The Prez Sez . . .

September 2011

Summer is moving right along. The Hamilton Car Parade and the 1stCorvairs-on-the-River is now behind us. I counted 9 Corvairs on hand. Several members received trophies at the Hamilton Parade. It was hot again, and we did have a little rain, but everyone prevailed.

We had 5 Corvairs make the trek to Ripley for the Club picnic. There was plenty of good food on hand. Carla took a few adventurist people out for a boat ride on the mighty Ohio. The rain stayed away, making for a successful day. We did have a special guest visit us from the north. Look for him elsewhere in the newsletter.

It is time to start thinking about some fall or winter events; a trip somewhere perhaps? Updates on some of the Club member projects with pictures would be nice. I know several projects are underway. Wes has his ‘68 painted and it is in re-assembly; Anthony is making headway with Subaru engine conversion; rumor has it that Doug’s car is back in action, and we can always count on Spencer for a project or two, three, four, five . . . Others??? Gather your update materials; we can’t wait to hear from you.

Here is something neat. Anthony posted some pictures of the Corvairs-on-the-River event on Corvair Center’s Forum. Last time I checked, it had over 300 views. I even think the previous owner of Dave Schwettman’s Lakewood noticed his old ride. That’s Cool !!!

See you at the next meeting . . . Vairs Rule!!!

Just-A-Minute

August 6, 2011

A short meeting was held towards the end of “Corvairs on the River.”

The meeting was called to order by Joe VonDerHaar. In attendance were Don Filkins, Don Berding, Spencer & Wilma Duffey, Dave Schwettman and Joe VonDerHaar.

No treasurer’s report was given.

OLD BUSINESS:

Members had a good time at the Hamilton Car Parade held at the end of July. Don Filkins, Mike Demeter, Tom VonDerHaar, Jim Powell and Ralph Gubser took home trophies.

“Corvairs on the River” was a success with 5 Corvairs attending and a total of 8 members and their family members, making 15 in attendance. Other commitments kept a few others away. Next year will be a must do.

NEW BUSINESS:

Don Filkins mentioned we should have our roster updated and redistributed. Joe mentioned that Mike Demeter had updated emails and numbers earlier in the year. It probably has not been redistributed yet. We will get one out shortly.

We discussed the Denver Corsa meet for a short while and pondered what it would take to someday host one in the Cincinnati area. It was decided to table to a later date and gain more input from other Club members.

The meeting was closed by Joe VonDerHaar.

Corvair with a Modern Fuel Injected Boxer Motor Submitted by Anthony Johnson

Performing engine swaps with collectible cars is a delicate thing. The installation of modern small blocks in ‘55-’57 Chevys, early Camaros and yes, Corvairs, have given owners the immediate and reliable benefits of smooth power and reliability that come from direct fuel injection, computer controls and a wide selection of performance parts for daily use. The same has gone for Corvairs that use fuel injected swaps. Flat head Porsche engines are common swaps for VW Karmann Ghias and VW Bugs, but not Corvairs.

All of those swaps are great, but they aren't exactly original at this point. Plus, Porsche swaps are prohibitively expensive. The majority of the Corvair V8 swaps removed the backseat and changed the size of the cockpit by pushing the drive closer to the dash. The Corvair is a very special niche within the Bowtie world, and I wanted to blaze new trails. Over 50 years after its debut, the basic IRS platform remains as solid as ever.

Since modern technology lets us exploit the real potential of a Corvair, what other modern engine fits the bill for a rear-engine swap?

For me, the answer turned out to be the Subaru EJ20T turbo motor, a boxer design that’s specially imported from Japan. In both size and weight, it resembles the Corvairs vintage flat six design.

In power, it's a whole different story. The Subaru EJ20 turbo is a 2.0 Litre DOHC Turbo and intercooled engine that puts out about 260 horsepower (we swapped the turbo and should be well over 300Hp). I purchased this motor from Tiger Japanese along with a Mega Squirt Electronic Control Unit (ECU) and engine harness.

Page 11: CORVAIR CLUB OF CINCINNATI 2011 OFFICERS - … 2011.pdf · CORVAIR CLUB OF CINCINNATI 2011 OFFICERS Services and ... few adventurist people out for a boat ride on the ... muscle machines

My goal was to install it in my cherry red late-model 1967 Corvair Monza coupe with the stoutest transaxle able to handle over 300-horsepower, and with resulting upgrades drive and handle like a new car rather than a 60’s relic. Since late-model Corvairs are still cheap and plentiful, there was much budget room to absorb the cost of the very sophisticated EJ20T engine, Porsche 915 transaxle, and associated parts and labor.

There were a lot of reasons why I chose the Subie engine. First of all, there’s the Wow Factor: who can argue with a modern power plant in a great looking old body? The EJ20T Subie is light years more advanced than anything that can be done to an old Chevy flat six. Of course, a modern GM V-8 is great, but where’s the challenge there? I had to have one, and it had to contain the forged pistons used in Japan so we can hop it up to over 400Hp at a later date.

The EJ20T also has a solid track record. The VW Beetle/Karmann/Vanagon people have been doing this for a while with great results. Scott McIntosh, the mechanic and fabricator working with me, has had great luck swapping Subie motors into older rear-engine designs. Scott installed a Subaru 2.5 into a Westfalia Vanagon and created something reliable, tractable, torquey, efficient and able to get out of its own way.

It’s a bit esoteric, but the engine choice even has some General Motors DNA in its makeup. Earlier in the last decade, GM owned a share of Subaru. They also put this engine in the Saab 9-2x, a badge-engineered WRX STi. Not that this took anything but a back seat to performance, but it was interesting.

Finally, I wanted to bridge generations. Sixties hot-rodders built up their V-8 muscle machines with over-the-counter speed parts, but the small-car and import crowd had just handling, with very little in the way of speed. “Tuner” cars were at least a generation away. What if I matched the modern, state-of-the-art “tuner” motor with my pristine ’67? How would the Evo/WRX crowd react to my bridge-building project? The Corvair never got its due in either crowd. Now it can.

Page 12: CORVAIR CLUB OF CINCINNATI 2011 OFFICERS - … 2011.pdf · CORVAIR CLUB OF CINCINNATI 2011 OFFICERS Services and ... few adventurist people out for a boat ride on the ... muscle machines

Once I purchased the EJ20 turbo engine, 915 transaxle and Kennedy Engineering engine adapter, I installed a steering box from Flaming River Performance, quick steering arms from Rafee Corvair, all new berlin performance bushings, an engine and transaxle subframe and a tube roll cage and cockpit subframe. In addition to the transaxle, we went with Porsche 930 CV joints and high quality aircraft allow heat-treated steel Sway-A-Way 930 axles in the rear. The center part of the 930 axle is sized to twist like a torsion bar under heavy loads absorbing a large portion of the shock transmitted from the wheel to the gearbox to prevent damage to the 915.

In fact, the biggest problem we encountered was devising a way to use the rear Porsche transaxle with the Corvair’s independent rear suspension. There were no provisions for suspension pickup points, so Scott ended up fabricating his own design.

Nowadays, my Corvair has not only explosive power, but also remarkable road-holding to match it. I like to say that it handled pretty good when we started but now dives into corners like a BMW sports car.

An online Corvair board commenter called Scott and I, “Lewis & Clark” for our trailblazing with this swap. We certainly appreciate the praise. We set out to make this cost-effective for someone with the necessary skills, and we look forward to many more Corvair owners using our roadmap.
