Cosplay masquerade – Craftsmanship contest.

Please read all rules and notes before signing up. Some things have changed

1. Eligibility:

Costumes must be of original construction, or show significant modification of pre-existing materials.

No costumes are allowed that are purchased or otherwise obtained from a commercial and/or

professional source. This is a show of creativity and craftsmanship, NOT shopping ability.

It is expected that some costumes may include as minor elements some purchased items (gloves, under-

suits, footwear, wigs, etc..). Minor being, not the main focus of the costume.

If your entry utilizes many of these, check with the Masquerade Director for approval. As a general rule,

at least 75% of what you bring onto the stage must not have been purchased.

If it could pass for street clothes, it’s not a costume.

All costumes will be inspected and pre-judged by the Director before the contest to ensure it is

eligible and a base score.

Pre-judging must have proof of work, either by printed, digital or personal page photos.

A costume that has previously won “Best In Show” or “Master Class” at conventions contest or

masquerade, etc.. is not eligible for an award from the judges.

Contestants must rank up. If you have won in a class, you cannot compete in that class again. If

you have won Master class, you may present for honorable mentions, but will not be scored. To

allow others a fair chance to compete.

Contestant may wear a commissioned costume as a model. The creator of the commissioned

work must present at the pre-judging, contest and is named on the entry form. You are a model,

not contestant.

To be eligible for an award and compete in the contest on Saturday October 14th, all costumes

must be made by the show participants (name on entry form). Purchased, or rented costumes

are welcome to be shown on stage out-of-competition, on Sunday October 15th but will not be

eligible for awards or prizes.

You must be 16 years of age or older (with parents consent) to compete for prizing for the

ranked contest.

No flagrant nudity. “No Costume is No Costume”. This is a family event. Please dress respectable

as many young children will be present.

No live animals will be allowed on stage, with the exception of helper animals (eye-dogs) if

required by the contestant.

All contestants must be able to walk on and off stage without help. (This does not including

medical or health conditions). This does means stairs. For safety reasons of all of our guests and

volunteers, will not be lifting props or overly large costumes on/off stage. Costumes are under

the wearers own power.

2. Entry and pre-judging

All entries must be submitted before 11 am Saturday October 14th to allow judges’ time

to sort and prep for prejudging at 12pm. and to allow photography and pre-judging of

their costumes.

Each class will go through pre-judging from Novice to Master. Time will be short to not

keep everyone waiting and give some time to enjoy the con before the 2pm start time.

You must be on time and present at pre-judging and on stage call or will be disqualified.

You must also be present for the awards presentation at the end.

Entries must have some submitted photos in any format which the judge can see work

performed to create your costume. Printed, digital usb or facebook can be used.

Pre-judging will be fast! You will be quickly looked over for quality, detail and

craftsmanship, with some questions. As the judges and audience will not be able to see

your work close up.

Costume definitions:

o Re-Creation: A costume copied from a pre-existing design, such as from a movie,

comic book, famous artwork, history, etc. which will be scored on Accuracy.

o Original: A design original to the maker/wearer. It may be inspired by some work

of fantasy, science fiction, mythology, etc., but is not a copy. Will be scored on

Creativity.

The Director may reject an entry on the basis of inappropriate or unsafe behavior or

content, or because of too many purchased items, or because the construction

materials or techniques used do not meet the criteria to quality for the show, or

because the event has reached its limit for entries.

The Cosplay Director’s word is final. There will be a complete non-bias judgement of all

contestant costumes. It is about the costume not the cosplayer and that is all.

3. Stage time

present on time or you are not ready to go on stage when it is your turn, you will be disqualified.

Any exceptions are at the Directors discretion only.

more you do, the better your score.

Rules quick and short:

The decision of the Director is final.

The judges only judge from stage side and do not hold any power other than scoring your on

stage appearance and performance.

There is NO conversation with judges during the contest time.

Any concerns over possible unfair judging will be taken up with only the Director in a calm

manner.

Decisions are final. Categories, award type and mentions are at the judges’ and masquerade

direction’s discretion only.

The masquerade director reserves the right to exclude any costume from the show that he/she

deems inappropriate or for any reason the masquerade director determines to be sufficient.

No nudity, this is kid and family friendly

No firearms, firing replicas (BB, pellet, airsoft, etc..), working projectiles, etc…

No flaming, flashing, freezing, squirting or bursting (C02) props or costumes

No metal blades. Weapons must be “con-safe” please ask staff for the Director if unsure.

Commissioned costumes will be allowed IF and ONLY IF the costumer (the one who made the

costume) filled out the application form him/herself. He or she doesn’t have to appear on stage,

but his or her presence in the waiting room is mandatory. Wigs, little props and jewels which are

not the main focus of the costume are exempt.

The Director and the judges have the right to disqualify anyone who doesn’t follow the rules.

Please note that these rules have been referenced from multiple Comic-con world-wide competitions

and have been modified for our local convention. These have been established for a fair and unbiased

competition for cosplay craftsman as a skills competition.

Prizing will be determined when we get a full number of contestants in their respective divisions.

As usual we will be having the Best in Show award with the $1000 prize for who we think did the best

overall. This can be from any division.
