First, I would like to congratulate Mrs. Lori Leibowitz, our ALP teacher, for her outstanding presentation at last week’s board of education meeting. Lori presented about personalized learning goals and the new TEPL indicators, as she has been piloting and incorporating personalized learning goals into her teaching practice. Personalized Learning is a teacher facilitated process that provides for student-directed learning. This has enabled her students to create personalized learning goals and show their progression towards these goals. This student ownership is key in ensuring that students are motivated and successful. Lori has purposefully shared her new learning with all Cos Cob Staff as part of our professional development. Thank you Lori for your outstanding presentation and your sharing. On January 25 th Assistant Principal, Barbara Oxer and special education teachers, Ann Gieparda and Melissa Rogers will present and participate in a panel discussion focusing on keys to successful communication with your special education team with a focus on progress and adjustments to the IEP plan. This discussion will be very beneficial to those parents who have students in special education, as it will assist them in understanding their child’s personalized Individualized Educational Plan. Mrs. Oxer, Mrs. Gieparda, and Ms. Rogers are knowledgeable and eager to assist parents in understanding this important piece of their child’s education. On Monday, Makerspace guru Mr. Bill Derry visited the Cos Cob School Learning Commons to see it in action. He was delighted to witness Ms. Dahle's kindergartners program Beebots to move across a mat and also observed Mrs. DiGiovanna's first graders create marble mazes with Legos and base plates. Mr. Derry was especially thrilled when Ms. Marchetti's fourth graders worked together organically to solve puzzles and clues that would open four locks on a Breakout Box. Parents will have an opportunity to experience this first hand at our Steam Night on March 15 th . He said, he was very impressed with the Innovation Space and Learning Commons "but more impressive was what was happening IN IT! You really have an interactive learning environment to be proud of and I love that it is in constant BETA!!!! It HAS TO BE." Visitors are always welcome to come to the Innovation Space and see our students think critically, create, collaborate, communicate, and most importantly, learn! Have a nice weekend and remember to take some time to talk to your children about one of our nation’s most treasured leaders, Martin Luther King, who will be remembered not only for his commitment to the cause of equality for African Americans but also for his profound speeches that moved so many. Life's most persistent and urgent question is, What are you doing for others? Martin Luther King, Jr. Gene
