Purification and Enlightenment

The period of Purification and Enlightenment is like a six-week retreat for the adults seeking the Sacraments of Baptism,

Confirmation and First Holy Communion a the Easter Vigil. They have been learning about Jesus and the Church and

deepening their awareness of God’s grace and now they are ready to make their final spiritual preparations for their initiation

through prayer, fasting and almsgiving.

This period coincides with Lent which is a time for the entire community to enter into the same spiritual practices. The

entire parish journeys with the elect as together we prepare of the death and resurrection of Christ.

The Scrutinies

During the period of Purification and Enlightenment the Church also celebrates other rituals with the elect, called Scrutinies.

These are prayers of healing prayed by the community (on the third, fourth, and fifth Sundays of Lent) that the elect will

have the strength to withstand evil, and remain pure and free from sin as they journey toward initiation and growth in faith.

While we minister to the elect, they provide a visible reminder to each of us of the meaning and purpose of Lent, and

minister to us through their presence.

Saint John of Kanti

On December 23rd the Church celebrates the Memorial of

St. John of Kanti. Born in Kanti, Poland in 1390, John was

the son of rich landowners. He studied at the University of

Krakow. At the age of twenty-seven, while teaching

philosophy, he began theological studies. In 1424 John was

ordained a priest. He was highly valued as a professor and

preacher, and was a parish priest for a short period of time

in the town of Olkusz. Returning to Krakow, he lived with

austerity, proving himself generous and charitable to the

poor and needy, and teaching these behaviors to his

students. A number of miracles were attributed to him

during his life. St. John of Kanti died on Christmas Eve,

1473 and was canonized in 1767. He is the protector of

seminarians and scholars.

Offertory totals were not available as of press time. They

will be printed in next week’s bulletin.

The budget is based on a weekly average offertory of

$15,942.00 per week.

Thank you for your continued support of our parish.

Reading God’s Word

Reading God’s Word books with daily and Sunday Mass

readings are available at the Parish Office for $15.00 each.

On behalf of the St. John School Family, we would like to

thank everyone who participated in the annual Christmas

fair. It takes lots of hard work and dedication to make the

fair a success.

We extend our heartfelt thanks and appreciation to

everyone, for all that they did; from the workers behind the

scene to the many contributors to all the people who

attended the fair.

The assistance and support of our mission has an immediate

impact on our ability to provide services to families desiring

a Catholic education and we could not do what we do,

without the generous support of the caring community.

Calling all Snowbirds

Before you leave for the winter please contact the Parish

Office with the dates that you plan to be away so we can

THAT MAN IS YOU thanks you! Advent Blessings to the

the leaders, the breakfast chef and his assistants, and the

dish washers!

celebration of the Fourth Sunday of Advent and Christmas

Eve. We, as Catholics, accept the obligation to attend Mass

on Sunday as well as Christmas. This is not a “2 for 1-er”

day on which a person can fulfill the Sunday obligation and

the Christmas obligation at the same Mass.

Parish Masses that will fulfill the Sunday obligation are:

Sat. Evening, Dec. 23: 4:00SJ, 4:00ND, 6:00ND

Sun. Morning, Dec. 24: 7:30SJ, 9:00ND, 10:00SJ, 10:30ND

Parish Masses that will fulfill the Christmas obligation are:

Sun. Evening, Dec. 24: 4:00SJ, 4:00ND, 6:00ND, 10:00SJ

Sun. Morning, Dec. 25: 7:30SJ, 9:00ND

Here is how to create your combination of Masses:

Sat. evening(for Sun.) and Sun. evening(for Christmas)

Sat. evening(for Sun.) and Mon. morning(for Christmas)

Sun. morning(for Sun.) and Sun. evening(for Christmas)

Sun. morning(for Sun.) and Mon. morning(for Christmas)

Prayer for the Third Sunday of Advent

Dear God, you know that our hearts long for the joy and

gladness promised by life with you. Help us to remember

that you are with us always, and that our hearts will rest

only when they rest with you.

Holy Spirit, guide the choices we make throughout this

week. Help us endure hardship. Remind us to be patient.

Stifle our tendency to complain. Help us realize how much

we owe the creator for all we have and all we are.

Father in heaven, we offer thanks to you for sending John

the Baptist to prepare the way for the coming of the savior.

Help us to heed the Baptist’s message to repent and to

renew our commitment to live in holiness.

Come Lord Jesus. So often we are impatient for your

coming, yet we are fearful of living our lives as one with

you. Come and ease our anxiety. Come and reward our

patience. Come and remove our sorrow. Our communities

and our world eagerly await the day of your birth. Amen.

Hannaford’s “Fight Hunger” Bags

The JFK Plaza Hannaford store (Kennedy Memorial Drive),

Waterville, ME has chosen St. John's Food Pantry as the

December recipient of the Hannaford Cause Bag Program

featuring the "Fight Hunger" bag. For every bag sold during

the month of December at this location, Hannaford will

donate $.25 to St. John's Food Pantry. Please consider

purchasing a reusable bag to help both the environment and

the food pantry.

The Advent season is upon us, and at Mount Merici

Academy that means our hearts are especially filled with

the spirit of Serviam. For our service project this season we

have teamed up with Lakewood Continuing Care Center to

adopt residents to bring some extra cheer. Classes have

each selected 2 to 3 tags that have residents’ needs written

on them, and are collecting donations to purchase the items

for the residents. Our goal with this project is to allow our

students to feel the beauty of giving, and to teach them that

there is as much joy in giving as there is in receiving.

Happy Advent season from Mount Merici Academy!
