The BusinessThe Business

Clipsal Datacomms is a truly global operation. After inception, the business rapidly gained recognition in Australia and New Zealand before expanding into Asia, following in the footsteps of the enormously successful Clipsal Electrical Accessories brand. The Clipsal name was immediately recognisable and respected, even in traditionally competitive markets such as Hong Kong, China and Malaysia.

Asia’s renowned fascination with high tech, innovative products gave our business access to new levels of expertise and Clipsal Datacomms’ range quickly developed into one of the most comprehensive in the world.

In late 1999, a steering committee, comprising the company’s Marketing, Sales, Training and Support, Engineering and Manufacturing Managers, was

established to ensure that each area receives the focus it requires to consolidate Clipsal Datacomms as a world leader in voice and data communications solutions.

With the establishment of key offices in Malaysia and Hong Kong, the business steadily advanced into lucrative markets including India, Indonesia, Korea, Pakistan, the Middle East, South Africa and the United Kingdom. This worldwide expansion has provided Clipsal Datacomms with a diverse resource base providing feedback and ideas for future product development.

In December 2003, Schneider Electric acquired the Clipsal brand, providing an excellent platform for increasing market share in the Asia-Pacific region. The association with Schneider Electric’s VDI division

provides Clipsal Datacomms with a vast foundation of research, development, manufacturing and marketing expertise in the European region.

Clipsal Datacomms now have the capability to draw upon the versatility of business units stretched across the globe, with each unit working towards the common goal of innovation in data communications product design. Clipsal Datacomms offer a Lifetime Warranty on all products when installed by Clipsal Endorsed Installers or Endorsed Partners. With such an extensive product range, customers can rest assured that their voice and data communications networks are secured by the global backing of an industry-leading product and solutions guarantee.

Research & DevelopmentClipsal R & D - Expanding the Range of Opportunity

The recognised market leader in electro-mechanical design, Clipsal’s innovative Research and Development Department is not one to rest on it’s laurels. As soon as one new product is released, it’s back to the drawing board to find new solutions for a complex market that is becoming increasingly interdependent.

The convergence of technology across the electrical/electronic/telecommunications industries has lead to Clipsal’s R&D centre establishing a suite of processes and technologies which provide the opportunity to challenge conventional thinking.

In order to maintain its market position, Clipsal relies heavily on innovation to drive its business forward against an increasing number of low cost entrants.

The core development team - incorporating Industrial Design, Electrical, Electronic, Environmental and Mechanical Engineers supported by various specialists in materials, quality, and Project Management - has a cumulative knowledge base to rival that of any organisation.

In house Rapid Prototyping, Manufacturing, Testing and Approval facilities provide a seamless end-to-end development process. The extensive virtual technology tool kit ensures the creation of quality products that meet and exceed standards.

The Virtual Technology Tool Kit

• 3D CAD Modelling: The cornerstone of the tool kit in providing fully parametric (interlinked development properties) virtual models means that developments can be synthesised, tested and updated in real-time.

• CAE (Computer Assisted Engineering): General analysis and virtual testing of the characteristics of the elements of a design, both in static and simulated application.

• Rapid Prototyping: Using a full suite of state of the art technologies, Clipsal’s products can be created in a robust format for market review, distribution and testing before the final design is produced.

All Ergonomic and spatial criteria can be experienced - eliminating the unknowns early in the process. Rapid Prototyping ensures the product is bug free for market day one.

• Photorealistic Visualisation and Animation: In taking the CAD produced model and importing into a graphics package such as 3D Studio Max, full assessment of colour schemes, materials and textures can be achieved both for the product itself and its intended application.

The virtual tool kit is supported by direct contact with all levels of industry - customers, suppliers, regulatory/certification authorities and industry bodies, to ensure the best outcome for the application. In-house pre-compliance and post-release evaluation follows this rigorous review procedure, maintaining the product outcomes at release and well into the future.

ManufacturingManufacturing

Clipsal manufacturing is the product of more than eighty years of experience. In many respects, Clipsal pioneered many developments in Australian manufacturing – particularly in the early days of thermoplastic moulding, metals tooling, assembly and product design.

With the expansion of the company, it developed in width, with a standard product offering of over 30,000 items, and developed in depth with vertical integration in manufacturing which extended from in-house packaging and printing, fastener manufacturing, total metal fabrication, moulding and finished goods assembly.

The advent of globalisation has brought opportunities (and challenges) to manufacturing generally and

for Clipsal, it has meant that today the supplier community is broader based and often the source of competitive advantage in cost, quality and service previously unimagined. Purchasing is now more critical to any business than at any time before. The concept of buyers and order books has been replaced by teams of professionals in procurement and quality management working and partnering with suppliers to deliver maximum value from their relationship through better information sharing and integration of objectives.

The supply of services to the business is also developing in the same way. Technology developments in manufacturing are monitored carefully by manufacturing and product engineering departments to ensure developments utilise those

advances that can deliver competitive advantage. This includes co-injection moulding – delivering integral soft gaskets to moulding, Mucell gas injection moulding, reducing material content in hidden components without sacrificing performance characteristics and the use of robotics and automation in assembly.

Capacity for future growth is assured through the deployment of lean manufacturing techniques within the manufacturing and internal logistics processes of the Clipsal factories. As well as achieving additional capacity, facilities are more flexible and service levels improve as shortened production lead times and visual management systems engage the workforce to strive for customer satisfaction.

Marketing to the WorldMarketing to the World

Clipsal Datacomms is backed by a global marketing team, with major stakeholders based in Australia, Hong Kong and Malaysia. Each regional team contributes to the business’ commitment of ensuring that our sales force - and consequently our customers - are well informed of the depth of our product portfolio and the new additions that are constantly introduced to market.

Markets are segmented to ensure the most effective and efficient methods of communication are employed. All of our customers have different expectations and a demand for readily available product information – from contractors and distributors through to consultants and end users.

A specialist sales force handles the day-to-day marketing to these segments, supported by a comprehensive range of product brochures, technical data catalogues and electronic sales tools. Clipsal has created a range of CD-based software programs to assist customers in the planning process. Future innovations will provide customers with a wealth of easily accessible information that will aid in producing project designs using the extensive range of Clipsal products.

Given the critical role marketing plays in Clipsal’s business strategy, the majority of marketing literature is designed and created by our own in-house Advertising Department. As a dedicated supporter

of young talent, the department has recruited many of its employees from tertiary education colleges and universities. The result is a highly creative and fresh team possessing an excellent work ethic.

The Advertising Team has an extremely close relationship with the Display and Merchandising Department who design and build the displays for the many conferences, trade shows and exhibitions that Clipsal attend and convene worldwide. The Department is also responsible for the creation of the displays used in wholesaler and distributor stores, ensuring that consistency and brand awareness are maximised through effective point-of-sale marketing.

Brisbane Magistrates CourtCase Study One - Magistrates Court, Brisbane

Brisbane’s new Magistrates Court complex is set to become a major landmark for the city and an important milestone in the Queensland Government’s investment in the state’s legal system. Featuring state-of-the-art design, the 10 storey building is endowed with some of the best communications facilities of any magistrates courthouse in Australia.

Special facilities to assist people with disabilities will be integrated throughout the building, and selected courtrooms will be equipped to enable evidence to be taken by video from remote centres and protected areas within the building. To maximise efficiency of the building’s administration, the complex will also utilise computer generated information displays and electronic queuing systems.

The complex’s high-tech electronic courtrooms will feature sound reinforcement, hearing aid induction loops, a/v playback, document and image display and telephone and video conferencing systems. The enormous volume of voice and data communication and the high bandwidth required for video would command a high-tech Cat 6 network.

The completed infrastructure included approximately 2,000 data outlets required over 10 floors and over 146 kilometres of Professional Series Cat 6 cable. Running from a communications room on each floor, cables were then run through the roof along cable trays, concealed in the ceiling space.

Fibre optic cable was also required to facilitate seamless network access to the existing State Law Building. Racks and patch panels are located within a total of 22 Clipsal Datacomms cabinets split between the communications rooms on each floor. To accommodate the number of network points to be patched, 150 x 24 port ethernet switches were used.

The installation has also successfully completed its certification to qualify for Clipsal Datacomms’ Lifetime Warranty. The warranty program was confirmed by independent test verification and covers LAN structured cabling, pathways and spaces, cabinets, frames and more.

Chonghuan PlazaCase Study Two - Chonghuan Plaza, Beijing

Exceptional performance, contemporary design, unrivalled functionality and an industry-leading Lifetime Warranty were the criteria for Clipsal Datacomms’ success in securing this prime endeavour in Beijing. Using the acclaimed Clipsal Titanium®

selection of structured cabling products, the project at Chonghuan Plaza incorporates approximately 10,000 data points.

As a landmark building in the city, Chonghuan Plaza is not only the hub for many Beijing authorities, is also serves as the headquarters for the Beijing Organizing Committee for the 2008 Olympics and many other multinational corporations. The Beijing Information Office entrusted this structured cabling project to the Clipsal Titanium® range of products, ensuring that the portfolio met with the strict requirements as set out in the project specifications. The data communications infrastructure serves as a catalyst for the Beijing Authority to step up its venture in promoting

information technology. Clipsal Datacomms’ success in this tender is testimony to our commitment to supply innovative products to market.

Occupying a geographical space of 20,000 square metres, Chonghuan Plaza is located on the Beijing Western Round Road. The total construction area equates to a massive 140,000 square metres, divided between the North and South sections. The Northern Building encompasses a total expanse of 90,000 square metres and provides the real estate for some of the Beijing Government’s most prominent departments.

Overall, 9,800 data outlets were installed throughout the project with 3,800 for the main data network, 3,000 reserve data points with the remaining 3,000 points used exclusively for telephone services. The data backbone infrastructure utilizes a 10Gig fibre solution in conjunction with Category 3 backbone cabling for the voice network. The corresponding horizontal

cabling employs a Clipsal Titanium® Category 6+ solution for all data services along with a Category 5e system for the telephone network. CMR standard fireproof cabling has been installed throughout the project. The Main Distribution Frame integrates a Category 6 voice communication system, data network solution and KVM network security structure encompassing a total of 450 points and 150 patch panels.
