From The Pastor’s Desk

Dear Parishioners,

This weekend we celebrate the feast of our namesake – Corpus Christi. The Latin phrase means “The Body of Christ.” My predecessor, Fr. Mooney, who founded the parish in 1977, was inspired to name the parish after one the most beautiful mysteries of the Catholic faith. How honorable it is to have a parish named after the Eucharist, Christ’s gift of His Very Self in Holy Communion. Today, we are blessed to have many parishioners participating in Eucharistic adoration dur-ing the weekdays. This is what it means to be a Eucharistic people.

The feast originated in the 13th century. A nun by the name of Sr. Juliana of Liege (Belgium) reportedly had a vision of the Church under the appearance of a full moon. In the full moon, there was one dark spot. Sr. Juliana interpreted this anomaly as signifying the absence of a solemnity in hon-or of the Holy Eucharist. In the year 1208, she had a vision of Christ who also pleaded for a feast in honor of the Eucharist. The vision was repeated for the next 20 years but she kept it a secret. When she eventually relayed it to her confessor, he relayed it to the bishop. The bishop of Liege, in 1246, or-dered that there be a feast called Corpus Christi in the dio-cese each year, on the Thursday after Trinity Sunday. In 1264, Pope Urban IV instituted the Feast of Corpus Christi on the Thursday after Pentecost. However, it would later be moved to the Thursday after Trinity Sunday. The pope would direct a famous Dominican theologian, St. Thomas Aquinas, to create special hymns and prayers for this feast day. It is from St. Thomas that we have two of the most beautiful Eu-charistic hymns – Pange Lingua and Adore Te Devote.

Once the feast was instituted, it became the custom to process with the Blessed Sacrament throughout the streets of the towns and villages with great pomp and circumstanc-es. Within the last 40 or more years, the Feast of Corpus Christi is celebrated on the Sunday following Trinity Sunday. Many parishes celebrate the feast by an outdoor Eucharistic procession. In our diocese, a number of parishes will be hav-ing these processions, one of them being the Cathedral-Basilica after their 11 a.m. mass. Next year, our own parish will have our own Eucharistic procession.

This coming Friday is the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. It is not a holy day of obligation, but a strong remind-er to all that every first Friday of the month is dedicated to the most loving and merciful Heart of Our Savior. We will have special prayers to the Heart of Jesus on this day after the 9 a.m. mass.

SAVE THE DATE: Fr. Mooney’s 50th Priestly Anniversary Celebration. Saturday, June 9th @ Corpus Christi Catholic Church. Mass at 4 p.m. Vigil followed by Dinner Reception in Marian Hall. In order to attend the dinner, you will have to have purchased a ticket. Seating is limited.

And now some funnies:

#1 - Pete and Larry had not seen each other in many years. Now they had a long talk trying to fill in the gap of those years by telling about their lives. Final-ly Pete invited Larry to visit him in his new apartment. "I have a wife and three kids and I'd love to have you visit us." "Great. Where do you live?" "Here's the address. And there's plenty of parking behind the apartment. Park and come around to the front door, kick it open with your foot, go to the elevator and press the button with your left elbow, then enter! When you reach the sixth floor, go down the hall until you see my name on the door. Then press the doorbell with your right elbow and I'll let you in." "Good. But tell me...what is all this business of kicking the front door open, then pressing elevator buttons with my right, then my left elbow?" Pete Answered, "Surely, you're not coming empty-handed."

#2 - In North Ireland a Protestant man married a Catholic woman. After their marriage he decided to covert to the Catholic church. So he went to the priest and took instruc-tions and was later baptized Catholic. He had one problem however. He couldn't get it into his skull that he was a Catholic man, and no longer a Protestant. This became such a problem that he returned to the priest and asked for some advice. The priest told him that if he was to repeat the phrase "I'm a Catholic, not a Protestant" enough times the idea might penetrate his thick skull. The man left mumbling to himself, "I'm a Catholic, not a Protestant. I'm a Catholic, not a Protestant." The next Friday the priest decided to visit the newlyweds. He knocked on the door and was greeted by the wife. When he stepped in, he smelled something that should not be in a Catholic's home on a Friday. He asked the wife where her husband was, and she replied that he was in the kitchen. The priest walked into the kitchen and saw the man pouring thick brown gravy on a thick hunk of roast beef. Aghast, the priest was about to explode when he heard the man mumble, "You're a trout, not a cow. You're a trout, not a cow."

DIVINE MERCY CORNER

I desire to unite Myself with human souls. Know, My daughter, that when I come to a human heart in Holy communion My hands are full of all kind of graces which I want to give to the soul. But souls do not even pay any attention to Me; they leave Me to Myself and busy themselves with other things. Oh how sad I am that souls so not recognize Love! They treat me as a dead object (1385) I have remained on earth to comfort your aching heart and to fortify your soul, so that you will not falter on the way (1487)
