PLANNING FOR COSTUME

Page 2: Costume planning

SKINNY JEANS:

Skinny jeans conform to the indie stereotype and are the main staple behind the genre. The jeans are used to directly distinguish between stereotypes (i.e. will appeal directly to the indie genre). They are monochromatic which is also conforming.

T-SHIRT:

The T-shirt is dark purple which is somewhat conforming to the genre. The slightly feminine colour is conforming, as well as the tighter-fitting design, but the monochromatic OR bright colour theme is not conformed to. However, the colour represents the atmosphere of the video, therefore is most apt.

HAT:

The hat was selected because it added an individual ‘flair’ to the costume, which conforms to the indie stereotype. It also has the added bonus of representing the home-town of the video-shoot; it represents an intertextual link to Norwich (Norwich being stereotypically agricultural).

BELT:

The belt, like the hat, adds an individual ‘flair’ to the costume –helping to ‘break-up’ the darker colours from the t-shirt and the Jeans. The colour is monochromatic and conforms to the indie genre.

BOOTS:

These specific boots sit on the borderline between masculinity and feminism: the fact that they are boots helps to reach out to male audiences, where the design and colour of the boots will appeal to the more feminine audiences. The way in which the boots are worn can also help to generate a certain type of look: if the boots are tied up tight, they may appear more feminine and ‘tidy’, whereas loosely tied boots indicate a more slob-like, relaxed look, which is more masculine. In the video, the boots are to be on the border: tied up slightly, but loose enough to appear relaxed.

EXTRAS

Within the video, other

garments of clothing have

been considered. In

keeping with the Indie

theme, and conforming to

the Indie stereotype, a

formal/informal approach

is met by the formal jacket

(which would clash with

the informal skinny-jeans

and other clothing

garments).
