Do you have a reason to celebrate? A birthday, anniversary, graduation, sweet 16, quncinerra, bridal shower, baby shower, wedding, or any other reason to get together? Don’t know where to start? Now, the help you are looking for is available for your budget. Frugal and Fabulous party planners and owners Jenica Destrampe and Rachel Rudel met while two of their friends got married, they were both in the wedding and they both helped plan the wedding. “Over the years we have planned many events. Every one turned out to be frugal and fabulous,” said Jenica As time went on Jenica and Rachel planned their own parties and events as well as their friends and that’s when friends and family suggested that they go into business and offer their services to everyone. Frugal and Fabulous is a way for the two friends to do what they love to do and help bring income into their homes. As stay at home moms, they have had many reasons to have a party, and with one income, sometimes it can be hard to get the effect that they wanted. Jenica and Rachel have found ways to have what looks like an extravagant party for pennies on the dollar. From where to have it to how to thank guests for attending and everything in between. They can get it all done for you. First thing is first. You set the budget. Then Jenica and Rachel customize every event to you, the client. They can work out something that fits your pocket book. They can break it down to fit just what you need. If you want them to do the center pieces only, just the party favors, thank you gifts alone, design create and mail the invitations, or do

it all they can help. Frugal and Fabulous understands that the economy is unhealthy but that’s no reason to let life’s celebrations go unnoticed! You can give them the event and what you want done and they can come to an arrangement that suits everyone best.

“We live our lives knowing that the positive we put out always comes back to us,” said Rachel.

It doesn’t matter the size of the event. What matters to Jenica and Rachel is what you are celebrating and that everyone on every budget has the opportunity to celebrate. It could be a small family gathering to mark the occasion of a new family member,

a promotion at work, the start of a new life with someone you love, a child accomplishing a goal they set for themselves, a new home. “Life has many wonderful things that are given to us and we must make memories that last a life time. It’s the good that we must

hold on to and never forget,” Rachel and Jenica agree. Contact Jenica and Rachel with Frugal and Fabulous at 745-3327 or

346-9951 or at [email protected]. “Celebrate the happiness that friends are always giving, make every day a holiday and celebrate just living!” - Poet Amanda Bradley

Maricopa Gusher Days Parade Thank You

The annual Gusher Day Parade and Street Fair has come and gone once more. The event brought in much needed funding towards our scholarship awards and other yearly programs that we are involved with. We would like to thank our Grand Sponsor Nestle Purina for their continued support of this grateful community. When I contacted Paula Harris, Human Resource Department Manager about being our Grand Sponsor, she replied that we send our request and they would do their best to approve the request. Nestle does a lot for the community and provides jobs to some 90 employees. They have been there during our back to school supplies drive and gives a helping hand at the yearly stand down for homeless Veterans of Kern, helping us provide a new warm winter coat for 120 homeless Veterans this past year. During the Thanksgiving week, we cook a complete Thanksgiving diner for the home bound seniors throughout Maricopa, again we thank you for the donation of the Turkeys each year, and we have asked and would be honored to have either Paula Harris or her associate Ruth Jared as the presenter of the scholarships this year. On behalf of the residents, we thank you for all the help and support for our small community.

May 19, 2009 Special Election Ballot Propositions

Wes Morris’ Picks

Proposition 1A – NoProposition 1B – NoProposition 1C – NoProposition 1D – Ask a smokerProposition 1E – Ask a millionaireProposition 1F – No

“What joy!” This is what our feature writer Wes Morris wrote two weeks ago in our special election issue of the Taft Independent. Wes told us that we are having another special election on Tuesday May 19, 2009 in what will cost the state millions of dollars. And typical to most of these ballot propositions, they are overly confusing and something our paid state legislators should be taking care of. We suggest that the State of California is in big trouble, not so much because we have such

huge deficits and massive debt. It’s because we lack leadership in the legislature or the Governor’s office. California is suffering from an existential lack of leadership. A few years back, California’s voters recalled Governor Gray Davis for huge deficits and our massive debt. Nothing has changed since then, and it has only gotten worse. We blame a leaderless Democrat majority in the Assembly and Senate, and a mushy Republican governor who said he was a conservative, but suffers from wanting to be liked too much. And, the Governor really hasn’t taken on the legislature like past Governors Ronald Reagan, Pete Wilson or George Deukmejian did. We think the solution is for voters to quit electing and re-election liberal democrats to the legislature, and for a real leader to emerge and govern California like our overtaxed voters deserve.

Erickson and Brown Funeral Home is celebrating 70 Years in Taft, and to show thier appreciation of the community, the owners have donated $5,000 to the Oilworkers Monument Committee to help pay for creation of the statue in honor of oilworkers. Prior to opening the Erickson and Brown Funeral Home in 1939, William O. Erickson and Max P. Brown both worked for Sam Withrow. Mr. Withrow owned and operatd a funeral home at 102

Asher Street. Mr. Erickson arrived in Taft first and a few years later brought his nephew, Max Brown, to Taft. In 1937 Mr. Withrow built a “state of the art” mortuary building at 501 Lucard Street and moved the business from Asher Street to the Lucard location. In 1939 Mr. Erickson and Mr. Brown left the employ of Mr. Withrow and started their own business called Erickson and Brown Funeral Home at 300 Lucard Street. After World War 2, Mr. Brown purchased the mortuary building at 501 Lucard Street from Mr. Withrow and moved Erickson and Brown Funeral Home to its current location. In the late 1940’s Mr. Erickson and Mr. Brown hired Wally Carnes. Over the years Mr. Carnes became an intregal member and part owner of the business. In 1977 Charles V. and Jennifer Landwehr moved to Taft and Charles was hired by Erickson and Brown Funeral Home as an embalmer. Two years later the Landwehrs were offered the opportunity to purchase stock in the business and, of course, they did. Bruce Ioppini joined in ownership in 1981 and remained for four years. After Bruce left, the Landwehr’s became sole owners. The years rolled by and the Landwehrs raised three sons in Taft and continued the tradition of “service, understanding, dignity, and experience” that had been established by the funeral home founders. In 1987, Taft native, Angie Milner, joined the team and has since become an invaluable and trusted employee and friend. Charlie, Jennifer and Angie are proud to be a part of Taft and are privileged to own and work at one of Taft’s oldest, continually operated, family owned businesses.

The Taft office of the Bureau of Land Management held a Grand Opening for its fire satation on Center Street in Taft today. The Bureau of Land Management’s Midway fire crew will begin operating this year from the crew’s new quarters in Taft. The public was invited to help dedicate the fire station, located at 801 Center St., at 10 a.m. today. “The Taft location will give us better coverage for areas on the west side including the Carrizo Plain National Monument,” said Tim Smith, manager for BLM’s Bakersfield Field Office. In addition to the fire crew, a BLM law enforcement ranger will be based at the fire station. It will also be used as a source of information for people visiting the Carrizo, he added. “We would like to thank the City of Taft, a Carrizo gateway community, for making its former fire station available for the BLM crew. We look forward to building an even stronger partnership,” he said. “The City of Taft is looking forward to a continuing relationship with BLM. We would like to thank BLM for utilizing the fire house and welcome them to the community,” said Bob Gorson, city manager.

Caltrans, CHP Dedicate Higway 119 Safety Corridor, More Enforcement

Caltrans and the California Highway Patrol on Thursday unveiled new signage designating Highway 119 a “Safety Corridor” promising continued funding for increased traffic enforcement an safety one the 2 lane highway connecting Taft with Bakersfield. Since increased highway patrol law enforcement went into effect in November 2007, traffic accident fatalities dropped from 8 deaths in one year, to one in 2009, according to Councilman Cliff Thompson. Taft City Councilman Cliff Thompson and 4th District Supervisor Ray Watson keynoted the news conference announcement designating the road connect the two communities as a safety corridor which brings with it continued funding for more than 1,000 hours of overtime for California Highway Patrol traffic law enforcement and future improvements of the highway that connects Eastern and Western Kern County. Councilman Thompson said that the continuing increased CHP traffic enforcement had saved many lives. Supervisor Watson said that planned improvements would be welcomed and increase highway safety.

Randy MillerExecutive Director, Taft District Chamber of Commerce

The Chamber had its Annual Chamber Golf Tournament on Saturday May 9th. Ken McMinn was our Chairman and he organized a great event. We had a wonderful group of volunteers who helped, many stayed all day long, to make this annual fundraiser a great success. Of course, we had very special sponsors that we will give due credit to in our Monthly newsletter. They make the tournament possible. The Chamber is now focusing our attention towards the 1st Rails to Trails Car Show coming up on June 13th. We feel this will be a new way to showcase Taft. We have a passport booklet that we will be handing out to encourage visitors and residents alike to visit our business sponsors in the downtown area. It will be a grand day for Taft, as many of the vehicles on display will be coming from out of town. We hope to show these folks a good time, share little history about Taft, and give them some reasons why we think and know that living in “Taft is the Best of Places”. For more info, call the Chamber. We had a ribbon cutting this past Wed after the Sit N’ Sip for our newest Chamber member, Kelly Ngo with “Passion for Nails”. They

are located in the Pilot Plaza next to the Taft Crude Coffee House. They are a full service nail salon and welcome you to come by and get acquainted and see what a nice job they did on there renovation. We held a ribbon cutting recently for the Taft Community Garden group. They have signed a lease for the West Kern Water District empty lot on 9th Street. They will have raised planters from which they will grow fruits and vegetables. They are looking for charter members to donate time, materials, funds, and energy to make this a reality. If you would like to return to the soil, this could be for you. Right now, they are in need of a small office trailer that has a restroom and working space. If you locate one that is not being used or that can be donated to this group, who are 501 - 3 (c) non-profit, please contact the Chamber at 765-2165. On Friday May 15th, we are holding a ribbon cutting for the Bureau of Land Management at 10:00am at the old City fire station on Center Street. They are leasing from the City to house their fire fighters and rangeland firefighting equipment. They were stationed near Shafter but this facility is much closer to their coverage area of operations. The Taft Chamber is working hard for Taft to become a destination City. We are looking for your thoughts and ideas. Drop by and let’s discuss them. Live in Taft, don’t just reside here. Be a part of the solutions.

Now Celebrating Our 20th Year

Aries (March 21-April 19): This weekend’s going to be a lot of fun for you, but that doesn’t excuse you from following through on your myriad of responsibilities.

Taurus (April 20-May 20): Jealousy is a very common emotion and you shouldn’t feel bad for feeling it. It’s how you react to it that shows your true colors – and hopefully they’re not green.

Gemini (May 21-June 20): Just because you can’t see how badly you need something doesn’t mean you don’t need it. Listen to your friends on this one; they know better.

Cancer ( June 21-July 22): Aggression’s going to be the name of the game this week – it’s the only way to get what you want. Letting up at all could mean missing this opportunity.

Leo ( July 23-August 22): You’re going to surprise everyone this week, but no one will be more surprised than yourself. This is a good thing, as there’s no tougher critic for you than you.

Virgo (August 23-September 22): Others are being wishy-washy with their feelings this week, and that’s all the more reason for you to stick to your guns.

Libra (September 23-October 22): Use your smooth talking abilities this week to get everyone to your line of thinking. Don’t oversell the point though, or you’ll be tuned out.

Scorpio (October 23-November 22): The night is darkest before the dawn, and rarely has that been more true than it is for you now. Great things are coming your way, so just hang tough.

Sagittarius (November 23-December 21): An impulsive move this week could prove to be the game-changer at work. Take that chance and you won’t be sorry. Capricorn (December 22-January 19): Domestic responsibilities and business interests are pulling you in separate directions. You have to come up with a good balance for the two.

Aquarius ( January 20-February 19): There is no point to holding grudges, particularly when you’re not entirely in the right and the guilty party isn’t entirely guilty. Just let it go.

Pisces (February 20-March 20): Just because you’re optimistic does not mean you’re not realistic. Don’t let anyone tell you the glass is half empty when you know darn well it’s half full.

If your birthday is this week: You may feel like you’re alone and backed into a corner, but that couldn’t be less true. Take a closer look around you. Those walls you think are behind you are actually the friends and family who support you. Just because you haven’t asked for help doesn’t mean they aren’t 100% prepared to give it to you anyway.
