Dear Parents / Carers, CONFIRMATION

Our most important Celebration this term is the reception of the Sacrament of Confirmation by our Grade 6 candidates.

This year our celebration is on Friday 19th May at St Andrew’s Church at 6.30pm and will be celebrated by Bishop Mark Edwards. The children will take part in a Reflection Day on Tuesday 16th May at St Joseph’s Convent in Williamstown.

A Family Evening was held at Corpus Christi on Tuesday 9th May for parents and sponsors of children who are preparing to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. This session was facilitated by the Reverend Elio Capra who supported us in deepening our understanding of this special sacrament. The Senior Unit teachers worked with our candidates to continue their learning and understanding of the Sacrament of Confirmation.

We ask that you keep all our candidates, their parents and sponsors in your prayers as the children prepare to receive this very special sacrament.

MOTHER’S DAY REFLECTION All Parents and Carers are invited to our Mother’s Day Reflection on Friday 12th May at 9:00am in the Multi-Function Room. After our Reflection mothers, grandmothers and friends will be able to visit their children in classrooms. Everyone is then invited back to the Multi-Function Room for some Morning Tea. A reminder that our Mother’s day Stall will be held tomorrow Thursday 11th May.

NAPLAN We wish all of the grade 3 & 5 children well as they continue to participate in the NAPLAN assessments this week. NAPLAN assessments have been undertaken yesterday, today and will continue tomorrow, Thursday.

TRAFFIC SAFETY and PARKING - The safety of all our children is paramount

Thank you to the families who always take extreme care when dropping off and picking up children in the school carpark. I would like to encourage all families to continue to be extremely cautious and ensure the smooth flow of traffic through the carpark by not stopping unnecessarily and holding up traffic. Please ensure that you adhere to only SAFE and acceptable practices when parking and dropping off and picking up children. It has been most distressing to observe some very dangerous practices by some parents / carers when driving near school. Please remember that NO child is to leave via the carpark gates unaccompa-nied by an adult or caregiver. Thank you for your support. We look forward to your support in keeping all our children safe! Thank you. With kind regards, Linda Roynic.

ARRIVING TO SCHOOL ON TIME

Numbers of children coming late to school has diminished a little over the past few weeks. Thankyou for making the effort to get your child/ren here before our school day begins at 8:45am. 10 minutes late results in nearly an hour of learning children miss each week. Students need to be here on time to feel comfortable not anxious, to not distract others, to hear instructions, to be prepared for the day, to join in community happen-ings e.g. prayer, news etc. Arriving early allows settling in time, contact with the teacher- time with friends and a calm start to the learning day.

PLEASED DON’T PARK IN OUR NEIGBOURS YARDS, DRIVEWAYS OR NATURE STRIPS. Unfortunately we have has some concerns raised by some of our neighbours about our families parking in the areas mentioned. When parents have been politely asked to move, the response by some families has been less than polite. It has recently meant one of our neighbours was unable to get out to collect their son from school on time, causing anxiety and slight distress. We ask all our families to be mindful, courteous and respectful when parking as well as when and leaving, bearing in mind not only the safety of our community but also the car parking etiquette and laws that need to be observed. Council and police have been informed.

Thank you, Viv Adamko, Deputy Principal

P & F Mother’s Day Stall

PRAYER FOR ALL MOTHERS

Loving God, you gift us with mothers who give us life and love. They show us a glimpse of what you are like and the unconditional, tender love you

have for us. Be at their side in times of sadness, worry and joy.

We pray they be a sign of God’s love for us in all they do.

We pray they are strengthened by God to always care for their children.

We pray for mothers who may not be with their families, but who care for them from far.

We pray for mothers who have died, that they are with Jesus in Heaven.

We pray that we will appreciate all our mothers do for us, and that we will

always try to show them we love them. Amen

Science in the New Victorian Curriculum

Science is a subject that has often stood alone and has been misunderstood. It is often perceived by children as something too hard or boring or that they need to be really smart to study it at a higher level! Science and its importance has become increasingly prominent in Education over the past few years. Fewer students elect to study the sciences and therefore it leads to gaps in the professions that can’t be filled. Our new Victorian Curriculum provides teaching and learning that connects Science to the everyday world of our students and builds on the knowledge they learn at each level of the Primary school curriculum. It also makes connections to engineering, technology, design , Maths ,Thinking skills and digital technologies. The Science curriculum provides opportunities for children to develop an understanding of important scientific concepts and processes, the practices used to develop scientific knowledge, the contribution of science to our culture and society, and its applications in our lives. The curriculum supports students to develop the scientific knowledge, understandings and skills to make informed decisions about local, national and global issues and to participate, if they so wish, in science-related careers. In addition to its practical applications, learning science is a valuable pursuit in its own right. Students can experience the joy of scientific discovery and nurture their natural curiosity about the world around them. In doing this, they develop critical and creative thinking skills and challenge themselves to identify questions, apply new knowledge, explain science phenomena and draw evidence-based conclusions using scientific methods. The wider benefits of this 'scientific literacy' are well established, including giving students the capability to investigate the world around them and the way it has changed and changes as a result of human activity. Opening the world of the sciences to children can be exciting and engage and encourage students to explore different possibilities. The key is to let them explore in a safe supported way so they come to understand that science can be fun! Science involves a lot of talking and listening to others and it develops patience too; a lot of the time in science things don't happen overnight. It also develops skills for life such as perseverance, problem-solving and researching. It helps children to think about what could happen before they do it, to create a hypothesis in their mind. Then they learn that not everything works the first time. Some experiments fall in a heap and you have to find out what went wrong, and try again. Science in school also teaches children about the way the world works eg, how clothes are made or why volcanoes erupt. In science they are taught to go about getting a whole lot of information from different people and sources – experts, teachers – it's not just Googling for the answer online. It's about saying, ‘I've looked at a whole lot of things and made my own opinion.” It can spark ideas in their minds that they, too, may one day be capable of creating solutions to big problems.

Science at Home

Explanations Do Not Always Help Explanations, even simple ones, do not always help children (or adults, for that matter!) understand complex ideas. The simple answer is to worry less about explaining to your child, and spend more time modelling the fun of science: going on walks, mixing things, testing to see what will happen, observing carefully and wondering along with your child.

Science Is About Trying to Make Sense of the World Science is not simply about knowing information—it is equally a way of trying to make sense of the world. Scientists must ask questions, design investigations, try to make sense of the information they have gathered during the investigations, and communicate and defend their thinking to others. They don’t always find the answers to their questions, and they don’t always agree.

Don’t immediately correct your child. If your child says something scientifically incorrect, help them discover for what is correct rather than correcting. For example, if they say “heavy things sink, you can ask, “Which heavy things have you seen sink?” Or, “I wonder if we can find something heavy that can float?”

Model curiosity. Wonder aloud: “I wonder what will happen to this pudding mix when we put the water in?”

Page 5: CORPUS CHRISTI PRIMARY SCHOOL · Uniforms provide children with a sense of pride in their school and a genuine sense of belonging to the school community. Children are required to

Help your child discover the wonders of science by experimenting with these simple ideas. Home-made ice blocks can show freezing and melting. Shining a torch at a mirror at night illustrates reflection. Flying a kite shows wind speed and direction. Looking at the stars and discussions about whole new galaxies can open up. Adding various objects to a bath-time boat illustrates flotation. Watching a puddle change on the way to school for several days shows evaporation. Leaving an egg in vinegar for a couple of days shows how the acid will eat away the shell. Putting a celery stalk in a glass half full of water and coloured dye allows kids to witness capillary action. Experimenting with various foods such as leaving bread to mould and talking about tinned peaches shows decompo-

sition and preservation. This link will lead you and your child to a website for children that explains some of the Sciences and what they do in a simple easy to understand way. http://www.sciencekids.co.nz/sciencefacts/careers.html

SENIOR UNIT

Next week we look forward to celebrating the Sacrament of Confirmation with our grade 6 students. On Friday 19th May at 6:30pm, students will renew their Baptismal Promises, be anointed with oil, and receive a special blessing ‘Laying of Hands’ to become adult members of the Catholic Church. Students have worked hard on their Saint investigations, recalling traditions and rituals of Confirmation, along with identifying the Gifts and Fruit of the Holy Spirit in others. Along with all this, we have continued to sharpen our revising skills when reading and planning to write Narratives and Explanation Texts. Students worked in co-operative groups to research and sort information on the different systems of the body to share with others as an expert.

Over the next few weeks, students will be working on expanding their skills, knowledge and understanding of multiplication and division strategies during Mathematics workshops. During Inquiry sessions, students will begin to investigate the parts and func-tion of the male and female reproductive systems along with exploring symbols of Confirmation and enhancing their understand-ing of the rituals involved in the Sacrament. Over the next, few weeks ask us about our learning using the following question:

Where do you feel stress?

What de-escalation strategies work for you?

What are the symbols of Confirmation? Specialists Day will be Friday this week. Students require sports uniform on Friday.

Regards, Leanne Spence, Senior Unit Leader

FOUNDATION UNIT Thanks to all families who attended our Prayers in Pyjamas night. It was a great night and we hope you enjoyed our performances and the opportunity to pray with your child/ren.

We are continuing our focus on our Community, investigating the helpers that live within it. This week we have a visit from a dentist who will discuss their role and give students tips to maintain good oral hygiene. Next week we are looking forward to our first walking excursion to the Anderson Street Fire Station.

In Wellbeing, we have been learning ways to de-escalate and become "ready to learn". You may hear your child/ren discuss strat-egies such as puffer fish, clam cuddle, starfish and turtle tongue. These activities facilitate self regulation through breathing and input into muscles, skin and joints.

Our Numeracy focus is subitising, which builds the automatic recognition of groups of numbers without needing to count them all, for example, recognising the 4 dot pattern on a dice automatically.

The children have been working on their independence when swapping their take home book and shortly will receive their read-ing record log book to encourage greater independence. We thank you for your support with this.

Yours in partnership, The Foundation Team

MIDDLE UNIT

This week our Year 3 students are undertaking their first NAPLAN and we wish them all the best! During the following weeks, Middle students will explore Australian History through the eyes of convicts, explorers and Indigenous peoples. Students will develop an understanding of how:

Aboriginal people were impacted in many ways when the First Fleet arrived and started the colony

Life in England and Australia was very different during that time

Convicts were sent to Australia for many reasons Australia has changed over time Students will explore images and stories and immerse themselves into the lives of our early Australians. In Numeracy, students have been learning about and applying the strategies they can use to solve multiplication equa-tions. Students have been learning about the different ways we can partition (break numbers up) to assist with solving multiplication problems. Partitioning is one of the great strategies students use to show their thinking, as it connects back to place value and number sense. As seen in the following examples:

Regards, Ms Kim Gleeson, Middle Unit Leader

ARRAYS GRID BOX

JUNIOR UNIT It has been a busy two weeks for the Juniors with the Camp program over two days and an enjoyable excursion to Fairy Park. Last week students were engaged in science experiments through their incursion with ‘Hands on Science.’ This showed students how the Water Cycle works.

Next week, the Juniors will be continuing their learning with addition in their workshop groups and using the information gained from Fairy Park to assist them in writing interesting Narratives. We will continue learning about Weather and the Water Cycle and will begin learning about the role of the Holy Spirit in the Sacrament of Confirmation.

Upcoming events: Friday 12th May, Mother’s Day Liturgy 9:00am MFR hosted by Juniors. & Thursday 18th May, Junior Mass
