States), while the trend continues to decrease in the WHO African Region and Eastern Mediterranean
Region.
Figure 1. Countries or areas with reported confirmed cases of COVID-19, covering the period from 19 August to 25 August 2020, as of 26 August 2020 10:00 (GMT+8)
1 0-No cases—no cases detected and no clear signals of transmission for at least 28 days (or two incubation periods); 1-Imported
cases—cases reported in the past 28 days are imported or linked to importation within 3 generations, and there are no clear signals of local transmission; 2-Localized community transmission—cases reported in the past 28 days are locally acquired and localized, and there are no clear signals of large-scale community transmission; 3-Large-scale community transmission—most cases reported in the past 28 days have no known link, and there are clear signals of widespread and increasing transmission.

External Situation Report #17
26 August 2020 Period of Report: 19 August 2020 to 25 August 2020 as of 26 August 2020, 10:00 (GMT+8)
● Reports of clusters in some countries and areas in the Western Pacific Region highlight the role younger
populations may play in chains of sustained community transmission.
● A higher proportion of cases among people aged less than 45 years were reported in the new phase of
the pandemic in Australia (64%), the Philippines (67%) and Singapore (89%).
Figure 5. Proportion of confirmed COVID-19 cases <45 years of age in selected countries or areas, covering
the period from 19 August to 25 August 2020, as of 26 August 2020 10:00 (GMT+8)
New guidance ● Exploration of COVID-19 health care worker cases: Implications for action addresses the issue of health
care workers facing a high risk of infection with SARS-COV-2 from exposure in health care facilities while
not treating COVID-19 patients, in the household and in the community. The guidance provides national
and subnational public health authorities and health care facility managers with a system to detect health
care worker cases, investigate avenues of infections and guide appropriate responses at the facility and
public health levels based on the findings of the investigation.
● New advice has been published on the use of masks for children in partnership with the United Nations
Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

with guest speaker Toufiq Ali from Fiji, was held on 19 August 2020.
Information and planning
● The Western Pacific Regional COVID-19 Dashboard has been updated with information on non-
pharmaceutical interventions, epidemiology and health care capacity utilization from Member States’
ministries of health and from joint situational report data of WHO country offices.
● WHO invites Member States to continue to participate in the dashboard by sharing their assessments and
relevant information.
● WPRO continues to provide guidance and support on COVID-19 response among Member States in
essential topics such as transmission assessment, early detection, epidemic analysis for response
decision-making, surveillance of vulnerable populations and the establishment of a multisource
surveillance system.
Operations support and logistics
● WPRO together with the Global COVID-19 Supply Chain has supported 21 Member States including 12
Pacific Island Countries and areas in delivering bulk supplies of personal protective equipment (PPE),
laboratory consumables and biomedical equipment with a total value of US$ 13.8 million. Biomedical
equipment including oxygen concentrators and intensive care unit (ICU) patient ventilators continue to
be delivered to Member States in the Region.
● The Jack Ma Foundation distributed nearly 10 million masks to Member States in the Pacific and Papua
New Guinea. Some stock will be held in strategic staging areas like Fiji and Brisbane, Australia.
● Cepheid GeneXpert kits continue to be delivered to the Pacific Island countries and areas. Last week, an
additional 3 600 cartridges were received in addition to the expected 2 000. An emergency stock will be
held in the South Pacific staging warehouse for emergency response where needed.
● WPRO continues to work on strengthening testing capacity in the Pacific region. An alternate point-of-
care system by Credo Diagnostic is being considered and undergoing an independent evaluation by the
Dohety Institute in Melbourne, Australia, a WHO Collaborating Center.
Partner coordination
