Happy New Year to all. We hope your winter has been
tolerable and healthy. For those of you who are away
enjoying warmer climates, we miss you and wish you safe
travels home!
In order to remain at the Cortland Elks on Groton Ave. with
Randy Lewis catering, it was necessary to change our meet-
ing dates. I understand that our branch has met on the first
Monday of the month, but when we surveyed members, it
seems that the first Wednesday will work for almost all.
We continue with our theme of
Advocating for a Supportive Community
AAUW Cortland new meeting dates:
Wednesday March 4 -Women Role Models
Wednesday, April 1- Advocating in the Community
Wednesday, May 6 - Annual Meeting and StartSmart
Wed., June 3 - Panel discussion on Political Advocacy with a Woman’s Touch
In celebration of March as WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH,
we will hear from member Janet Ochs who will speak on
Women Role Models.
Fundraising
In January, our executive Board met to discuss fundraising. It is necessary for
our branch to raise funds to cover the cost of continuing our branch
(insurance, speakers’ dinners, printing, donations). We are considering 3 fund-
raisers for 2020 and hope that all members can contribute to all 3 events in
some manner.
1. Geranium and HERB sale on Tuesday, May 19. Order forms will be available
at the March 4 meeting.
2. A summer Garden Party in Mary Robert’s garden. We previously considered
a Garden Tour, but a party seems less time consuming to organize. Possible
Date: July 11 with rain date Sunday.
3. Garage Sale at Sheila’s on Groton Avenue. Possible Date: Sept. 11-12.
Our branch will need to discuss where the profits from these events will be
allocated- College scholarships, Childcare scholarships, AAUW funds.
FOOD & WINE FOR SCHOLARSHIPS
Join the ITHACA branch of AAUW Thursday, Feb-
ruary 20, in downtown Ithaca for their first events to
raise funds for AAUW Ithaca Branch Scholarship at
Tompkins Cortland Community College. They are
teaming up with Coltivare, Ithaca’s trendy farm to table
restaurant, which is also the laboratory for the college’s
restaurant and wine programs.
Coltivare is at 235 South Cayuga Street, near the
library. Park in the adjacent parking garage.
At 4:00 p.m., join them in the amphitheater at Coltivare for an interactive cooking demonstration, wine pairing, and
tasting presented by Executive Chef Patrick Blackman. At 5:00 p.m. they are hosting a scholarship reception at
Coltivare where you can meet two AAUW fellows and the Ithaca scholarship recipient. Light refreshments will be served
and there will be a cash bar.
The demonstration and reception is $45. A ticket for the reception only is $15. All proceeds from these events benefit
the scholarship. Reservations are required and should be made through their branch website: https://ithaca-
ny.aauw.net. Space is limited at the demonstration, so register now. The deadline is Feb.17.
Contact Alene Wyatt at [email protected] or 257-1894 with questions.
Our next AAUW-NYS convention and annual business meeting will be in Rochester April 24-
26, 2020. Registration is now open. The right to vote and the need to vote will be the focus of
the convention.
See the website to register for the convention and hotel. Aauwnyswp.aauw-nys.org.
Optional tours of the Seneca Falls Women’s Rights Center and the Susan B. Anthony House in
Rochester are also available.
THERE WILL BE NO SUMMER LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE
IN CAZENOVIA THIS YEAR.
All the more reason to participate in the state convention!
AAUW is committed to the passage and
ratification of the
Equal Rights Amendment.
In January of this year, Virginia became the 38th state to ratify the
Equal Rights Amendment. Originally proposed in 1972, states have
slowly voted to accept the ERA. The deadline, however, has long
passed and the current administration’s legal team states that it has
expired and that the issue is “dead.” This week, the House voted to
revive the ERA and to remove the deadline.
What is the ERA? Here is a summary from the AAUW Quickfacts on the AAUW website (aauw.org)
“The majority of Americans mistakenly believe that women and men have equal rights under the Constitution.
The 14th Amendment of the Constitution explicitly states that men are guaranteed equality under law but is
poignantly silent about women. The advancement of women’s equality continues incrementally through patchwork
legislation and court decisions, but women’s equality under law remains illusory because these laws can be
changed or even revoked at the whim of legislators and judges. The Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) provides the
constitutional guarantee that all men and women are truly equal under the law and that these rights cannot
easily be abridged.
What It Says:
Section 1: Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on
account of sex.
Section 2: The Congress shall have the power to enforce, by appropriate legislation, the provisions of this article.
Section 3: This amendment shall take effect two years after the date of ratification
Why We Need the ERA :
The lack of constitutional equality reaches every aspect of women’s lives. The ERA would clarify, once and for all,
that sex discrimination in employment, reproductive rights, insurance, Social Security, education, and more is a
violation of our constitutional rights as Americans. The ERA provides the opportunity to seek legal recourse when
an individual faces sex discrimination.”
