Notice from the ChanceryArchdiocese of Mobile

To: All Clergy, Religious and Laity From: Rev. Msgr. Stephen E. Martin, V.G.

Subject: NRLC Cards Prohibited

We have received notice from the United StatesConference of Catholic Bishops that the National Rightto Life Committee has planned an event involving thedistribution of voter guide cards in Catholic Churcheson June 24, 2012 and/or July 1, 2012. We have beenadvised that these cards will highlight the positions ofthe Democratic and Republican presidential candidatesin such a narrow way as to potentially violate theprohibition of churches being involved in politicalactivities as per the section 501 (c) (3) of the InternalRevenue Service Code.

These cards have the potential of distracting from theFortnight for Freedom sponsored by the USCCB bygiving the impression that what is to be a campaign ofprayer, education and witness in support of religiousfreedom has become a partisan political effort. Therefore, the NRLC cards are not to be distributedor placed in any Catholic parishes or institutions ofthe Archdiocese of Mobile.

The Fortnight for Freedom is not about the presidentialelection but rather about supporting and defending ourconstitutionally guaranteed right to freedom of religion. For more information about the Fortnight for Freedomwhich will be observed from June 21 to July 4, pleasego to www.mobilearchdiocese.org and click on the iconon the lower left that reads Archdiocese of MobileFortnight for Freedom. Among the many resourcesavailable are flyers, FAQs, homily helps and prayercards. Many thanks for your cooperation in the matterand for your witness to our freedom of religion in theUnited States.

St. Katherine DrexelAmerican Saint

1858-1955

If your father is an international banker and you ride in a

private railroad car, you are not likely to be drawn into a lifeof voluntary poverty. But if your stepmother opens yourhome to the poor three days each week and your father spendshalf an hour each evening in prayer, it is not impossible thatyou devote your life to the poor and give away millions ofdollars. Katharine Drexel did that. She was born in Philadelphia in 1858. She had anexcellent education and traveled widely. As a rich girl, shehad a grand debut into society. But when she nursed herstepmother through a three-year terminal illness, she saw thatall the Drexel money could not buy safety from pain or death, and her life took a profound turn. As a young girl, traveling with her family in their privaterailroad car through the Dakotas, Katherine becameconcerned with the plight of the “Indians” (native Americans)and she was appalled when she read Helen Hunt’s account inA Century of Dishonor. On a European tour, she met PopeLeo XIII and asked him to send missionaries to Wyoming forher friend Bishop James O’Connor to help the “Indians.” Thepope replied, “Why don’t you become a missionary?” Thissurprised her, and she began to consider new possibilities. Back home, she visited the Dakotas, met the Sioux leaderRed Cloud and began her systematic aid to Indian missions. Then, in the south, she also became concerned for the plightof the Americans of African descent. As the sole surviving member of her family, she inheritedher entire family fortune. She could easily have married. Butafter much discussion with Bishop O’Connor, she decided togive her life and all of her fortune to serve others who werepoor and in need. She wrote in 1889, “The feast of St. Josephbrought me the grace to give the remainder of my life to theIndians and the Colored.” Newspaper headlines about herdecision screamed, “Gives Up Seven Million!” No longer traveling in a private railroad car, she alwaystook the cheapest fare, riding coach, and carrying her lunch ina little brown paper bag.

After three and a half years of training with the Sisters ofMercy, she founded the “Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament forIndians and Colored People” (now known as the Sisters of theBlessed Sacrament). In 1894 she opened a mission school inSanta Fe. Its success quickly led to the founding of numerousother schools by her Order. By 1942 she had a system ofblack Catholic schools in 13 states, plus 40 mission centersand 23 rural schools, and she established 50 missions forIndians in 16 states. Segregationists harassed her workthroughout. Two saints met when she was advised by Mother Cabrini(who was another foundress of a religious order of Sisters). Mother Cabrini gave Katherine helpful advice about dealingwith “church politics” in order to get her Order’s Ruleapproved in Rome. Katharine received the approval in 1913. Her crowning achievement was the founding of XavierUniversity in New Orleans in 1915, the first university in theUnited States for African Americans. At 77, she suffered a heart attack and was forced to retire. Apparently her life was over. But now came almost 20 yearsof quiet, intense prayer from a small room overlooking thesanctuary. Small notebooks and slips of paper record hervarious prayers, ceaseless aspirations and meditations. Shedied at 96 and was canonized in 2000 by Pope John Paul II.

Some information from Saint of the Day, American Catholic

Corpus Christi Connection!A now deceased parishioner of Corpus Christi, HelenGorman, was a young student nurse in Philadelphia whenMother Katharine had to be hospitalized. The hospital whereshe was admitted was one which was owned and operated byMother Katherine’s own religious Order. When the Sisterswere going to put her in a private room, Mother Katherineobjected, and she insisted that they give her the leastexpensive bed — a bed in one of the wards. The Sisters puther in a ward where all of the other 4 or 5 beds were empty sothat she would still have a room to herself. When MotherKatherine would periodically ask, “Where are the otherpatients for this room?” her Sisters would say that they didn’thave patients for those beds yet, but when they got morepatients for those beds they would be placed in that ward. Mother Katherine also objected when the Sisters wanted toassign a private-duty nurse to care for her in the ward. Sheinsisted that she would be treated like all of the other patientsand would be taken care of by the regular nurses on duty forthat floor. Helen Gorman recalled that the Sisters put a chairjust outside Mother Katherine’s ward, and instructed Helen tosit there without letting Mother Katherine know she wasthere; and whenever she could see that Mother Katherineneeded assistance, Helen was to go into the room as thoughshe was the regular-duty nurse just making her routine rounds. We are grateful that our parishioner, Helen Gorman (whodied in 2005 at the age of 91), was able to give to us at CorpusChristi in Mobile a special and inspirational account aboutKatherine Drexel from Helen’s own personal encounter withher and Helen’s experience as a young student nurse caringfor St. Katherine Drexel.

Trouble All Over

In 1913, the Georgia Legislature, hoping to stop theBlessed Sacrament Sisters from teaching at a Maconschool, tried to pass a law that would have prohibitedwhite teachers from teaching black students. In 1922 in Beaumont, Texas, a sign was posted bylocal Klansmen on the door of a church where theSisters of the Blessed Sacrament had opened a school. “We want an end of services here,” the note read, followed by offensive statements against the Sistersand those they were serving. The note ended with,“Suppress it [your services] in one week or floggingwith tar and feathers will follow.” A few days later, aviolent thunderstorm ripped through Beaumont, destroying the headquarters of the KKK, killing two ofits members. The Sisters were never threatened again! In 1915, when Mother Katherine purchased anabandoned university building to open XavierPreparatory School in New Orleans, vandals smashedevery window. In the late 1920s, when MotherKatherine found property in New Orleans forexpanding Xavier University, she used a third party asa purchasing agent to keep the transaction from fallingthrough. When the handsome campus was dedicatedin October 1932, a priest gazed upon the expensiveIndiana limestone buildings and remarked in Latin:“What a waste!” Mother Katherine never heard theremark. The woman who had spent $656,000 for theland and new buildings watched the dedicationceremony from a third-floor window, far away fromthe dignitaries’ platform. Peter Finney, Jr., editor & general manager of the Clarion

Herald, newspaper of the Archdiocese of New Orleans, as

published in St. Anthony Messenger

To the members of her Order: “Resolve tomanifest our Mission generously and with no half-hearted, timorous dread of the opinions of Church andmen.... You have no time to occupy your thoughts withconsideration of what others will think. Your businessis simply, ‘What will my Father in heaven think?’”

St. Katharine Drexel

St. Katharine In Louisiana St. Katharine Drexel is a saint with particularsignificance to south Louisiana, especially the Diocese ofLafayette. She visited the diocese several times in the1920s during the episcopacy of the late Bishop Jules B.Jeanmard, first Bishop of Lafayette. Together theyselected sites for rural schools for African Americanchildren, places where there were no schools for them. It is useful to recall that in colonial times, during the1700s, when the area of Louisiana was under French orSpanish rule, government regulations required thatpeople who were held in slavery should be baptized andgiven Catholic religious instruction. This was in contrastto Protestant areas where slaves were forbidden to gatherfor religious services or receive religious instruction. By the time Louisiana became part of the UnitedStates (due to the Louisiana Purchase, 1803) the religioustraditions of Catholicism were well established amongAfrican Americans in South Louisiana. After the CivilWar, many of the freed slaves continued their affiliationwith the Catholic Church. Notwithstanding someneglect, they had churches, but no schools. Then along came Mother Katharine and BishopJeanmard who proceeded to establish rural schools forAfrican American children all over South Louisiana. Itis estimated she established some 40 schools, in areasnow included in the Dioceses of Lafayette and BatonRouge, and the Archdiocese of New Orleans. Mother Katherine had a great love for the Eucharist, and felt everyone, regardless of race or circumstances oflife, had a right to knowthat Christ loves them somuch that he gives himselfin the Eucharist as asymbol of his love. Andshe determined the bestway to spread thisknowledge was to provideschools. From an article by Kathleen

God has sent t he Spirit of his Son int o our

heart s, cry ing out , “Abba, Fat her!” Galatians 4:6

We are taught to call him Father. Perhaps we take that

name for granted, as though we somehow deserve it, not

realizing that our God could have chosen some other name

by which we are to come into his presence... Boss, perhaps...

or Ruler... Master... Tyrant... Potentate... Supreme

Being... but instead the name he taught us is... Father.

What tender meaning there; what confidence and hope that

name is meant to inspire. And what responsibility for all who

bear the name of “Father” here on earth, and thus are called

(at home and church) to show by word and deed and attitude

what God is like.

“God’s love has many aspects. In particular, God loves us

as our Father.... God’s love for us as our Father is a strong

and faithful love, a love that is full of mercy.... It is the reality

of God’s love for us as our Father that explains why Jesus told

us when we pray to address God as “Abba, Father.“

Pope John Paul II

For our fathers who have given us life and love,

that we may show them respect and love.

For fathers who have lost a child through death,

that their faith may give them hope, and their

family and friends support and console them.

For fathers who are ill,

that they may restored to health.

For fathers who have died,

God, bring them into the joy of your kingdom .

God our Father, in your wisdom and love you

made all things. Bless our fathers. Strengthen them

with the power of your Spirit. Let their example of

faith and love shine forth. Grant that we, their sons

and daughters, may honor them always with true

respect and love. We ask this in the name of Jesus.

A Blessing Prayer for Fathers

Blessed are you, Lord and Father of all life,

you have given us the gift

of the father of our family.

Today we honor him.

His love for us has been a sign of your

divine affection and a sharing of your love.

Bless him this day with your strength and grace

that he may continue to be a sign of your presence

and a priestly parent to our family.

May we who are a part of this family

assist him by our respect, obedience and care.

Bless him, Lord,

with happiness and health, peace and prosperity,

so that we may, with him, live in harmony with all.

Receive into your eternal kingdom all our fathers

who have gone to their rest.

Grant them life forever,

as they gave us life here on this earth.

W e ask this prayer in the name of the Father,

the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

Happy Father’s Day
