We are looking forward to the busy yet abbreviated month of February! With so many events coming up, please be sure to watch for announcements from your child’s teacher as well as the weekly Friday updates, Friday folders and our school calendar. Each year in February schools across Jefferson County begin to develop their budgets and staffing for the following school year. Budget priorities are discussed and determined in collaboration with our school accountability committee: Partners in Education (PIE) as well as our teacher-leadership team. Top priorities taken under advisement this year include: instructional coaching, small class sizes, and mental health support. These support structures are further explained below. Instructional Coaching – An instructional coach is typically an experienced teacher who works directly with both licensed teachers and paraprofessionals in the building to support student growth and achievement. He/She focuses on learning opportunities that facilitate continued improvement of instructional best practices, planning, assessment, differentiation, intervention, interpretation of data and goal setting (among other things). On-going learning and growth for our teachers is essential to meeting the ever-changing and widely varying academic needs of our students. Small Class Sizes – Our commitment to small class sizes (whenever possible) allows teachers the opportunity to provide greater individualized instruction as well as increased time and attention for all students. Average class sizes are typically smaller in K-3 as students learn skills in self-regulation, structure and routine. Class sizes then increase in 4 th & 5 th grades with the development of maturity and independence. Mental Health Support – Many of our students are familiar with Mrs. Collins, our School Social Worker and Ms. Shea, our GT Counselor. Together they work to provide mental health support to all of our students at Coronado. In addition to academic, the social/emotional development of our students is an important priority we have identified as we work together to support overall growth for the whole child. If you have any questions about the school budgeting process or the priorities identified through our parent and teacher advisory groups, please do not hesitate to reach out. Thank you for continuing to partner with us as we work together to build bright futures for our students at Coronado Elementary and beyond. Take care of each other, Amanda Pierorazio Principal Jeffco Generations Vision
