In the age of Net Centric Warfare, in which wars are fought in cyberspace, in addition to ground, air and

sea, the Department of Defense is tasked with the challenge of delivering integrated capabilities to the

warfighter, in a secure manner, faster and cheaper. More importantly, it is the integration of those capabilities

and resources, more than the delivery that is critical to mission success. To that end the Department of

Defense Architecture Framework (DoDAF) was mandated by the Office of the DoD CIO to institute the use of

architecture in the design and acquisition of integrated capabilities.

The ChallengeAs a result of the release of DoDAF Version 2.0, DoD programs are presented new challenges:

Conformance to the DM2 - The DoDAF directive states very clearly that data in an architecture repository

must conform to DM2. However, the DM2 is a significant shift in metamodel terminology and the way in which

DoD architecture data is structured. A great deal of time and effort will be required to understand the DM2

and how to structure traditional DoDAF information.

Migration to DoDAF 2.0 Viewpoints and Models - DoDAF 2.0 introduces new and modified Viewpoints

and Models, defined as “templates for collecting information”, which enable the capture of a broader set of

information about the architecture. The challenge for the DoDAF architect is in understanding the new models

and how to use them and, more importantly, how to leverage and integrate the new models defined in DoDAF

2.0 and continue the proven approaches of DoDAF 1.x.

Development of “Fit-for-Purpose” - The introduction of Fit-for-Purpose views provides the means to present

architecture models to non-architects for decision support and analysis. However, little guidance

or instruction has been provided on exactly what this means and how it should be implemented.

Conversion of Existing DoDAF 1.x Architectures - For almost a decade, significant time and money has

gone into the development of DoD architectures following the C4ISR and DoDAF versions 1.0 and 1.5.

As a result there are large architecture datasets that need to be converted to the new standard. This will

be a major undertaking in many cases.

The SolutionCasewise Corporate Modeler for DoDAF 2.0 (CMD2)

provides the first comprehensive software solution

designed specifically to expedite the conversion to

and compliance with DoDAF 2.0. CMD2 offers a rich

set of out-of-the-box capabilities that will enable DoD

programs and organizations to:

• ConformtoDM2

• ConvertDoDAF1.xdatatoDoDAF2.0

• DevelopandpresentFit-for-PurposeViews

Key Functional Features

DM2 Conformance - CMD2 is built upon a metamodel that aligns with the DM2. We at Casewise have

become students of the DM2 – what the structures are, how they are to be implemented, etc. We have

built that knowledge into CMD2. As such, the architecture information and associations captured and defined

by the architect when using CMD2 automatically align with the DM2, giving the program automatic DM2

conformance.

Conversion of DoDAF 1.x to DoDAF 2.0 - Corporate Modeler can easily import and convert data from

external sources. As such, CMD2 has the ability to import data from existing DoDAF 1.x architecture

repositories and convert the data from outdated legacy data structures to the new DM2 conformant

repository. In addition, the Corporate Modeler Suite includes AutoModeler, which offers the ability to auto-

generate diagrams, significantly decreasing the time to convert DoDAF 1.5 architectures to DoDAF 2.0.

Bottom LineTactical warfighter missions may be at risk (or not fully optimized) as information may be dated •

or not shared.

DoD organizations and programs are going to waste time and money, and risk not having their •

programs funded, if they do not have a way to quickly and easily support DoDAF 2.0.

Page 3: Corporate Modeler for DoDAF2 - Sandhill Consultants … of Existing DoDAF 1.x Architectures - For almost a decade, significant time and money has gone into the development of DoD architectures

Decision Support Fit-For-Purpose Views - CMD2 provides numerous out-of-the-box capabilities, such

as dashboard views, data-driven visual indicators, and model integration to support “fusion” and “hybrid”

views. This enables the architect to develop views that are fit for the purpose of the decision maker and/or

consuming analyst, based on their unique needs and requirements.

DoDAF 2.0 Viewpoints and Models - CMD2 provides full support for the new and modified DoDAF 2.0

Viewpoints and Models. Casewise has painstakingly gone through each of the models defined in DoDAF 2.0

and have analyzed how these models have traditionally been used in legacy DoDAF architectures, how they

are intended to be used in DoDAF 2.0, and how they map to the DM2 (metamodel). As a result, we have

produced a set of best practice templates for each of the DoDAF 2.0 models that can be further customized

or configured to meet the “fit-for-purpose” needs of your organization.

Leveraging the Casewise Corporate Modeler Business Transformation Platform

CMD2 is a specialized offering of Casewise Corporate Modeler - explicitly designed for those DoD

organizations required to move to DoDAF 2.0. As such, the power of the Corporate Modeler Suite is also

at your fingertips:

Web-based Collaboration - The Corporate Modeler Suite includes numerous web-enabled capabilities to

promote collaboration and integration of distributed participants. CM Portal provides real-time, web-based

access to the architecture repository, with both read-only and read-write access. Web Modeler enables the

creation and modification of diagrams over the web. In addition, Corporate Modeler can be integrated with

MS SharePoint to provide real time access to architecture models and information, for those organizations

that have a heavy investment in that web environment.

Visio for DoDAF - The Corporate Modeler Suite includes V-Modeler, which is a real-time interface between

Visio and Corporate Modeler. What this means to the DoDAF community is that all of the model templates

defined in CMD2 can be rendered as a standard to the Visio modeling environment, enabling Visio users to

develop DoDAF 2.0 conformant models and integrate into the DM2 conformant repository.

Federated Architecture and Cross-Program Analysis - Corporate Modeler Intelligence (CMI) offers a data

integration environment, whereby analysis can be performed across a federation of multiple architectures,

be it cross-organization, cross-program, etc. CMI provides a business intelligence environment that

integrates Business Intelligence tools with all the data captured in the architecture repository, enabling

critical data analysis across a federated view.

Save Time and Money

• Achieve DM2 conformance

• Short-circuit the

implementation of new and

modified DoDAF 2.0 models

• Realize maximum reuse

of existing architectures

• Auto-generate required

documents – ICDs, ISPs,

NR-KPPs

Leverage Benefits of DoDAF 2.0

• Maximize stakeholder value

with out-of-the-box Fit-for-

Purpose

• Improve data quality and

enable critical data analysis

• Integrate capability definition

and project planning with

“traditional” architecture

Improve Information Sharing

• Easily share information

between architects and

information consumers

• Provide relevant insights

to different stakeholders

based on needs

• Analyze information across

a federated architecture

Push-button Document Publishing - For those organizations that need to publish their architecture in the

form of a document, Corporate Publisher provides the ability to create “publication sets” to your specifications

and then generate documents that meet your formatting requirements. This gives DoD organizations the

ability to create templates that automatically generate documents for JCIDS requirements, ICDs, ISPs, NR-

KPPs, etc.

Full lifecycle BPM - The Corporate Modeler Suite includes integration with business process automation and

execution, providing full lifecycle business process management, for those organizations looking to bridge the

gap between architecture and runtime solution delivery. Corporate Modeler includes simulation of process

and systems dynamics models, which can then be moved into the runtime environment, called Corporate

Modeler Synergy, and implemented as web services with full process monitoring.

In addition Casewise provides Professional Services to facilitate the rapid implementation of and

migration to DoDAF 2.0. We also work with numerous large system integrators that can carry the project

forward long after the initial conversion.
