■ Continuous, Innovative Reforms
The history of the Teijin Group is one of continuous reforms and challenges. This can be traced back to our establishment in 1918 as the first manufacturer of rayon yarn in Japan, and then later as we overcame many difficulties to convert to a synthetic fibers manufacturer. Through cutting-edge R&D and chemical technologies developed in step with the progress of the times, we have subsequently continued endeavors to further expand our business, advance into new fields and become a more global company. This continues today as we expand globally in a wide range of businesses including advanced fibers & composites, electric materials & performance polymer products, healthcare, products converting, and IT.
■ Our Decisive Vision
There are a range of predictions being made about the future of the international community—explosive population growth, food and water resource shortages, heightened demand for fossil fuel resources and increased CO2 emissions accompanying the economic growth in emerging countries, and dramatic increases in the cost of medical care and social-security burden due to the further progression of aging societies. To respond to these social and environmental changes, the Teijin Group is focusing efforts on technological innovations in Green Chemistry, Healthcare, and overlapping domains. As we focus on these business domains, we continue striving to enhance the quality of life of people everywhere through provision of value in the form of greater energy/resource efficiency, environmental conservation, increased well-being and material affluence, better safety/disaster prevention, and health/comfort. The Teijin Group will also provide solutions to meet market and customer needs in five key fields: sustainable transportation, information and electronics, safety and protection, environment and energy, and healthcare. In these ways, we are working hard to realize sustainable corporate growth.
■ Endeavors of the Teijin Group
The Teijin Group is aiming to attain global excellence; that is, become a company with a strong global presence. To achieve this goal, there are many challenges that must be faced. However, united as a group, we will demonstrate our overall strength as “One Teijin” and make continuing efforts towards reaching our ideal state.

In the new healthcare field, we have been integrating materials technologies, such as bioabsorbable polymers, nanomaterial processing and micro-forming, with healthcare technologies, such as cellular engineering, protein engineering, pharmaceutical formulation design and medical equipment design. In these ways, we are aiming for early entry into fields including materials for regenerative medicine, scaffolds for tissue repair, drug delivery system (DDS) materials, medical equipment materials and sports medicine.

The Teijin Group is aiming to become a company with a strong global presence, or put in other words, to attain global excellence. We are striving to ensure sustainable growth in corporate value by strengthening corporate governance and corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities as key points of corporate management.
Advisory Board
The Advisory Board is a consultative body to the Board of Directors. It is comprised of five to seven Japanese and non-Japanese outside experts, the chairman or a senior advisor, and the CEO of Teijin Limited. Its role is to give advice/make proposals regarding corporate strategy and results, and function as the Nomination and Compensa-tion Committee in deliberating on matters such as a change of CEO and the successor, and the performance evaluation and standards of remunera-tion for directors.
The Teijin Group realizes that its basic mission as a company is to ensure sustainable growth in shareholder value. On this basis, in order to fulfill our responsibilities to other various stakeholders, we are striving to strengthen corporate governance. We have implemented a series of groundbreaking management reforms relating to basic elements of corporate governance with the aim of enhancing transparency, ensuring fairness and objectivity, and accelerating decision-making. These reforms include establishing the Advisory Board, a system for appointing independent outside directors, and separating frontline management and monitoring/auditing functions. Together with these reforms, the Teijin Group Corporate Governance Guide was published to specify guidelines regarding corporate governance.
The Teijin Group comprehensively manages/controls compliance and risk management, both of which are essential for effective internal control. In compliance, we believe it is important that all directors, officers and employees act with integrity based on the ethics and values requested of members of the enterprise and society. To ensure this, we have formulated the Corporate Code of Conduct, the Corporate Standards of Conduct, and the Regulations for Teijin Group Corporate Ethics, and we are promoting greater group-wide awareness of these policies through training and education at all workplaces. In risk management, we believe it is essential that the various risks and uncertainties faced by the whole Teijin Group be dealt
with through comprehensive and efficient assessment/management of the risk. We have introduced the Total Risk Management (TRM) Committee alongside the Board of Directors to accelerate group-wide decision-making that effectively counters business operating and management strategy risk that may arise. Additionally, we are promoting establishment of business continuity plans so that we can protect ourselves from loss of corporate value in emergencies, such as accidents and disasters, by preventing interruption of our business activities or by quickly restoring the activities if interrupted.

The Teijin Scholarship
Mr. Seita Kumura
The Teijin Group is involved in a wide range of academic/cultural promotion activities. One of these is the Teijin Kumura Scholarship of the Teijin Scholarship Foundation. This scholarship is named after Mr. Seita Kumura, one of the Teijin founders who is known as the pioneer of chemical fiber industry in Japan. Established in 1953 to promote science and technology and foster young scientists and engineers, the scholarship has supported approximately 1,500 students over a period of 60 years.
The Teijin Group implements systematic, well-planned corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities on the basis of its basic CSR policy. CSR issues such as compliance/risk management, environment, safety and health (ESH), product liability/quality assurance, human resource management, procurement, and social contribution activities are divided into three categories: basic, expansive and selective. Short and medium- to long-term targets are set for each of these categories, the responsible organizations are clarified, and effective activities aimed at reaching these targets are developed. The Teijin Group’s CSR management has an excellent reputation internationally, as evidenced by Teijin being listed on key global socially responsible investment (SRI) indexes.
■ CSR Management Sustainable Environment Initiatives ■ In Harmony with SocietyThe Teijin Group conducts various social contribution activities as a good corporate citizen, aiming to work together with the community. For activities common across the Group, we are developing a group-wide social contribution program that places particular emphasis on three areas: environment, international exchange and social education. Furthermore, to support and promote the volunteer activities of employees, we have introduced the Volunteer Support Program, a system that allows employees to take leave from work to volunteer, as well as systems designed to enable employees to become registered bone marrow donors or volunteer firefighters. Individual factories, research facilities and Group companies also take the initiative in developing original corporate citizenship activities matched to the regional and business characteristics, including the promotion of sports, clean-up activities and environmental education.
The Teijin Group is promoting sustainable environmental initiatives from three core elements: environmental conservation, design for environment and environmental business. In environmental conservation, we have set ambitious long-term group-wide targets for reducing CO2 and chemical substance emissions, and unusable industrial waste, and are striving to ensure these targets are reached. In design for environment, based on original guidelines, we consider various measures for reducing negative environmental impact and incorporate the results of this review into the design of manufacturing processes, products, information technologies and services. In environmental business, we are focusing efforts on developing cutting-edge materials and technologies, and promoting the further widespread use of products that contribute to reducing CO2 and realize cyclic use of resources/water.
