“In the midst of winter,I found there was, within me, an invincible summer.

And that makes me happy. For it says that no matterhow hard the world pushes against me, within me,there’s something stronger– something better, pushing right back.”

-Albert Camus

What is unique about the Islita Museum? It is the first open-air art collection in the region. Butmore remarkably, each work of art is the result of theinvited artist’s intervention in the town of Islita. Thecreative process is enriched by the artist’s communionwith the surrounding nature and community. Thecollection also features pieces by local artists whosetalent has been fostered through the museum.

Whichpiece ismost remarkable to you?Andwhy? The “Lolly” intervention of Costa Rican artist FlorenciaUrbina. After spending time in the community shedevised a set of symbols of such strength andresonance that they have become trademarks of ourMuseum. These are the star (health), moon (culture),and spiral (eternal return). Part of the interventionconsists of the “Popi Signos” or “Lolly Signs” that areset up along the roads in and around Islita, attractingtraveler’s attention prior to their arrival. Once guestsvisit the museum, they have an “aha” moment, whenthey connect the Lolly signs to our project.

Which exhibition has been most special to you?My first exhibition “Creativity and Nature: Art of thePapaturras” showcased work by the Papaturras, thefirst local artist group consolidated within the IslitaMuseum project. Beyond this symbolic coincidence, what was special for me was the sense of artisticempowerment that the artist’s felt in preparing andcompleting their work for this exhibition. When I beganto work with the group I encouraged each member topursue her own interest, emphasizing that eachshould feel free to follow her own intuition and creativedrive. At first they were intimidated, not knowingexactly how to proceed. But quickly they took on thechallenge and the result was a varied exhibition unitedby the group’s shared visual language of stringingtogether bits of the local environment, like shells, stones, wood, and seeds. I was and am delighted tosee that the Papaturras are motivated by thisexpressive freedom.
