Quito, 19 of Septiembre 2015 20:50 COTOPAXI VOLCANO PRESS RELEASE 72 The Geophysics Institute of the Polytechnic University informed that during the last 12 hours the Cotopaxi volcano maintained a moderate level of internal activity and low level of external. During the morning an emission of vapor with low ash content was observed. This emission reached 1200 meters above the crater and headed westward. In the afternoon, an emission with the same characteristics was observed. Rain falls were registered in the sectors nearby the volcano, but there was no evidence of mud fluids. Starting today the radio communication system between the people living in zones nearby the volcano, the ECU 911, and the Geophysics Institute of the Polytechnic University is functioning and will serve as an alert mechanism in case of an emergency. Actions Carried Out Government authorities talked about the current situation of the Cotopaxi, in EcuadorTV starting from 7 p.m. the Minister of Security Coordination, César Navas, participated in the show 593 Ecuador to explain about the current situation. Throughout the day other actions were carried out in order to strengthening the communication between citizens and the public institutions in relation to the current situation. Examples of these actions were the installation of systems that will allow residents of the neighborhoods of Selva Alegre, El Vallecito, San Fernando, and Tanipamba of Rumiñahui to have up-to-date information about the volcanic activity. These systems are connected to the Integrated Security Service ECU 911 and benefit 1000 people who do not have access to cellular phones. In addition, a preventive talk and a revision of the evacuation routes of the neighborhood of La Florida de Sangolquí were carried out. Recommendations We remind you to keep up with new information about the current situation of the Cotopaxi volcano. We also advise that the communication systems, mentioned above, should be used in a responsible manner to avoid inconveniences and unnecessary evacuation of families.
