Presentations The day begins with three special presentations relating to the technical tour destinations. Scottish Parliament Scotland's Parliament sits right next to the conference venue. Constructed from a mixture of steel, oak, and granite, the complex and controversial building draws inspiration from the surrounding landscape, famous Scottish paintings, and upturned boats on the seashore. The highlight is the unique roof structure in the main debating chamber which consists of laminated oak beams that are supported at ceiling level and connected by a system of stainless-steel joints without supporting columns. The building was designed by Catalan architect Enric Miralles and consulting engineers Arup. This special tour will cover the use of wood in the building as well as the functioning of the Scottish Parliament, which is hugely influential for the forest and timber industries in Scotland; an important sector of the Scottish economy. John Hope Gateway Opened in October 2009, this stunning building offers visitors to Edinburgh’s Royal Botanic Garden the opportunity to explore the scientific work that takes place at the Garden, as well as housing a restaurant and shop. It was designed by Edward Cullinan Architects and engineers Buro Happold. The building is a world away from the rustic shed and tree-house aesthetic that many people associate with gardens. Instead it is an exemplar of state-of-the-art timber engineering with glulam, cross-laminated timber and hybrid steel and timber structural elements. The building is finished externally with home-grown larch cladding and internally with fittings and furniture of various species. Glenkinchie Distillery One of only three remaining lowland whisky distilleries, Glenkinchie is locally known as the ‘Edinburgh Malt’ due to its close proximity to Scotland’s capital. There will be a special tour for the conference covering the role of the wooden casks in whisky making – the subject of some current research in collaboration with Edinburgh Napier University. The tour is generously sponsored by the distillery’s owner Diageo, and will conclude with a whisky tasting.
