COTOPAXI VOLCANO PRESS RELEASE 017

The report submitted by the Geophysics Institute of the Polytechnic University indicated, that since last night, the volcano Cotopaxi presents continuous ash emissions heading towards the Southwest side of the crater. Ash fall is reported in the areas of Mulaló, Lasso, Joseguango, Toacazo and Pastocalle in the Province of Cotopaxi. This past Saturday, in the district of Rumiñahui—in the parish of Selva Alegra, the Secretary of Risk Management in coordination with the National Army, the Red Cross and the National and Metropolitan Police executed a practice drill providing logistical support for the transfer of elderly people and other vulnerable groups. Experts from the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries trained a team of the National Military in the management of pasture protection for the production of silos—which will serve as food for the livestock living in affected areas where ash falls have occurred. As a preventive measure in the event of an eventual eruption, the Ministry of Culture and Heritage has developed a guide setting out preventive measures to safeguard cultural heritage located in museums. We remind the public that through the website www.volcancotopaxi.com they can access information on evacuation routes, shelters and safe zones.
