Welcome to our Autumn Newsletter. I hope you will find it full of interest and that it helps to keep you up to date with how our two hospices continue to provide much needed care for the people of Cornwall. Our big news this autumn is the progress we are making with the refurbishment at Mount Edgcumbe Hospice in St Austell. With much of the building now over 30 years old, we need to spend significant sums on bringing the building up to the latest standards of infection control and patient care. The combination of a very generous legacy and the award of a grant of almost £500,000 from the Department of Health has enabled us to take this important project forward. I am delighted with the results so far and phase three, which includes the hospice concourse and reception areas, is now under way. It has been a very disruptive period for staff and volunteers but we have maintained as many beds as possible to keep the service going during the building works.I look forward to seeing the finished result in April next year.

At St Julia’s Hospice in Hayle we are now bringing into use the new beds and this is helping to balance the temporary reduction at Mount Edgcumbe. When all the work is completed we will, I am sure, be able to be proud of the two state of the art hospice facilities that you have helped to achieve through your kind support.Thank you and best wishes

The spring & summer period has been a busy time in all clinical areas of St Julia’s Hospice, with our team helping people with complex needs, providing high standards of specialist palliative care and support to patients and their families. As well as caring for in-patients, our medical team have continued to offer advice and support to patients in their homes and in other care settings. The successful recruitment of five staff nurses, a house-keeper, a chef and a ward clerk has enabled us to open the new bedrooms, which were completed in 2012.St Julia’s was inspected by the Care Quality Commission in March and received an excellent report. The inspector was very impressed with all aspects of care provided as well as standards of quality and safety.

You may have read in the local media recently that Cornwall Hospice Care has received a number of grants to help fund the refurbishment project of Mount Edgcumbe Hospice in St Austell.Since being built over 30 years ago, Mount Edgcumbe Hospice has undergone a number of piecemeal renovations, with extensions being added to the building. The current refurbishment work started in May and the project is expected to be complete in April 2014.This project will redesign, reorganise and refurbish some parts of the hospice which are no longer fit for purpose and which struggle to meet the modern standards for compassionate patient care and infection control.

The redesign and refurbishment of the hospice will improve the patient and visitor environment in a number of ways, including:• A new reception, circulation and seating

area will be created which will allow a significantly enhanced patient and visitor experience. This area will incorporate clusters of cafe-style seating, a self-service cafe area and smaller, private areas of comfortable seating.

• The patient lounge will be modernised into a warm, inviting room for patients to relax in, while looking out onto the established and well-tended gardens.

• The old leaky conservatory will be demolished and replaced, incorporating wide doors and easy access direct from the ward areas. Externally, a new patio will be created with a garden shelter and outside seating.

• All rooms will meet infection control and modern nursing standards as well as providing a positive environment for patients and their visitors.

• One of the larger single bedrooms will be refurbished to incorporate the immediately adjacent bathroom to create a dedicated isolation room.

• En-suite bathrooms in four patient rooms will be converted to shower rooms to increase patient comfort, providing independence, dignity and wheelchair access for those patients who struggle to walk.

The project has been split into seven phases to ensure continuation of

service at the hospice

Page 5: Cornwall Hospice Care Winter 2013 enewsletter

5The project has been split into seven phases to ensure continuation of service at the hospice, with minimal impact on patients, staff and visitors. Phase three has just commenced which incorporates the main entrance, reception, circulation and seating area. Until this phase is complete, a temporary entrance will be in-situ at the side of the building for hospice visitors.

1980 - Mount Edgcumbe Hospice welcomed its first patients after volunteers led the way to raise funds to build and equip Cornwall’s first hospice.

1989 - conservatory for the patients added, overlooking a new patio area and garden.

2002 - refurbishment providing three more single en-suite rooms and a dedicated room for complementary therapies.

1993 - building second extension starts to provide a new four bed ward and three new single en-suite rooms, a designated day care centre, additional offices, new entrance, open concourse and paved court yard.

1988 - extension to provide a Chapel and seminar room opened by HRH Duchess of Kent.

2011 - outpatient unit completed.

Mount Edgcumbe - A brief history

This planned refurbishment is an extremely economical way of bringing the hospice building up to date to ensure viability of the service in the future. NHS England's Capital Grants Programme have awarded £489,600 towards the project and funding from Charitable Trusts and Foundations has generated over £140,000 to date. The charity was the grateful beneficiary of a very significant and unexpected legacy during 2012 and the Trustees aim to use this windfall to ensure this project reaches completion and ensure the hospice is fit for use to serve the people of Cornwall well into the future.

Look Good Feel GoodHelping with hair lossFor many women the loss of hair as a result of cancer treatments can add to the distress and discomfort they are already experiencing.Which is where Cornwall Hospice Care’s Look Good/Feel Good service can help – bringing some colour and comfort into their lives. The free service, run by a team of 14 volunteers, offers friendly advice and practical tips on how to wear hats, scarves and turbans with the aim of making women feel more confident with their body image. Our volunteers can show patients how to wear and style their headwear and can even recommend suitable items for special occasions, such as weddings. A selection of hats and scarves are available to buy.

The service has a clinic at The Sunrise Centre, Treliske, Truro on the first Monday of each month and can also be used by patients at both hospices. Volunteers are also able to visit people’s homes to give advice.

Knitting up a storm! Thanks to the continued generosity and support of an army of knitters throughout Cornwall, Sister Lizzie Hotton and Staff Nurse Jane Gooders of Mount Edgcumbe Hospice in St Austell were able to take receipt of a new drugs trolley for the ward and furniture for the lymphoedema clinic. The knitting stall, which is situated in the foyer in Mount Edgcumbe Hospice has raised thousands of pounds for the hospice over 25 years. In the previous 12 months alone £3000 has been raised from the sale of hand-knitted baby clothes, blankets and tea cosies. We are extremely grateful to all our knitters for their continued support. The monies raised are put to good use for the benefit of our patients in our continuing work of caring.

I’ll have the Carrot and Mint Soupto start... then the Parmigianowith salad... and the poachedplums for dessert. These are just some of the delicious dishes that Pier and the catering team at Mount Edgcumbe Hospice have been creating as they try out a new seasonal menu. “Our new menu uses fresh, local, seasonal produce which is much more cost effective and tasty!” explained Pier Palena, Catering Supervisor at Mount Edgcumbe, “People these days are much more aware of food as they travel more and watch cookery programmes on TV so we have adapted to fit with modern eating habits.”The menu at the hospice will now follow a seasonal rotation with lighter meals on the spring/summer menu and more hearty dishes featuring in the autumn/winter version. Currently meals are being trialed and then the team will decide which dishes will make the final cut.

“We are really enjoying being able to cook different meals, we really feel that we are making good use of our chef training and we have had some great feedback from patients, families and staff about the new menu.” said Danielle and Justine, Cooks at Mount Edgcumbe Hospice. Carolyn Campbell, Consultant at Cornwall Hospice Care, shares the enthusiasm of the catering team and explains the importance of a healthy diet to our patients. “Being able to eat and drink is something that many patients and families are anxious about. Being unwell often reduces people’s appetite and one of the things that is valued about our hospices is being able to enjoy food which is easy to eat and appetising.”

Wadebridge Shop is very grateful to their loyal supporter Doreen from Padstow who makes wonderful crochet blankets for the shop. Lynette Hollett, assistant shop manager, said ‘We have so many comments about the blankets and we even get people buying them for their

dogs who tell us they love them too! Doreen has been making the blankets for Cornwall Hospice Care for many years and describes it as a godsend to her but I don’t think she realises how good it is for us too.’ Keep up the good work Doreen!

Hospice Care's Regional Growth Fund award through the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly LEP is fantastic news for an important charity. The improvements to the till system will be vital in making the organisation more efficient - helping their retail division to grow and creating jobs for the local area."Paul Brinsley, Chief Executive for Cornwall Hospice Care said: "We have found the demand for our shops to be increasing year on year. This investment from the Superfast

EPOS System GrantCornwall Hospice Care is the latest recipient of a grant from the Superfast Cornwall Fund, supported by the Government’s Regional Growth Fund. The £50,000 grant will help improve systems across its countywide shops and central warehouse in Holmbush. This will help the retail division grow, creating up to 13 new jobs.

Each of the shops will receive a new till and Electronic Point of Sale (EPOS) system which will automate existing lengthy administration procedures, improve sales reporting and introduce a computerised stock management system for the sale of new goods.Business Minister Michael Fallon said: "Cornwall

Cornwall Fund will help us continue that growth. The new system will automate what is currently an onerous task, recording Gift Aid on donations, and other charities have seen an increase of Gift Aid income after implementing this system. Gift Aid allows us to claim an extra 25% from HMRC on sales of donated goods, so is a valuable income stream."The new till systems will be rolled out at the beginning of 2014.
