Welcome Back!

I hope everyone enjoyed a warm, healthy and fun summer.

Our dedicated volunteers and staff have been working hardover the past many weeks to make sure everything is ready forour busy fall lineup of activities and sports. You will hopefullyby now have seen a press release and email announcementsabout the change in our Community Center's name. There areactually 2 changes that your board has worked on over thepast 12 months and have recently moved to implement.

The first is to change our working name from Central CorydonCC to Corydon CC.

The second change is of course much more significant as wehave created a new name for all of our sports, and we will nowbe called Corydon Comets.

The amalgamation of our three communities is a new chapterfor each, a new beginning. Based on the input the Boardreceived from the community as a whole, and from feedbackfrom other Community Centers that have gone through anamalgamation process, it was decided we wanted to createsomething that every single one of us can call our own. Anopportunity to begin building new traditions and a newlegacy presented itself.

Having a single name and logo not only allows us to build ournew brand across all sports and across the entire city ofWinnipeg, it is also in the long-term a much more efficientapproach. This will allow us to have a very clear identity to allchildren participating in activities at Corydon CC. It wasagreed that the most important word in Corydon CommunityCenter is the word "Community". Having one common namewill help us strengthen this sense of community.

We do understand how deeply many people care for theteams you played on as a kid, and we understand that this willmean you may greet this change with some resistance. In thefuture, our jerseys will not be the ones you proudly worewhen you played. We want the kids who play here now tohave as deep and abiding connection to our newlyamalgamated community center as you did to the center yougrew up with. We want them to be unified, regardless of whatsport or activity they participate in. This is one of the reasonswe are doing this.

The volunteer board that has been involved with this decisionmaking process have lived in the area for decades and alsohave had to wrestle with this dilemma. How to create this newsense of community for the generations to come while wepreserve the heritage of what we knew growing up?

We have made a couple of decisions that we feel will help tohonor our heritage. Firstly, a new Heritage Crest is being

created that will have the logos from each of the three centersincorporated into it. This crest will be a shoulder patch for allof our new uniforms. I have attached a version of this crestthat we are working on for you to see. In this way we willpreserve some of the history that is so important to all of us.

Additionally, we have also made a decision to rename theGrosvenor Avenue Ice Hockey Federation that currently hasaround 300 kids participating. The new name will be CorydonHeritage Ice Federation. The uniforms and team names withinthis Ice Federation will proudly display the Grizzlies, Cardinals,Explorers and the Sabres logos (Sabres was the Crescentwoodbrand prior to the Grizzlies).

We will also work with other sports like soccer, and where wehave our own house league teams, we will continue to use ourHeritage names for purposes of naming teams.

We are sure as you begin to see our new uniforms and coloursget rolled out you will be excited as we are to begin thisprocess of creating our new identity, while still working tohonour our heritage.

The Corydon CC Board and staff are dedicated to ensuring ourcommunity centre is the best it can be for all members of thecommunity and all activities that the community centrepromotes.

Our volunteers and their families selflessly offer their time andefforts, and we are grateful to their commitment. Communityengagement and feedback is of upmost importance, and Ihope that we can count on your support as we continue tomove through this process

Sincerely,

Pat O’ConnorPresident

The Corydon Community Centre is onceagain proud to partner with More thanShoes by carrying out a SHOE DRIVEduring our Fall Registration!

More Than Shoes is a Manitobagrassroots movement that outfitschildren in need with NEW proper fittingrunning shoes and winter boots.

Why shoes and boots? Shoes are so much more than coversfor feet! With new well-sized shoes children could take partin school and extra-curricular activities and would no longerstand out from their peers because of what they lack.Attention is now concentrated on what they have to offer,to the game, project or activity. These children can come toschool and focus on their studies instead of on theircircumstances. Children want to be "cool" but it is hard to

be cool when your feet are cold!

With shoes that fit, children fit, too - intotheir schools, social networks and livesfilled with hope and dreams. After all,new shoes provide dignity, hope, prideand heightened self-esteem. That's a lotof good things in a rather small box, don't you think?

So how can you be part of this? Drop off a NEW pair ofrunning shoes or winter boots at any of our three sites(River Heights, Sir John Franklin and Crescentwood) duringour Fall Registration from September 4th-14th.

Corydon Community Centre hopes to donate at least 100pairs of New running shoes and winter boots to help out asmany families as we can during the school year. Thanks foryour help!

Corydon CC runs an in-house league exclusively at River Heights Arena. The number of playersis restricted to manageable numbers (max of 12-13 players per team). Starting in lateSeptember - early October, an initiation program of 8 sessions will be held to assist the playerswith some basic skills. The season consists of 18 indoor games. Teams will practice once andsometimes twice a week, typically outdoors. We do encourage our teams to participateoutside the club in tournaments and exhibition games to prepare the players for travelinghockey and have the added experience of playing new teams. When we assign teams, our toppriority is equal skill level. We TRY to keep friends together, but there is NO guarantee this canbe done. We only adjust for balance, not because a player wants to be with their friends. It isalso HIGHLY recommended that young skaters enroll in a Learn to Skate program. This leagueis a league based on non-competitive environment and good sportsmanship.

Players trying for AAA, AA or High Schoolmust also register for Corydon CC hockey toprevent problems related to having a placeto play if the player does not make the AAA,AA or High School team. Your cheque will bereturned or destroyed, as per yourinstructions, in the event of the playermaking the team. New for 2012-13 this will be the first year of online registration forhockey in our area (APHA - Assiniboine Park Hockey Association)during the month of August and start of September. Registration willbe online directly with Hockey Canada's Database but payment willstill be made at the club sites. We still need you in person to sign upfor our volunteer duties, privacy documents, etc. (details to follow). The hockey program will again be utilizing the $100 volunteer bondper family.

This is also the second season since the amalgamation of the threecommunity centres of Crescentwood, River Heights & Sir JohnFranklin. The new name of our sports teams going forward will bethe Corydon Comets and we will be sporting the Winnipeg Jetscolours for our hockey uniforms. The next four years will see usbudget consciously replacing the old jerseys for the new logoedones.

There will still be some grandfathering allowed for kids 13+ fromCrescentwood who wish to continue playing with their friends in FortGarry, they must however register at Corydon CC and be transferredor register directly with the Fort Garry Twins AA organization.

As a reminder, for traveling hockey, it is our goal at Corydon CC andwithin the APHA to have uniformity with respect to tryouts, teampractices and ice schedules. The APHA has adopted the HockeyHandbook as a guide for ALL teams within the APHA to follow forplayers, coaches, managers and parents. The hockey handbook canbe viewed on the APHA website www.aphamb.ca. Remember this isa reference guide not gospel.

For team formations, every effort is made to ensure Corydon CC andall clubs in the APHA follow a fair and equitable process. Rememberyou must register to tryout. If you choose to play in another programafter the number of teams in each category has been formed, we willonly refund half your money. This reason is simple; once the numberof teams has been formed we are committed to those numbers soany drop in players is catastrophic.

The traveling program is "grass roots" hockey, where participation, fair play and competitiveness are always the goal. Corydon CC shares the belief of equal playing time, playing in a respectfulmanner and having fun. Parents should also be respectful of theenormous amount of time and energy our coaches/managersdedicate both on & off the ice to run a successful team. If you haven'tvolunteered in the past few years with a team please help out thisyear! Finally I would ask that everyone be mindful that the referees are young and developing and learning the game too. Without our current crop of returning referees we would not be able to play any games. I trust that you will give them the respect and consideration they deserve as if they were your own child! Let's play some hockey!

If your child does not want to try out for A1or A2 travelling hockey, declare the nexthighest level your child would like toparticipate at. Details regarding the try-outprocess will be available at the club

ATTENTION: RINGETTE FAMILIESAlthough the Corydon CC registration period

is September 4-14, please register your ringette player by September 8th.

What Is Ringette?Ringette is a fast-paced team sport played on ice with a ring, stickand full protective equipment. A game consists of two 20-minuteperiods, taking an hour to complete.

Try Ringette for free!A great way to see if Ringette is the sport for you is to attend a ComeTry Ringette event. Dates at www.cometryringette.com

What Makes Ringette Unique?Ringette encourages the rapid development of skating skills, anddemands that athletes apply concepts of teamwork and gamestrategy to succeed, in particular:

• Players must pass the ring over the blue line to a teammateevery time - promoting the involvement of all players.

• Skill, speed and strategy are what score goals - intentional andaggressive body contact is forbidden.

• Success depends on how well you and your teammates worktogether as only three players may attack or defend around thenet. Less crowding gives the skilled player space and reducesthe risk of injury.

• Only the goaltender is allowed in the crease. Featuring a biggercrease, scoring demands real skill.

• At the advanced levels, a team has 30 seconds from the timethey gain possession of the ring to take a shot on goal.

Who Plays Ringette?Originally invented to offer girls a team ice sport, Ringette hasdeveloped into a true Sport for Life, involving participants of all agesand both genders. In Manitoba, Ringette is played from the age of 5through to Senior Ladies and at all levels from House League to AAElite Players who compete for national championships. There are alsofive university teams in Manitoba. While the majority of Ringetteplayers are girls, boys are welcome up to age 12.

Team Formation Players at any age group may be based at anycommunity centre in our division, which is Assiniboine Park FortGarry Ringette Association (APFG).

U8 (formerly Bunnies) Every effort will be made to keep each playerwith the friend named at registration. Bunnies are tentativelyscheduled to begin practice the first part of October. Players willreceive notice of team assignment by their coaches.

U10, U12, U14 (formerly Novice, Petite, Tween) There are mandatoryassessments for all players in these age categories. Assessments willassist in determining athlete's development level and placingher/him on a team that offers the best opportunity for a positiveringette experience. These groups will have 4 assessment skates inlate September/early October. Once they are completed, players willbe placed on teams balanced on likeness of skill level. APFG hoststhese sessions, but all evaluations are done by an outside party.

U16, U19 (formerly Junior, Belles) Assessments in these categorieswill remain optional and players have the option of trying out for an"A" team.

In the 1990's research on strength training for older adults was explored. Expertsnow recommend that older adults do strength training to maintain their strength, muscle mass and balance. Inactive adults have increased risk of disability, falls anddiseases such as diabetes. Find out the benefits by joining this program that will helpmake you stronger using our exercise equipment and free weights. There are a fewreasons that prevent older adults from taking part in strength training so allparticipants are requested to meet with their family physician to evaluate theirreadiness for this activity.

The Kelvin Clippers have been fixtures at the River HeightsArena since 1996, and unless you are an early riser you arenot likely to catch one of their workouts. The team whosedressing room is built into the RH arena complex, doesmost of it's practicing before class at around 7:30 a.m. Thisregimen, although unpopular with teenagers, requiresdedication and commitment which is obvious by theintensity of their practices. The team plays in the "A"(Platinum) division of the Winnipeg High School HockeyLeague, and has consistently remained at that level ofcompetition. Full statistical information is available on thewebsite: http://www.whshl.com/

High School hockey in Manitoba is quickly becoming thepreferred choice for players and parents because of itsfocus on academics, the ability to play with school matesbefore local crowds, and preferred ice times. The WHSHLplays the majority of its games between 4 and 6 p.m. onweekdays, which leaves the weekends free for work andschool assignments.

The team appreciates all the support it receives from thestaff and the community at large. Kelvin Boys play theirhome games most Wednesdays at 4:15 and the Kelvin girlsplay most Mondays at 4:00. Come on down to the home of

the Clippers, support our local high school teams andwatch some fast-paced action.
