Between sea & mountain
A spirit of contrast: this is what characterizes the territory of the Alpes-Maritimes. From peaks higher than
3,000m to the plains of the Pre-Alps, cross country and alpine skiing enthusiasts can cover more than 700km
of pistes in sunny landscapes offering an incomparable range of scenery: alpine meadows and forests, the
majesty of the high peaks and picturesque perched villages, setting the Alpes-Maritimes region apart from the
others.
The Alpes-Maritimes brings together 3 international resorts (Valberg, Auron and Isola 2000) and 12 smaller
family resorts spread throughout the entire Massif. Their "snow" and "sun" assets are guaranteed only 1½
hours from the coast by road! The last resorts in the southern Alps before reaching the Sea!
Those who love the mountains choose the Mercantour and Cheiron Massifs in winter, with the promise of snow
to be enjoyed in all its forms: mountaineering, downhill and cross-country skiing, as well, of course, as new fun
sports like snowboarding, mogul and ski cross, for which the resorts of Auron, Isola 2000, Valberg and La
Colmiane have opened perfectly designed dedicated areas.
And the après-ski? There is plenty of choice…
Enjoy several extreme sports including frozen waterfall climbing, dog sledding, building igloos in the
Mercantour park or the more simple pleasures of walking in snowshoes, driving on ice, taking a ride in a sleigh
or even several fitness sessions.
But also discover the local crafts, regional specialities and villages full of history packed with hidden treasures
(painted chapels, museums, etc.).
Or why not enjoy the "sea-mountain" contrast and at the end of the afternoon sit on a terrace on the Croisette
or the Promenade des Anglais, followed by an exceptional evening such as those offered by the Cannes
Shopping Festival, the Nice Carnival or the Citrus Festival in Menton!
Let us also remember that the Mercantour National Park is at the heart of the region and represents a major
asset in the protection of its natural and cultural heritage.

To be discovered in the areas surrounding the
ski resorts…
Mercantour National Park
Founded in 1979, the Mercantour is one of nine national parks in France, with a protected zone of 68,500 ha
and a peripheral area of 146,500 ha.
The Mercantour National Park is twinned with the Parco Naturale Alpi Marittime in Italy; these two parks
received from the Council of Europe, in 1993, the European Diploma of Protected Areas and both signed the
European Charter for Sustainable Tourism.
The Mercantour National Park is a protected territory open to everyone. Visitors discover a natural and cultural
heritage of great diversity. In a few kilometres, they will undertake a virtual journey from the Mediterranean to
the Arctic via the alpine ambiences of the peaks of Mont Bego or L'Authion, to the sunny olive groves of the
Bévéra valley. The Mercantour landscapes result from centuries of human presence.
In the Chalcolithic, probably fascinated by the majesty of the site, people left traces of their passage carved in
the rock.
Thus, Vallée des Merveilles offers 30,000 petroglyphs on a surface area of 30 km²; it is a listed „Historic
Monument‟.
The Mercantour‟s flora is unique in Europe with over 2,400 species, 220 of which are rare: saxifrage (Saxifraga
florulenta), houseleek (Sempervivum), moss campion (Silene acaulis) and gentian, which offer a wide range of
colours in spring.
The fauna is also very rich. From chamois, that accomplished mountaineer, to ibex, saved from extinction by
reintroduction, there are wolves, returned from Italy, and small mammals, like marmots, ermine, varying hare...
The very wide variety of birds (golden eagle, short-toed eagle, black grouse...) has been further enriched since
1992 with reintroduction of the lammergeyer, or „bone-breaking‟ bearded vulture, with its 2.80 m wingspan.
Information points provide publications, exhibitions, screenings and guided tours.

New in 2009/2010 : Le Miradou Llamas - Col de Turini
www.leslamasdumiradou.com
@Le logis de la source
Llama farm – Visit - Outing – Organic meal package
Located for several years at the Col de Turini (approx 1hr 15 min from Nice), the farm has some ten llamas on
2 hectares around a site named Le Miradou over 1,500m above sea level at the gates to the Mercantour Park.
The local flora and fauna display remarkable diversity and, for centuries, humans have contributed to their
enrichment and maintenance.
In recent years, nearly 2 hectares have been almost entirely dedicated to raising llamas.
Bison – The Monts d‟Azur Biological Reserve – Andon
www.haut-thorenc.com
"Wild and free – In search of lost species"
Bison on the Cote d‟Azur!
This is a "Lodge" concept which has just opened in the largest private reserve in Europe several kilometres
from Grasse.
At Thorenc, a former holiday camp at the heart of 800 hectares has been modified for a scientific species
conservation project and preservation of the natural areas of the Grasse high country at an altitude of 1,500m.
Besides the preservation of sites where roe-deer, wild boar, foxes, chamois and around a hundred other
species are already living, Patrice Longour in partnership with Poland in a European breeding program, decided
to introduce a herd of around fifteen European bison and Przwalski horses.
In addition to this scientific project, he decided to increase the value of his project by offering a complete
accommodation concept on his estate: rooms and restaurant at the farm, guided walks on foot or by sleigh
pulled by superb draught horses, allowing an educational approach for this passionate individual‟s project.
The luckiest may see the bison up close or further away.
The estate is open all year round.
The Alpha Scénoparc® - the Time of the Wolf - Saint-Martin-Vésubie
www.alpha-loup.com
The Alpha Scénoparc® was created on the initiative of Gaston Franco, the Mayor of Saint-Martin-Vésubie in
order to recount all aspects of recent and past confrontations between Man and the wolf. Because Alpha – the
international name for the dominant couple in a pack of wolves - is not just another reserve for wolves in
captivity. This is an animal park established in a grandiose setting and which, through the originality of its
scenery is unique in the world.
15
Firstly, the visitor witnesses three Scénovisions®, of around 20 minutes each, for which the beautiful scenes
are located in the former and now completely renovated cowsheds. These shows present several characters,
shepherds, scientists, forest warden, whose activities lead them into contact with the wolves, each for very
different reasons. Guided by one of these characters, the animal behaviour specialist, visitors then go to meet
the wolves in the second part of the park, but not without firstly passing through an enclosed "induction" room.

Roure - Marcel Kroenlein arboretum … an extraordinary mountain garden www.arboretum-
roure.org
@ Arboretum de Roure – Œuvre de Michèle Kleijnen
Roure, a mediaeval village perched 1,100m above sea level in the Tinée Valley features an arboretum showing
the mountain stage (altitude between 1,000 and 1,700m) with deciduous trees and conifers growing on
mountains all over the world, as well as collections of maple, traditional fruit trees, wild roses, houseleek, and
the “Chalet de l'Arbre” with its “Carpotheque” (collection of the fruit of conifers), xylotheque (collection of wood
for cabinetmakers). It is also unique for its little waterfalls (“cascatelles”) with birds and ornithology trail.
“Art and Trees”: the only arboretum in Europe displaying art, it offers visitors works by many artists who have
found their inspiration in this timeless place.
“No-made”* groups artists who have left their galleries to create works on a different theme each year in the
largest outdoor exhibition area: the Arboretum of Roure. Their paths of creation connect the sea and
mountains, from the customs trails of Villa Roc Fleuri Cap d‟Ail (installation in September) to the mule trails of
the Arboretum of Roure (the first Sunday in October).
The site has become the base camp for “No-made”, where artists entrust their works to Nature so that, over
the seasons, the snow, hail, rain, wind and sun reworks them in its own way.
Every year, prestigious “ambassadors” precede the “No-made” event: Ben, Jean-Michel Folon, Ernest Pignon
Ernest, Valerio Adami, Ousmane Sow, Nicolas Lavarenne…
*a reference to Marcel Duchamp and his “readymades”, pronounced “nomad” in French
The garden is a listed National Heritage site: Remarkable Garden Label.

this same Cote d‟Azur can be appreciated for its snow and "extra" ordinary activities…
This is a new way of discovering the riches of this land and more particularly the outlying areas of the
Mercantour National Park.
