Principal’s Report

Cross CountryCongratulations to the winners of the cross country event last week. We acknowledged the determination and fitness that these students demonstrated at our school assembly this week. Regular exercise is essential for physical health but also has mental health benefits such as improved mood. Thanks to these students for leading the way in maintaining healthy life habits.

ANZAC Soldiers in Our CommunityA number of Year 10 students researched the stories of local ANZAC soldiers in the weeks leading up to ANZAC Day. Mr Douglas and Mr Francis supported students in collating this work into a website to present their research. Our community were able to access this website on ANZAC Day at the Corowa RSL Club. We are immensely proud of the critical thinking that these students displayed throughout the project as well as the personal responsibility undertaken to produce sophisticated work. If you haven’t had the opportunity to view these narratives, you can access them through the link below.

www.chsanzac2018.weebly.comReminders: All schools in NSW have a ‘Duty of Care’ to students. That is, schools have a duty to take care for the safety and welfare of students. If a student needs to attend an appointment during school hours, they must be collected by a parent or a legal guardian from the front office. As part of our Duty of Care, schools are responsible for ensuring that students, when leaving school during school hours, are placed in the care of their legal guardians. If you have any questions, please contact the school by phone on (02) 6033 1889.

Remember to use the designated drop off zone in Tower Street when dropping off students at the rear of the school. A number of vehicles have been entering into the school car park at the beginning and end of day to drop off students near the school buildings. This is creating safety issues as a number of pedestrians are using this area at this time. I reminded students this week that they are expected to walk from the drop off zone into the school grounds. We appreciate your support in maintaining the safety of our students and staff.

NAPLANStudents from Year 7 and Year 9 will be participating in NAPLAN assessments on Tuesday 15 May to Thursday 17 May. We will be holding a rewards day for students who consistently demonstrate that they are achieving their best over the three days. These assessments provide us with a snapshot of student learning across these year groups. We use this along with other assessment data collected regularly by our teachers to inform our planning about improving literacy and numeracy across the school. More details about our strategies for literacy and numeracy can be viewed in the 2018-2020 school plan and Annual School Report available on the website. http://www.corowa-h.schools.nsw.edu.au/

Corowa High School RemembersWe are tremendously proud of the students that represented our school at the Corowa ANZAC Day march during the school holidays. They should be commended on their mature and respectful attitudes, especially Senior students John Schnelle, Hayley Cordwell, Montana Hargreaves and Laura O’Shannassy who spoke at the ceremony.

Cross Country Age ChampsCongratulations to the following students:

Communication is Key!At Corowa High School we strive to communicate effectively with our school community, especially our students and parents. We use many channels for communication including parent meetings, email, facebook, phone calls, text, sending notes home with students and letters.

How are we doing? If you have some constructive feedback on our communication methods, or some ideas on how we can improve, call us on (02) 6033 1889 or send an email to [email protected].

Apocalypse Aborted! An accident occurred and we were all at risk of joining the walking dead! Luckily for us, our Senior Chemistry class was assigned the task of finding an antidote before time ran out and the contamination spread!

Of course, our wonderful Senior students were successful in this practical lesson!

Where in the World is Saskia Van Leeuwen?I’ve been in America for nearly 3 months now and it’s been great!

I am currently living in a small town on the border of Iowa and Nebraska called Onawa. I attend West Monona high also know as the Spartans! Since I’ve started school I have been able to join both track and softball teams and both are great fun!

The biggest thing I’ve done here so far has got to be prom. Prom was full of dancing, singing and laughing and it was so much fun. My school also has a thing called after prom and this year we went to a family fun centre with laser tag, paint-ball and unlimited pizza!

I hope it’s going to start warming up soon because it’s been freezing!

I hope everything’s going well,

Saskia Van Leeuwen

Schnelle Success! At Corowa High School, we love to hear when our alumni students are succeeding in their chosen fields.

Matthew and Patrick Schnelle are doing just that! Matthew has graduated from St John’s College (University of Sydney) with First Class Honours in Chemical Engineering. His brother, Patrick, who is also studying at St John’s College has been awarded the Herbert Francis Benning prize which recognises consistent academic progress and significant contribution to college life.

Girls Lead The Way Montana HargreavesOn 16-19 April, I went on a business-based trip to Sydney that was run by the UBS (United Bank of Switzerland). During this time, I stayed at the Women’s College, an attachment to the Sydney University.

On the first night, the Women’s College held a formal dinner where we were introduced to our mentors for the course of the camp. The next day we learnt about image and attitude, which taught us how to talk powerfully in front of crowds, how to ‘Power Pose’ and use the method of ‘1 thought, 1 person’.

At our Graduation lunch we were presented our certificates of completion and met the man who individually chose the 40 girls out of the 200+ applicants. He informed me that I was the first Corowa High School student he had ever had and he hopes to see more.

This camp’s aim is to encourage more women to be a part of the male dominated business world. I can’t recommend this experience enough. Thank you to Mrs Lake who gave me this opportunity - without you I wouldn’t have had such an incredible, life changing experience.
