The sculpture of Gollum diving into the stream

to catch sw

eet juicy fishes is 13 metres long. The installation was

put in place ahead of the world prem

iere of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, as part of W

ellington’s initiative to transform

itself into the Middle of M

iddle-earth. In December

of 2013, two Great Eagles soared above the term

inal, one of w

hich carries Gandalf the Grey. Weta W

orkshop moulded

and cast 1000 feathers for the eagle installations, which

have wingspans of 15 m

etres. November of 2014 m

arked the installation of the third Hobbit-them

ed installation:

Smaug the M

agnificent, a huge dragon nestled in rocks in the airport’s check-in area. Sm

aug features animatronic parts

with a blinking yellow

eye that watches travellers as they go by. The sculpture, w

hich is 75% of the full sized dragon,

was revealed to a crowd of Hobbit fans in New Zealand as

winners of the Hobbit Fan Fellow

ship contest. Sir Richard Taylor has described Sm

aug as “the ultimate creation of

Weta’s im

agination”. The installation was unveiled ahead of the prem

iere of the final film in the Hobbit Trilogy, The Battle

of the Five Armies.

At three and a half metres (11 ft

6 in) tall, Azog’s a gigantic foe. You’ll probably be eye-to-eye w

ith his loin cloth – with all the

faces of his victims staring back at

you. Turning and running seems

a logical option. Or you could just snap a selfie w

ith him, then share

it with your friends! #azog
