A Unique Approach

With over 300 materials and corrosion engineers worldwide, DNV integrates our knowledge of risk with proactive management of underlying root causes. This optimizes costs and improves plant life management, all without compromising nuclear safety requirements.

In a challenging business environment, effective risk management is a fundamental prerequisite for success. DNV combines technical expertise and advanced risk methodologies with management consulting skills to form a new and different type of consulting service provider. Our highly-qualified, cross-disciplinary team offers a full range of services to support our clients, ranging from early stage hazard identification, consequence assessment, likelihood estimation, through to advanced risk-based decision support, and all the steps in between.

Having one of the largest corrosion science groups in North America, DNV provides leading edge corrosion and

materials research, testing and failure analysis. Our laboratory can conduct research and testing in a wide range of environments, including high temperature and pressure, under a NQA-1 compliant quality assurance program.

We utilize Ph.D. scientists, registered engineers and NACE certified specialists with broad industry knowledge and a clear understanding of regulatory requirements to develop cost effective solutions to corrosion and materials problems with the specific needs of our clients in mind. Our expert staff can help you make informed decisions about the type, cost and urgency of remedial measures in support of on-going operations, new construction and life extension decisions. This will lead to selection of longer life materials, durable and protective coatings and corrosion control measures.

concepts and an understanding of aging mechanisms we can help:

• Anticipate and reduce future failures • Help secure re-licensing • Implement causation models to integrate failure modes and

operational causes (e.g. safety culture, human performance, asset management)

• Assist in making sound system, structure and component (SSC) investment decisions

• Use quantitative leading performance indicators in proac-tive plant management related to both management systems and SSC performance.

Success Stories

We have utilized our dynamic research, engineering and risk management approach to successfully help a number of clients manage the life of their nuclear facilities. Following are some examples: Buried Pipe Corrosion

With our extensive experience in cathodic protection and pipe-line integrity assessment, we have worked with several nuclear utilities assessing their buried pipe infrastructure and made rec-ommendations on system upgrades and modifications. This has included evaluating the underground piping, condenser water boxes, tube sheets, intake structure cofferdams, barge slip, trav-eling screens, storage tanks, and building and cooling tower foundations.

Nuclear Waste Storage

We have been conducting research for the Hanford tank reserva-tion, which contains approximately 50 million gallons of liquid radioactive waste. The waste is stored in 177 underground dou-ble-shelled storage tanks. Current plans call for treatment and disposal of the waste. While plans and arrangements are being finalized for the treatment and disposal, DNV is conducting on-going research to better understand the effect of the waste com-position on tank integrity risks. We are also helping to establish operational guidelines for extending the operating life of the tanks. As a result of our efforts, the operating companies at the Hanford site have saved several hundred million dollars in oper-ating expenses through waste stream reductions.

Heat Exchanger Corrosion

A nuclear plant was experiencing galvanic corrosion problems with component cooling water heat exchangers. Specifically, carbon steel baffles appeared to have experienced rapid degrada-tion due to galvanic coupling to stainless steel tubulars. Utiliz-ing our understanding of the regulatory constraints and our ex-pertise in materials and corrosion to quantify the extent of the problem, we were able to make a recommendation for alterna-tive materials and design alternatives to mitigate corrosion and extend next generation heat exchanger life.
