We aim for a keen awareness of compliance
The Business Dev elopment & Legal Unit is in charge of launching new v entures
and putting the necessary contracts in place. What we watch out f or in terms
of CSR in conducting our duties is corruption such as the bribery of f oreign
civ il serv ants. The INPEX Group nev er pay s cash to f oreign civ il serv ants or
engages in other misconduct in hopes of securing oil rights, but sometimes
when we take ov er partial interests f rom other companies we hav e them
include guarantees in the Interest Transf er Agreements that state they did not
of f er bribes to secure the initial interests. As competition to secure oil and
natural gas resources grows increasingly intense, there is a strong demand
internationally f or companies to possess a keen awareness of compliance to
ensure that the processes f or acquiring new interests are transparent and that
corruption or other misconduct does not occur. The companies in the INPEX
Group maintain a constant awareness of this in their daily routines.

We value safe operations and relationships with local
communities
In the Moruy Project that I ov ersee, we are exploring f ields of f the coast of
Venezuela, and at the end of last y ear we drilled an exploration well.* We giv e
particular consideration to the local communities and env ironment when we drill.
In the env ironmental impact study we conducted bef ore drilling, we examined
env ironmental f actors such as water quality and ecosy stems as well as
f actors pertaining to local industries and the liv elihoods of local residents. In
accordance with this, we draf ted a drilling plan based on the assumption that we
would use materials and equipment and f ollow standard procedures with low
env ironmental impact. This plan also included marine pollution countermeasures
and a contingency plan in case of an oil leak. We submitted this plan to
Venezuela’s Ministry of Env ironment and Natural Resources and Ministry of
Energy and Petroleum to receiv e permission to drill. We also hold inf ormation
sessions with local gov ernments, f ishermen, and other local groups to seek
their understanding and cooperation as we striv e to engage in saf e operations.

We aim for energy efficiency and low environmental
impact
I am primarily inv olv ed in engineering f or plant enhancements at our main gas
f ield in Minami Nagaoka (Nagaoka City, Niigata Pref ecture). We activ ely adopt
new technologies to promote projects that are energy ef f icient and hav e low
env ironmental impact. For example, we are currently considering the
installation of a large-scale compressor f or this project. Instead of running this
compressor with a gas turbine, we will use a motor and an inv erter controller in
an ef f ort to increase ef f iciency and reduce energy consumption and CO2
emissions. Going f orward, I hope to accumulate experience and apply the
operational capacity we dev elop in Japan to operator projects ov erseas.

Crude oil produced in Japan is transported by oil tankers and tanker
trucks to our refineries, where it is refined into petroleum products
such as naphtha, kerosene, heavy oil, and l iquefied petroleum gas
(LPG, composed mostly of propane and butane), which are then sold
and shipped to customers by oil tankers and tanker trucks
Crude oil produced outside Japan is sold and shipped by oil tankers
or via pipelines to refineries and/or trading companies for refining, to
power companies for use in thermal power plants, and to
petrochemical companies for the manufacture of chemical products
Exchange of crude oil with other international oi l companies to meet

We strive to provide a steady supply of natural gas and
engage in product control
I am a plant operator at the Nagaoka Field Of f ice where we produce natural gas
f rom three plants: Koshijihara, Oy azawa, and Sekihara (the last plant is made
operational depending on demand). Two important jobs in operating a production
plant are prov iding a steady supply of gas and product control.
Plant capacity f luctuates f rom day to day, and it is our duty to make sure we
do not ov erlook any malf unctioning parts and do not make mistakes due to
lack of know-how or experience. We do our best to av oid mishaps by utilizing
the operator manual, work process manual, saf ety control standards manual,
and other resources.
We are alway s considering more ef f icient operating methods and we employ
