About UsWithout a doubt the late Joseph EdgarBergasse was a business visionary.

Imagine establishing little more than aretail storefront, offering fabric andsome clothing, which was destined tobecome a cornerstone of businessdevelopment in Saint Lucia and anoutlet for a myriad of household namesincluding Heineken, Johnnie Walker,Xerox and IBM to name but a few.

It was in the early 1950s when Joseph(then in his seventies) sent hisyoungest son, Peter, to the UnitedKingdom to study insurance. Wherebetter to further on-the-job trainingthan with the Guardian RoyalExchange Assurance Company, abastion of professionalism and world-class standards.

On Peter’s return to Saint Lucia, theInsurance Department of J.E. Bergassewas born. Steeped in those traditionswhich had made the Guardian RoyalExchange a trusted name, it was nosurprise that through following theserigorous standards the new divisionflourished and has continued to growto the present day.

Another individual who joined thecompany back in 1959, who has andcontinues to leave his mark, is HollisBristol. Hollis’specialty back then wasraising additional capital andidentifying key human resources forthe growing company needs. Today,Hollis is instrumental in drivingrevenue at Agostini Insurance Brokers(St. Lucia) Ltd., one of the members ofthe group of companies. He also holdsthe position of Group Chairman.

Throughout the sixties and seventies, brands including Heineken, JohnnieWalker, and Xerox were added toJ.E.Bergasse and Company Ltd.’salready impressive vendor partner list. But the best was yet to come. With thedawn of the eighties came the personalcomputer and the company secured thedistribution rights to IBM.

As with any company that can trace itsroots back fifty years, there have beenchallenges and adversities along theway. Perhaps the biggest challenge camein July 1984 when Windward andLeeward Brewery, brewers of Heinekenunder license, decided to change theirdistribution model. At the time, distribution of Heineken accounted for56% of the company’s overall revenueand its loss very nearly caused thedemise of the company.

J.E. Bergasse and Company Ltd.struggled through the eighties and earlynineties but a change in focus saw thecompany exit wholesaling anddistribution of food, alcohol andtobacco products. The company shiftedits core focus to Office Technology andthis brought about a change in fortune.J. E. Bergasse and Co. Ltd. has becomea ‘Single Source Provider’of technologyand office products for today’s moderntechnological workplace, where thecompany is already considered the clearleader in the marketplace.

As the old saying goes: “There is nothingso powerful as an idea whosetime has come.” The idea was to be a“Single Source Provider,” and the timewas right... right now!

Today, the workforce comprises 96 staffacross the group. Giving the companydirection and the benefit of hands-onexperience are the Board of Directors:

• Hollis D. D. Bristol - Chairman•Anthony M. Bergasse - ManagingDirector

• Gerard P. Bergasse - Director• Mark Waters - Director

Corporate Social ResponsibilitySupporting you... with community programs

designed to empower our youth.

Thank you for the opportunity to presentthe J. E. Bergasse Corporate SocialResponsibility Programme, YES! YouthEmpowered to Shine.

Social responsibility has been ingrainedin the J. E. Bergasse culture since ourearliest days as a company, largelybecause my father, Peter, and his businesspartner, Hollis Bristol, have always beenstrong advocates of corporate citizenship.Good citizenship in my view is, quitesimply, good business, and we take greatcare to balance a generous spirit with wisestewardship of J. E. Bergasse resources.

One of the points in our mission statementcommits us to:

“Be a model corporate ci t izencontributing to the development of ourcountry”

We live and earn our livelihood in St.Lucia, a small and developing country. We believe that every company has a civicduty to play its part in helping withdevelopment, each according to itsmeans.

Over the years, J.E. Bergasse contributedin an informal manner to a number ofgroups, organizations, schools &

Our support has also taken the form ofdonations over the years. Here are but afew of them:

annual Scrap Book Project.

Times are challenging, our economies arenot exactly robust and the outlook isanemic at best, but now is not the time toretreat into our shells. We're in an age ofsustainable and responsible business. If itdoes one thing, it will show whichcompanies are genuinely committed toethical, responsible business; it's aboutactually having a business in 20 yearstime. Corporate Social Responsibilitywill survive, because the big issues thatdrive companies' social, environmentaland ethical policies are not going away. So, if we believe that doing our bit totackle these important issues is the rightthing to do, we have to stick to ourprinciples.

Our intent is to constantly lead withinnovative technologies, products, solutions and service that our customerscan depend upon to improve theirbusiness results. We also know, none ofthis can happen, or can continue tohappen, without the support of ourcustomers.

Fortunes will ebb and flow, but no matterhow we assess our own situation, there arealways those who need our help.

individuals as part of our communityoutreach programme. However, we recognized that moreneeded to be done, and that we could domore, and so we consulted with a localmarketing company to assist us inachieving this. The essence of the programme includesdonations of equipment, product, service, mentoring and other resources to schoolsand organizations focused on youthdevelopment & training. Our educationand social service efforts reflect our beliefthat a successful corporation must be anactive participant in society. While wehave always placed emphasis oneducation our focus is on the youth ofSaint Lucia, who have always had aspecial place in our hearts because theyrepresent the future.

Hence the branding of the corporatesocial responsibility programme, as YES!“Youth Empowered to Shine”.

Some of the ways we have helped, andcontinue to help, is by employing summerinterns, providing deeply discountedpricing on products and services tostudents, teachers and schools, promotingand funding members of our staff inpursuit of undergraduate degrees andprofessional designation programmes.
