaminated construction and demolition materials.”

Once registered the scheme allows two options for the removal of asbestos from their property.

“Householders can engage a licensed WorkCover contractor to remove a maximum of 5 tonnes of asbestos, once only, from their property,” Mr Kausche explained.

“The licensed contractor will then be required to

dispose of the asbestos at the Gregadoo Waste Management Centre which is the only waste facility in the LGA licensed to accepted asbestos waste.

“The second option is that householders, in accordance with WorkCover advice, can remove up to 10m2 of bonded asbestos themselves, ensuring Work, Health & Safety guidelines are followed.

Householders are required to pre-purchase an asbestos removal kit from Council which contains all the necessary personal protective equipment & bags to ensure the removal work can be completed safely.

“The bonded asbestos must be disposed of, along with the kit, at the Gregadoo Waste Management Centre, ensuring that all conditions have been met to guarantee free disposal.”

The Householders Asbestos Disposal Scheme provides a significant opportunity for householders to cost effectively and safely remove asbestos from their homes.

It is anticipated the scheme will help reduce exposure to asbestos fibres and combat illegal dumping of asbestos materials.

This project is a NSW EPA Waste Less, Recycle More initiative funded from the waste levy.

continued from page 1The scoring system is based on

the accrual of points (effectively demerits) where food safety issues are identified. Therefore, the lower the points accrued, the higher the rating will be.

“The program also promotes competition and encourages businesses to strive for the highest hygiene score through good hygiene and food safety practices,” Mr Gardiner continued.

“This helps reduce food safety risks and illness from food, so you can enjoy your meal with greater confidence.

“We are confident that the new program will be well received because it is about highlighting eateries that are performing well and those that are achieving high standards of hygiene.

“This is a great program to acknowledge the hard work of food businesses within our Local

Government Area!”Eight food outlets are already on

board, with O’Brien’s Hot Bake Bakery the first to sign up to the program.

“I wanted to get involved because customers want to know that they are going into a good and clean establishment,” bakery owner Peter O’Brien said.

“It will help us ensure that we are meeting the highest standards, and is a continuation of the good relationship we already have with Council to help us improve conditions and fix things up.

“I’m always looking to improve, and to be measured against the Score for Doors system is a great advantage.”

Work to rehabilitate the pavement along Inglewood Road has commenced.

The section of road between Mitchell Road and Bakers Lane will be closed to all westbound traffic from 7am to 6pm, Monday to Saturday, for the duration of the works. Local traffic will have access for the duration of the project which is expected to take approximately 4 weeks.

Clearly signposted detours will be in place and motorists are asked to take alternate routes and allow extra time to get to the airport.

This is one of several urban road renewal projects that Council is undertaking in and around Wagga Wagga over the next few months.

Wagga Wagga City Council would like to thank residents and motorists for their understanding and patience during the works.

Imagine standing on stage during a live performance by the Australian Chamber Orchestra: cutting-edge audio-visual installation ‘ACO Virtual’ takes you there, right here in Wagga Wagga! Built using state-of-the-art technology, ‘ACO Virtual’ features projections of thirteen ACO musicians surrounding you on all sides,

with the sound of each player coming from the direction of their projection.

On now at Wagga Wagga Art Gallery, this installation is not to be missed. Hurry as it finishes Sunday 23 November!

It is now even easier to recycle in Wagga Wagga with brand new recycling bins installed at the Regional Airport.

The new bins arrived just in time for National Recycling Week (10-16 November).

“The airport is very proactive with recycling and staff took the initiative themselves to request the new bins,” Wagga Wagga City Council Environmental Education Officer Alice Kent said.

“They are the latest addition in the expanding network of recycling stations that Council is providing in public places, such as Baylis Street.”

So the next time you visit Wagga Wagga Regional Airport make sure you think before you bin it!

There is also a push within Council to recycle with similar waste options installed in the Civic Centre offices in June.

“There are bins for waste, mixed recyclables, paper and organic matter,” Miss Kent explained.

Members of the community are being encouraged to nominate local sporting heroes to be inducted into the Sporting Hall of Fame.

Nominations are now open, and if successful the new candidates will join world class athletes such as Wayne Carey, Mark Taylor and Steve Mortimer in the Hall of Fame.

This round of nominations is also a rare opportunity to recognise hard working Local Legends, with the category only opening up every three years.

“Wagga Wagga is known as the City of Good Sports and there are many sports people who have reached the pinnacles of their careers and are deserving of a nomination for induction into the Sporting Hall of Fame,” Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Rod Kendall said.

“Acceptance into the Sporting Hall of Fame reflects the valuable contribution the nominee has made to his or her chosen sport and to the City of Wagga Wagga.”

Located at the Museum of the Riverina Botanic Gardens site, Wagga Wagga City Council established the Sporting Hall of Fame

in 1993 to recognise the outstanding achievement of Wagga Wagga athletes who have reached the highest level of their chosen sport.

“The Local Legend category is also an important recognition of tireless local sporting coordinators, advocates and volunteers who work hard behind the scenes to make sure Wagga Wagga continues to provide an excellent base for sports people to establish careers in their chosen sport,” Mayor Kendall added.

Nomination forms for Sporting Hall of Fame inductees are available from the Civic Centre Customer Service desk or online at www.wagga.nsw.gov.au/sportinghalloffame

Nominations close at 5pm, Friday 5 December.

Following the close of nominations, applications will be assessed by the Sporting Hall of Fame Panel.

The announcement of any Hall of Fame inductees and Local Legends will be made at the Australia Day Awards ceremony 2015, Saturday 24th January.
