Message from the Skipper
It fills me with immense pleasure and pride to bring to you the inaugural quarterly Newsletter of Corporate
Projects. This Newsletter provides us the platform to highlight various developments and share the
contributions of our colleagues in Corporate Projects Team towards the progress of our organization.
As Corporate Projects is now located at multiple locations across different geographies, this Newsletter
would help us to share the success stories of our people who are adding value to our organization. This
newsletter is a means to bring our colleagues across various functions and verticals closer by recognizing
their initiatives and achievements and sharing their thoughts and hobbies for everyone to see.
I was very happy to note that the Editorial Team has decided that every edition of our newsletter will be
based on a theme. In this very first issue, they have taken Safety, as the theme.
We in Corporate Projects strongly believe that promoting Safety at workplace as well as outside is the
need of the hour. It is also my personal objective to increase awareness and knowledge of our employees
and sensitize them to make Tata Power a Safe organization. So I request each and every member of the
Corporate Projects Family to follow all the safety guidelines and stop any unsafe practices occurring in
your presence or command. It is the responsibility of all to maintain a safe and healthy work atmosphere.
I look forward to your critical observations to make this Newsletter achieve its purpose and improve
continuously.
Thank you.
Asim Thakurta,
Chief- Corporate Projects

Safety Comes First By Mr. Purushottam Thakur
On 28th November 2012, at 10:20 am, a Hydra toppled
with load while shifting the built-up beam. The load
beam was 3.387 MT whereas the rated capacity of the
hydra’s hook was 1.5 MT. It was carrying the load with
the extended Telescopic boom. Immediately after the
incident the power supply of the area was isolated
because of spilling diesel from hydra would have led
to fire hazard.
After the investigation the following conclusions were
drawn:
Physical Factor: Bad Surface Conditions.
Human Factors: Casual Approach of Operator/
Rigger and Wrong Selection of hook.
System Factors: Hydra was owned by local who
forced it in the site. Due to which no standard
procedure followed for the same at site.
Solution: Traditional Hydra was replaced
with Hydraulic Mobile Crane.
Benefits:
Front mounted cabin with steering
wheel for better visibility and constant
precision handling.
Slotted Boom with self-compensating
snatch block.
Optimized geometry for enhanced
stability and control.
Optional features like Dragging Winch
with Outriggers, Safe Load Indicators.
Recommendations made to avoid any such
future incidents were:
Surfaces should be levelled, dressed and compacted for material movement using hydra.
Material handling should be done using proper lifting arrangement.
New and better material handling equipment should be used.

Know Your Manager! Name: Mr. Vijaya Kumar Nori
Date of Birth: 11 October 1964
Present Role: Head – Project Development
Native Place: Guntur, Andhra Pradesh
Qualifications: Civil Engineer
Tell us something about yourself?
I married my Childhood Love Padma. She has a
Masters in English Literature. She used to work
with State Govt. (Andhra Pradesh) and now she is
a homemaker. We have 2 sons. My elder son,
Abhijit is in final year, pursuing Bsc (Hons.) in
Animations from BIT, MESRA (Noida). My
younger son, Anirudh, is in his 2nd year of
Mechanical Engineering from Amity University.
What's the hardest thing for you under your
current role? How do you address that?
We, Tata Power, as a company have been
aggressive and positive about ourselves. We are
the confident people. But, nowadays I feel people
have become apprehensive regarding success in
their work. So, the challenge would be to bring
back that atmosphere of confidence, faith in
ourselves.
To bring about a shift, I feel that we need to pluck
those low hanging fruits. We need to imbibe
winning in our day to day life; have a 3 point
target: set it, plan it, and then achieve it.
Best compliment you've ever received.
My Japanese Boss used to say, and I quote, “If
you are there, it will happen.”
What are your hobbies?
I love to indulge myself in sports, travelling,
writing Telugu Literature particularly Poetry,
Dancing, Acting, Art of Living. I also like to do
Sudarshan Kriya.
Where have you travelled?
I am an avid traveller. I have extensively
travelled Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra
Pradesh, Odisha, West Bengal. There are
mysterious places like Konkan in Maharashtra
with its tidal range; Godavari District in Andhra
Pradesh amazes you and you get to know why it
called the rice bowl of India.
What's the most embarrassing story about
yourself?
In college, I used to be a plump guy. I was
selected for U-15 District Cricket Team as a
wicketkeeper and opening batsman. Once,
when I was keeping behind the wickets, my
trousers got parted. The embarrassment had a
deep rooted effect and I still carry a spare
trouser.
Any misconceptions people have about you
I am Rich and Rude.
Message to the young Engineers?
When you aim, aim high; aim for the stars; keep
a target that is unachievable; only we are
responsible for keeping ourselves to the limits.
So, break free; fight! Fight till the last; Be Sport
whatever be the results.

Travelogue- Gangtok By Mr. Aditya Verma
It was April end and that was the time for appraisal
results, we (me, Nandish & Anit) decided to
celebrate or release our frustration at Gangtok.
Gangtok is located in the Shivalik Hills of the
eastern Himalayan Range. Surrounded by many
peaks of the Himalayas, Gangtok is a major
pilgrimage centre for Buddhists. Many monasteries,
small and big, dot Gangtok and the State of Sikkim.
We had 4 days with us to explore the city. Our
journey started from Jajpur. We reached Howrah on
the same day and we had to board our next train to
New Jalpaiguri (NJP).
We had pre booked a cab for travelling to Gangtok,
which was 120kms away. The journey was breath-
taking with superb scenic views throughout. We had
our breakfast at Sevoke. Due to the terrain it took
us 5 hours to reach Gangtok at 3 pm.
We had booked a room in our company’s Holiday
Home, Hotel Mayur. The weather was cloudy & it
was drizzling, which made us realise to buy an
umbrella.
Next morning we took breakfast at hotel & left for
the famous Tsomgo Lake, locally known as Changu
Lake, about 50 kms from Gangtok. As we ascended
towards our destination, the view was stupendous
but due to the cloudy weather we were not able to
enjoy the view completely.
Finally we reached Changu Lake. We were left
mesmerized by immense snow-capped mountains
surrounding the frozen lake. Without wasting any
time we got shoes & gloves on rent. We enjoyed a
lot, played with snow, slid all the snowy way. This
experience was truly amazing.
Next day we booked a cab for local site seeing
which included Tashi View Point, Ganesh Tok,
Bakthang Falls, Himalayan Zoo, Monastries &
Cable Car.
Finally, we started for our return journey & reached
Jajpur.
