Course Description

597697 Special Topics Spirituality in Counseling Three semester hours This course is an experiential and didactic investigation of our spiritual dimension as persons and of methods of assessment of and intervention regarding spiritual and religious issues in counseling and psychotherapy

General Course Information

Clients often bring up spiritual beliefs and dilemmas in counseling Counselors who have not been prepared to address these issues often simply ignore or distract the client from these topics due to their own sense of an inability to appropriately address the issues Counselors who have been prepared for these issues are more likely to address them in an effective and respectful manner with clients This course provides opportunities for personal and professional development for those who seek to deepen their knowledge and experience of their own spiritual beliefs and values and of how to integrate spirituality and religion into counseling practice

Student Learning Outcomes

Students will become skilled in the fourteen competencies outlined by the Association for Religious Ethical and Spiritual Values in Counseling (ASERVIC 2009)

1 The professional counselor can describe the similarities and differences between

spirituality and religion including the basic beliefs of various spiritual systems major world religions agnosticism and atheism

2 The professional counselor recognizes that the clientrsquos beliefs (or absence of beliefs) about spirituality andor religion are central to his or her worldview and can influence psychosocial functioning

3 The professional counselor actively explores his or her own attitudes beliefs and values about spirituality andor religion

4 The professional counselor continuously evaluations the influence of his or her own spiritual andor religious beliefs and values on the client and the counseling process

5 The professional counselor can identify the limits of his or her understanding of the clientrsquos spiritual andor religious perspective and is acquainted with religious and spiritual resources including leaders who can be avenues for consultation and to whom the counselor can refer

6 The professional counselor can describe and apply various models of spiritual andor religious development and their relationship to human development

7 The professional counselor responds to client communications about spirituality andor religion with acceptance and sensitivity

8 The professional counselor uses spiritual andor religious concepts that are consistent with the clientrsquos spiritual andor religious perspectives and that are acceptable to the client

13 The professional counselor is able to (a) modify therapeutic techniques to include a clientrsquos spiritual andor religious perspectives and (b) utilize spiritual andor religious practices as techniques when appropriate and acceptable to a clientrsquos viewpoint

14 The professional counselor can therapeutically apply theory and current research supporting the inclusion of a clientrsquos spiritual andor religious perspectives and practices

CONTENT AREAS include but are not limited to the following At a minimum this course will cover

1 Basic awareness of major spiritual and religious practices and beliefs 2 Personal reflection on counselorrsquos spiritual and religious beliefs values biases

assumptions and practices 3 Knowledge and familiarity with the ASERVIC Spirituality Competencies and

how to appropriately implement them to incorporate spirituality and religion respectfully and ethically into counseling

4 Experiential learning about spiritual and religious beliefs and practices to include exposure to different spiritual amp religious ideas and experiences and personal reflection on these experiences towards embracing spiritual inclusion and accepting spiritualreligious diversity

thinking and online dialogue (ie sharing your reactions opinions disagreements questions) via discussion forums Your open participation in online discussions is essential to your learning and final grade For assignments contact the instructor well in advance of due dates with any questions- do not expect last minute responses the day assignments are due- prepare ahead of time Also use best practices of APA 6 writing style for all written assignments Many online resources such as the OWL at Purdue APA website exist to help you create quality papers- please use them As this is a fully online course it will require you to read daily and participate in online discussions regularly You may work ahead but please come back to online forums to participate in those discussions

GRADING Final grades in this course will be based on the following scale

A = 90-100 or 180-200 pts

B = 80-89 or 160-179 pts

C = 70-79 or 140-159 pts

D = 60-69 or 120-139 pts

F = 59 or Below or 119 pts and below

All assignments must be uploaded to eCollege by midnight on the due date listed on course calendar in the appropriate Drop Box Alternatively you can

As this is a cross listed course doctoral students have additional expectations they must comply with (longer papers) detailed in the assessments below

1 Weekly Readings and Review of Other Learning Resources Each week you will

be responsible for completing a series of readings from both texts and reviewing any supplemental materials (videos etc) if any connected to the topics Course readings are listed on the course calendar in the syllabus and other materials will be posted under the corresponding week or under the Doc Sharing tab on eCollege You must have read and reviewed these materials to complete online discussions As this is an online course you must stay on top of the reading on your own- this is essential You are welcome to work ahead as you feel capable but reading and material assignments are designed to be done daily

2 Online Discussions as indicated on the course calendar you will complete a minimum of three weekly discussion posts on eCollege connected to the readings

that week from both texts andor any supplemental resources (videos etc) You are expected to post your initial post (IP) by midnight mid-week corresponding to the date on the course calendar You are expected to post your response posting (RP) to two of your classmates by midnight end of week corresponding to the date on the calendar For full points responses need to be quality meaning in depth and thorough thoughtful refer to the weekrsquos readings relevant issues in the news information obtained from other sources andor ideas expressed in other class membersrsquo postings Where appropriate you should use references to support your position Each IP is worth 10 points and each RP is worth 5 points for a total of 20 points per discussion You are of course encouraged to post or respond more than 3 times each week so we can foster a dialogue in the absence of meeting in class I will be monitor all discussion posts and commenting some too Discussions will be graded based on the following rubric

Responses are quality answer question(s) or respond to otherrsquos posts thoroughly and in sufficient detail

Responses refer to weekrsquos readings amp resources

As appropriate responses refer to other relevant news or other outside sources offering references as needed

Responses are respectful of otherrsquos opinions beliefs or ideas shared in each post

Responses demonstrate a willingness to openly explore the breadth of spirituality amp religion of othersclients and to tolerate alternative spiritualreligious beliefs and practices

3 Spiritual Genogram and Autobiography Construct your own spiritual genogram

and write a spiritual autobiography (please see Horton-Parker amp Fawcett pp 46 -48 and Frame pp 104-108 These documents are posted to eCollege under Doc Sharing) Conduct a personal spiritual life review and draw on in-class readings and online discussions to identify the significant events (ie people places historicallife events mystical experiences and moments of transformation) that have contributed to your current spiritualreligious perspective Discuss how your current perspective may facilitate and hinder your work as a counselor as well as areas of growth for you This paper should be approximately 8-9 pages in length (for COUN 597 students) or 10-12 pages in length (for COUN 697 students) and should follow full APA 6 formatting including use of in-text headings citations and reference page Papers should be typed using single-sided pages double-spaced and include a title page references and appendix for the genogram (you can use any computer program to complete the genogram including Genopro Paint Draw etc but you must copy and paste the full genogram into your appendix of the paper for me to see) You MUST organize your paper by using in-text headings throughout it- I recommend turning the rubric sections into headings The Grading rubric is below

Complete a quality thorough spiritual genogram (using info in Horton-Parker amp Fawcett amp Frame documents on eCollege as guidance) Do this before writing your paper so it serves as a guide for your discussion

Thoroughly discuss your spiritual autobiography (discussion of significant experiences people places mystical experiences historicallife events and moments of transformation etc) leading up to your current spiritualreligious perspective

Thoroughly discuss how your current perspective may facilitate or hinder your work as a counselor

Thoroughly discuss areas of needed spiritualreligious growth in your life and specific to your future work in counseling

Provide a good summaryconclusion to the essay

Appropriately follow APA 6 formatting grammar spelling and other writing (MUST use in text headings to organize paper)

4 Final Interfaith Interview Service and Paper Conduct an interfaith interview

with a clergyperson or spiritualreligious leader from a faith tradition (or non-faith tradition as the case may be) totally different from your own or any you are familiar with attend at least one of their services and write a paper based upon the information gleaned from the interview as well as your observations of and reflections upon the service Please use the Sample Interfaith Interview Questionnaire at the end of the syllabus to conduct the interview You should also incorporate the questions found in Frame (2003 pp87-88 posted on eCollege under Doc Sharing tab) for visiting a place of worship and interviewing a religious leader The intervieweefaith tradition must be approved by the instructor prior to the interview and you will need to seek out the different faith tradition and ldquocold callrdquo email etc the interviewee on your own to seek their permission too so begin looking ASAP Being the holidays you may get to experience some unique services of other faith traditions than at other times of the year In addition to the interfaith interview information your paper should include a literature review section in which you will discuss additional research (at least 6 articles not included in any of the readings for the course) from current scholarly journals regarding topics pertinent to counseling individuals from the faith tradition of your interviewee The paper should be approximately 8-9 pages COUN 597 or 10-12 pages (COUN 697) and follow full APA 6 formatting too You MUST organize your paper by using headings throughout it- I recommend turning the rubric sections into headings Grading rubric is below

Course Description

597697 Special Topics Spirituality in Counseling Three semester hours This course is an experiential and didactic investigation of our spiritual dimension as persons and of methods of assessment of and intervention regarding spiritual and religious issues in counseling and psychotherapy

General Course Information

Clients often bring up spiritual beliefs and dilemmas in counseling Counselors who have not been prepared to address these issues often simply ignore or distract the client from these topics due to their own sense of an inability to appropriately address the issues Counselors who have been prepared for these issues are more likely to address them in an effective and respectful manner with clients This course provides opportunities for personal and professional development for those who seek to deepen their knowledge and experience of their own spiritual beliefs and values and of how to integrate spirituality and religion into counseling practice

Student Learning Outcomes

Students will become skilled in the fourteen competencies outlined by the Association for Religious Ethical and Spiritual Values in Counseling (ASERVIC 2009)

1 The professional counselor can describe the similarities and differences between

spirituality and religion including the basic beliefs of various spiritual systems major world religions agnosticism and atheism

2 The professional counselor recognizes that the clientrsquos beliefs (or absence of beliefs) about spirituality andor religion are central to his or her worldview and can influence psychosocial functioning

3 The professional counselor actively explores his or her own attitudes beliefs and values about spirituality andor religion

4 The professional counselor continuously evaluations the influence of his or her own spiritual andor religious beliefs and values on the client and the counseling process

2 Online Discussions as indicated on the course calendar you will complete a minimum of three weekly discussion posts on eCollege connected to the readings

3 Spiritual Genogram and Autobiography Construct your own spiritual genogram

and write a spiritual autobiography (please see Horton-Parker amp Fawcett pp 46 -48 and Frame pp 104-108 These documents are posted to eCollege under Doc Sharing) Conduct a personal spiritual life review and draw on in-class readings and online discussions to identify the significant events (ie people places historicallife events mystical experiences and moments of transformation) that have contributed to your current spiritualreligious perspective Discuss how your current perspective may facilitate and hinder your work as a counselor as well as areas of growth for you This paper should be approximately 8-9 pages in length (for COUN 597 students) or 10-12 pages in length (for COUN 697 students) and should follow full APA 6 formatting including use of in-text headings citations and reference page Papers should be typed using single-sided pages double-spaced and include a title page references and appendix for the genogram (you can use any computer program to complete the genogram including Genopro Paint Draw etc but you must copy and paste the full genogram into your appendix of the paper for me to see) You MUST organize your paper by using in-text headings throughout it- I recommend turning the rubric sections into headings The Grading rubric is below

4 Final Interfaith Interview Service and Paper Conduct an interfaith interview

with a clergyperson or spiritualreligious leader from a faith tradition (or non-faith tradition as the case may be) totally different from your own or any you are familiar with attend at least one of their services and write a paper based upon the information gleaned from the interview as well as your observations of and reflections upon the service Please use the Sample Interfaith Interview Questionnaire at the end of the syllabus to conduct the interview You should also incorporate the questions found in Frame (2003 pp87-88 posted on eCollege under Doc Sharing tab) for visiting a place of worship and interviewing a religious leader The intervieweefaith tradition must be approved by the instructor prior to the interview and you will need to seek out the different faith tradition and ldquocold callrdquo email etc the interviewee on your own to seek their permission too so begin looking ASAP Being the holidays you may get to experience some unique services of other faith traditions than at other times of the year In addition to the interfaith interview information your paper should include a literature review section in which you will discuss additional research (at least 6 articles not included in any of the readings for the course) from current scholarly journals regarding topics pertinent to counseling individuals from the faith tradition of your interviewee The paper should be approximately 8-9 pages COUN 597 or 10-12 pages (COUN 697) and follow full APA 6 formatting too You MUST organize your paper by using headings throughout it- I recommend turning the rubric sections into headings Grading rubric is below

2 Online Discussions as indicated on the course calendar you will complete a minimum of three weekly discussion posts on eCollege connected to the readings

3 Spiritual Genogram and Autobiography Construct your own spiritual genogram

and write a spiritual autobiography (please see Horton-Parker amp Fawcett pp 46 -48 and Frame pp 104-108 These documents are posted to eCollege under Doc Sharing) Conduct a personal spiritual life review and draw on in-class readings and online discussions to identify the significant events (ie people places historicallife events mystical experiences and moments of transformation) that have contributed to your current spiritualreligious perspective Discuss how your current perspective may facilitate and hinder your work as a counselor as well as areas of growth for you This paper should be approximately 8-9 pages in length (for COUN 597 students) or 10-12 pages in length (for COUN 697 students) and should follow full APA 6 formatting including use of in-text headings citations and reference page Papers should be typed using single-sided pages double-spaced and include a title page references and appendix for the genogram (you can use any computer program to complete the genogram including Genopro Paint Draw etc but you must copy and paste the full genogram into your appendix of the paper for me to see) You MUST organize your paper by using in-text headings throughout it- I recommend turning the rubric sections into headings The Grading rubric is below

4 Final Interfaith Interview Service and Paper Conduct an interfaith interview

with a clergyperson or spiritualreligious leader from a faith tradition (or non-faith tradition as the case may be) totally different from your own or any you are familiar with attend at least one of their services and write a paper based upon the information gleaned from the interview as well as your observations of and reflections upon the service Please use the Sample Interfaith Interview Questionnaire at the end of the syllabus to conduct the interview You should also incorporate the questions found in Frame (2003 pp87-88 posted on eCollege under Doc Sharing tab) for visiting a place of worship and interviewing a religious leader The intervieweefaith tradition must be approved by the instructor prior to the interview and you will need to seek out the different faith tradition and ldquocold callrdquo email etc the interviewee on your own to seek their permission too so begin looking ASAP Being the holidays you may get to experience some unique services of other faith traditions than at other times of the year In addition to the interfaith interview information your paper should include a literature review section in which you will discuss additional research (at least 6 articles not included in any of the readings for the course) from current scholarly journals regarding topics pertinent to counseling individuals from the faith tradition of your interviewee The paper should be approximately 8-9 pages COUN 597 or 10-12 pages (COUN 697) and follow full APA 6 formatting too You MUST organize your paper by using headings throughout it- I recommend turning the rubric sections into headings Grading rubric is below

3 Spiritual Genogram and Autobiography Construct your own spiritual genogram

and write a spiritual autobiography (please see Horton-Parker amp Fawcett pp 46 -48 and Frame pp 104-108 These documents are posted to eCollege under Doc Sharing) Conduct a personal spiritual life review and draw on in-class readings and online discussions to identify the significant events (ie people places historicallife events mystical experiences and moments of transformation) that have contributed to your current spiritualreligious perspective Discuss how your current perspective may facilitate and hinder your work as a counselor as well as areas of growth for you This paper should be approximately 8-9 pages in length (for COUN 597 students) or 10-12 pages in length (for COUN 697 students) and should follow full APA 6 formatting including use of in-text headings citations and reference page Papers should be typed using single-sided pages double-spaced and include a title page references and appendix for the genogram (you can use any computer program to complete the genogram including Genopro Paint Draw etc but you must copy and paste the full genogram into your appendix of the paper for me to see) You MUST organize your paper by using in-text headings throughout it- I recommend turning the rubric sections into headings The Grading rubric is below

4 Final Interfaith Interview Service and Paper Conduct an interfaith interview

with a clergyperson or spiritualreligious leader from a faith tradition (or non-faith tradition as the case may be) totally different from your own or any you are familiar with attend at least one of their services and write a paper based upon the information gleaned from the interview as well as your observations of and reflections upon the service Please use the Sample Interfaith Interview Questionnaire at the end of the syllabus to conduct the interview You should also incorporate the questions found in Frame (2003 pp87-88 posted on eCollege under Doc Sharing tab) for visiting a place of worship and interviewing a religious leader The intervieweefaith tradition must be approved by the instructor prior to the interview and you will need to seek out the different faith tradition and ldquocold callrdquo email etc the interviewee on your own to seek their permission too so begin looking ASAP Being the holidays you may get to experience some unique services of other faith traditions than at other times of the year In addition to the interfaith interview information your paper should include a literature review section in which you will discuss additional research (at least 6 articles not included in any of the readings for the course) from current scholarly journals regarding topics pertinent to counseling individuals from the faith tradition of your interviewee The paper should be approximately 8-9 pages COUN 597 or 10-12 pages (COUN 697) and follow full APA 6 formatting too You MUST organize your paper by using headings throughout it- I recommend turning the rubric sections into headings Grading rubric is below
