C ORTELYOU

After existing as rural farmland for centuries, Victorian Flatbush was developed in the early 1900s as a subur-ban respite from Manhattan. Early real estate developer T.B. Ackerson dubbed the area “the village in the city,” a description that contemporary residents still find appropriate. Most importantly, at the center of this “village” is Cortelyou, the main street and shopping district where residents go to work, run errands, socialize, and relax. Cortelyou Road has been the main commercial corridor of Victorian Flatbush for over one hundred years, and it still retains its indispensable reputation today. The businesses of Cortelyou are varied, reflecting the surrounding neighborhood itself. From Coney Island Avenue to East 18th Street, Cortelyou boasts food from around the world, family-owned groceries and laundromats, hip bars and trendy clothing stores, art and dance studios, and shops with merchandise ranging from toys to cameras. On Sundays from 8 am to 4 pm, the Cortelyou Greenmarket offers local produce sales from Argyle to Rugby, complimented by a craft fair along Rugby during the same hours, and every year in September, Cortelyou hosts the famous Flatbush Frolic street fair with daylong activities. Cortelyou is well-respected as the economic center of the neighborhood for locals and non-residents alike.
