Providing exceptional service to all of Nebraska

The University of Nebraska Medical Center describes itself as a “500-mile” campus. UNMC programs extend fully across the state, from Omaha to the Panhandle. Recently, I’ve had the opportunity to witness firsthand some of the exceptional services our students, faculty, and staff provide to make sure the College of Dentistry is fulfilling that statewide UNMC mission. They are doing an amazing job, and these services are above and beyond our regular dental and dental hygiene educational programs.

As mentioned in the summer issue of Cornhusker Impressions, in May we provided the annual COD Dental Continuing Education Caravan across Nebraska. That program, through which faculty provide free continuing education lectures to alumni across the state, has now been in existence for 25 years. I’m fairly certain that our college is the only dental school in the United States that delivers a free program in this manner. During those 25 years, our faculty members have traveled more than 25,000 miles and given 350 lecture hours of continuing education to more than 8,000 attendees.

In June, we once again provided Children’s Dental Days in the Panhandle, now for the ninth consecutive year. The Panhandle event is in addition to the Lincoln Children’s Dental Day, held at least once a year since 2001. Each year we take a busload of about 50 students, faculty, and staff (and others drive cars) on a journey of at least 800 miles to deliver care to underserved children in multiple sites across the Panhandle, from Gordon to Sidney. And every year at least 200 children receive free care during this two-day event.

This July, students made the most of another volunteer opportunity. The Nebraska Mis-sion of Mercy held its eighth annual event in Alliance, again in the Panhandle. The event happened to fall on the weekend of July 13-14. Students had finished classes and were on summer break starting July 6. Although the NMOM is not a COD-sponsored event, the COD has always been involved with a strong group of volunteers, including students.

Because the Nebraska Mission of Mercy occurred during our summer break, many of our senior dental students were participating in their externship rotations. In addition, the NMOM site was 400 miles from Lincoln. We wondered if students, faculty, and staff volunteers would make that big time commitment. But more than 50 volunteer students, faculty, and staff came through and participated in the two-day event, which provided the equivalent of about $500,000 in free care to needy patients. Some patients had driven more miles than we had and waited in line outside overnight. All our COD volunteers, and especially our students, were praised for their efforts. The respect and sensitivity our students showed to their NMOM patients was exemplary.

The 500-mile campus is real, and the College of Dentistry is a leading contributor to this statewide effort. Our students, faculty, and staff are doing an outstanding job of meeting that mission of service. Once again, I thank all who support the COD in so many ways to help us advance our mission of teaching, research, and service.

Dental students taking part in the extramural ro-tation program provided care for 1,500 to 2,000 patients last year and performed 3,000 to 4,000 procedures, said Dr. Kim McFarland, associate professor in the Department of Oral Biology at the UNMC College of Dentistry.

While the contribution is noteworthy, McFarland said, she expects to see those numbers increase as fourth-year dental students are encouraged to see more patients during their extramural experiences and the extramural rotations are extended from four to six weeks beginning in July 2013.

She estimates eventually as many as 10,000 patient visits a year could be attributed to dental

students in the college’s extramural program in dental offices and public health clinics in rural and underserved areas of Nebraska and three surrounding states.

“That’s 10,000 patient visits a year that wouldn’t happen if our students weren’t going out and do-ing these rotations,” she said at the 2012 Dental Preceptors Conference in the Dixon Lecture Hall.

The annual conference brings together precep-tors—dentists who oversee the students on rota-tions—for orientation, continuing education, and an opportunity to share best practices. Forty-three dentists in Nebraska, Wyoming, Kansas, and South Dakota serve as preceptors, becom-

EXTRAMURAL ROTATION continued from pg 4

ing College of Dentistry faculty members. They open their offices and clinics to dental students and provide opportunities for students to learn firsthand about dental procedures, business practices, teamwork, and community involve-ment.

“We are making a contribution in regards to some of the access-to-care needs, and soon students will be seeing additional patients and providing more services,” McFarland told the preceptors. “We are also trying to give students role models and examples of success-ful people like you.” She said preceptors help students envision how they can enjoy satisfy-

ing careers in rural communities, whether in a private practice, a public health clinic, or a Veterans Administration hospital setting.

In an interview after the conference, McFar-land said the college is working with preceptors to make sure they understand that the students need to provide dental care while in extramural rotations in offices and clinics. Some precep-tors may have thought the students were there to observe, she said. The conference was help-ful, she said, in establishing the fact that the students are “way beyond observing and need to be doing dentistry.”

For now, fourth-year students spend four weeks, generally in two separate extramural locations, learning what dental practice is like. Starting next summer, students will spend six weeks with their dental preceptors, thanks, in part, to a five-year, $3.5 million grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

The HRSA grant also sponsored the daylong preceptors conference June 8, which featured a history of the program by Brian Lange, PhD, program director, and a presentation by Dr. Bill Piskorowski of the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. College of Dentistry faculty members spoke on current issues in their spe-cialties: Dr. Shawneen Gonzalez, oral radiology; Dr. Henry St. Germain and Dr. Larry Haisch, adult restorative dentistry; and Dr. Nagamani Narayana, oral pathology. Dental student Kyle Beulke gave a case presentation, and students and recent graduates shared their expectations and experiences.

McFarland said the extramural rotation program, also known as service learning, is structured, requiring student orientation and preparation, evaluations by stu-dents and preceptors, and student reflection papers.

“It is a true partnership with the community” that is based on community need, is connected to the dental college curriculum, and is focused on outcomes, she said. “Students learn about the connection between their service, and their academic course work, and their roles as citizens.” And they ask, “Am I making a differ-ence?”

Dean John Reinhardt told the preceptors that student learning has changed over the years as students today tend to be visual learners who like to work in teams and are good at helping one another. Instructors must stay up-to-date on ways to hold students’ attention. Inter-professional education, critical thinking, and evidence-based heath care are emphasized in today’s dental school curriculum.

“There’s a feeling among all health professions that we have to work together better as teams,” he said, noting the example set by preceptors and the students assigned to work with them.

Reinhardt thanked the preceptors “for what you do for our students when they are under your watch.” Nothing is better than having

“strong leaders show young people who have a thirst to learn what they can do and how they can do it,” he said. He urged the preceptors to be good role models and positive influences and to reinforce quality dentistry, appropriate patient treatment, and high professional and ethical standards.

McFarland also asked preceptors who serve on school boards or city councils, or who are members of civic organizations, to introduce students to community service. Those experi-ences are some of the highlights students write about in their reflection papers, she said.

Brian Lange, PhD, extramural program director, shares the history of the program with preceptors.

The newest D.H. Reinhardt Scholar is learning to balance teaching, research, and clinical practice and looking to her mentor, Dr. Richard A. Reinhardt, for guidance along the way.

“When I grow up, I want to be Dr. Rick Reinhardt,” said Dr. Amy Killeen, assistant professor in the Department of Surgical Specialties, who began teaching at the UNMC College of Dentistry in 2010. She received her dental degree in 2006, her periodontics certificate in 2010, and her master’s degree in oral biology in 2011, all from Nebraska’s College of Dentistry.

As a D.H. Reinhardt Scholar, Killeen has been awarded a $10,000 grant to conduct a two-year clinical study looking at effective ways to improve periodontal maintenance using a common anti-inflammatory drug, minocycline microspheres. She is waiting to hear about additional funds from the Nebraska Dental Association.

Killeen says the research is unique because it will involve the patients of third- and fourth-year dental students in the College of Dentistry’s undergraduate periodontal clinic. A goal of the project is to encourage undergraduates to participate in clinical research, and Killeen is hoping the study will lead to creation of a center for clinical-based research involving undergraduate dental students.

Come away with ‘critical eye’“We believe we are starting a good program here, one that can introduce undergraduate students to applicable clinical research. We hope that after being involved in a large study like this, students will come away with

Newest D.H. Reinhardt Scholar excited about

involving undergraduates in periodontal research

a critical eye when looking at products and reading journals,” she said.

“This is exciting for me. It is something new, something I never thought I would get into. I have learned immensely from Dr. (Richard) Reinhardt about how to write a grant and how to conduct a study,” Killeen said. She is particularly pleased because the family of Reinhardt’s late grandfather “is making this happen” through the D.H. Reinhardt Scholar program.

D.H. Reinhardt, a member of the University of Nebraska College of Dentistry’s first graduating class in 1919, practiced in Ba-yard and Scottsbluff. His family established the Reinhardt Scholar program “to enable faculty, in collaboration with undergraduate students, to conduct research applicable to the clinical practice of dentistry.” Family members said he was always “striving to find new ways to solve problems both in and out of dentistry.” He died in 1961.

Fits namesake’s philosophy“I am thrilled the Reinhardt Scholar award has evolved to this kind of a program,” said his grandson Richard Reinhardt, the Bernard J. and Ann Moran Professor of Peri-odontology and co-director of undergradu-ate periodontics. “My grandfather was a practicing dentist. This is exactly the kind of information coming out of our studies that he would have liked to use. It fits very well into his philosophy.”

Reinhardt said Killeen’s research, in which undergraduate students will participate in a prospective clinical study, is rare at the college. Students will provide patient care and followup.

Dr. Amy Killeen

see REINHARDT SCHOLAR pg 8

“We are entering an era in dentistry—I think a healthy era—where practice is based on evidence, and the highest order of evi-dence is a clinical trial like Amy is putting together,” Reinhardt said. “New dentists are bombarded with sophisticated market-ing for this or that product or this or that approach. They have to be able to analyze new techniques and new approaches as they progress through their practice. If they have background in seeing and partici-pating in clinical research, they will have sensitivity to look for those results.”

The clinical study, which will begin this fall, will look at how minocycline microspheres can be used to reduce inflammatory bio-markers and bone loss in periodontal pock-ets in 40 patients who have received active therapy for chronic periodontal disease and are now in the maintenance phase of treatment. The patients will be seen every six months for two years. During those visits, students will take radiographs and apply minocycline microspheres, and investigators will take samples of gingival crevicular fluid to monitor markers of inflammation and bone resorption.

Cornhusker Impressions | 8

Few clinical studies available“Few studies evaluating locally-applied minocycline during periodontal maintenance therapy have been reported even though the drug is commonly used in this protocol,” Killeen wrote in her application for the grant.

“The hypothesis to be tested...is that the use of minocycline at baseline and six-month intervals in conjunction with subgingival me-chanical debridement will reduce interproxi-mal bone height loss and periodontal infl am-mation more than mechanical debridement alone.”

Another 40 patients will receive mechanical debridement alone.

Reinhardt said minocycline microspheres are FDA approved and used to treat patients at the college, but their use has never been tested as an adjunct to periodontal mainte-nance. “The hope is that if this is successful, it may decrease the amount of surgical inter-vention necessary down the road and it may extend the length of time patients can go

between visits,” he said. “If it doesn’t work, we know this approach is not as effective as some other approach could be. We have no vested interest in which way it goes.”

Killeen’s work is inspired by her respect for Reinhardt and the interest he has taken in her career. “He saw someone who was interested in teaching, and he hoped to de-velop me into someone who is multifaceted and can do clinical work, teach in a lecture hall, and conduct research in a lab because he can do all those things. He is wanting to develop those skills and qualities in me,” Killeen said. “I want to soak up all I can.”

Also involved in the project is Dr. Melissa Morris Lang, who received her dental de-gree in 2004 and her periodontics certifi -cate in 2007, both at Nebraska. She now teaches at Creighton University. Creighton patients also will be involved in the research.

On one point in particular, they all agreed.

Five Nebraskans and one Californian taking part in the Summer Medical and Dental Education Program at the UNMC College of Dentistry said the most memorable experi-ence was their participation in the evening Sharing Clinic for older teens and adults who do not have access to regular dental care.

They said they would remember the smiles of gratitude from the needy patients, the op-portunity to use their language skills to calm the patients and translate for caregivers, and the sense of purpose they felt by performing simple tasks.

At the Sharing Clinic, “we were free to roam around, ask questions, and help in any way we could,” said Erin Baldridge of North Platte, a sophomore at Hastings College.

“We also got to do limited dental assisting for dental students, who were very appreciative,” said Maira Hinojosa of Concord, CA, a junior at the University of California-Berkeley.

“It was awesome to see the compassion the dental students showed. They did a very nice job,” said Ben Reimer of Hastings, a junior at Hastings College.

sions to talk about their six-week experience in the Summer Medical and Dental Educa-tion Program (SMDEP). The six were among 21 dental scholars and 59 medical scholars taking part in the program, hosted at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. The program is funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation with direction and technical assistance from the Association of Medical Colleges and the American Dental Education Association. UNMC was one of 12 program sites across the country.

SMDEP is a summer academic enrichment program that offers intensive and personal-ized medical and dental school preparation to qualified college students from underrep-resented or disadvantaged populations. It is designed to give these students some of the skills necessary to be successful in applying for medical or dental school with the ultimate goal of developing a more diverse workforce and improved access to care in rural and other underserved areas.

At the UNMC site, scholars spent Monday through Thursday each week taking science classes, as well as classes in study skills and writing, in Omaha. On Fridays, the dental scholars visited the College of Dentistry, while the medical scholars spent their time at UNMC.

“This one’s special,” said Eric Ahrens of Seward, a junior at the University of Ne-braska at Kearney, when asked about the dress shirt and tie he wore at the College of Dentistry. The scholars said they looked for-ward to their Fridays at the dental college—and dressed up for the day—because of the welcoming and professional atmosphere. “It’s the best part of our week,” one scholar said.

“They really do care about us and our journey to medical or dental school,” said Baylee Col-lins of North Platte, a junior at the College of St. Mary in Omaha. “They really do want us to succeed.” She said her fellow scholars were ambitious, hard working, and caring, and she was leaving the experience motivated to work even harder in school to achieve her dreams.

Dr. Merlyn Vogt, far left, with the Summer Medical and Dental Education Program dental scholars in the Dixon Lecture Hall.

Vogt: ‘Plan for success, prepare for the unexpected’From Dr. Merlyn Vogt, director of the Summer Medical and Dental Education Program at the UNMC College of Dentistry, the scholars said they learned the value of perseverance.

They said Dr. Vogt told them many stories of events that went wrong in his life and that could have been hindrances; but, with perseverance, the scholars said, he overcame them and passed on his positive attitude to others.

“He has made a huge impact, not just on us, but on all the scholars here,” said Ben Reimer, a junior at Hastings College.

In his parting message to the scholars, Vogt told them to always hold their family members close and “to expect the unexpected.” He recommended they read The Tipping Point: How Little Things Make a Big Difference and Outliers: The Story of Success, both by Malcolm Gladwell. While a professional career is important, he said, tragically it can quickly fall apart, and he told the scholars they need to be prepared to pick up the pieces and carry on.

He said he is reminded of this often because in his role as director of admissions, he sees what sometimes happens when applicants are not accepted. “These students come in with dreams, some have wanted to be dentists from grade school,” he said in an interview. “My point was to plan for success, but also prepare for the unexpected. Sometimes, despite the best intentions and your best plans, life will throw you a curve ball, and it wouldn’t be a bad idea to have a contingency plan.”

His own tipping point, he said, came when he learned he had a degenerative corneal condi-tion that resulted in significant visual acuity and problems with depth perception, causing him to change careers from his private endodontics practice to academia. He is now assistant dean for student affairs and director of admissions.

SMDEP continued from pg 11

Andrea Eggleston of Omaha, a sophomore at the University of South Carolina, said she valued the hands-on approach the students experienced at the dental college, as well as the laboratory work. “This gave us the closest connection to actually participating in dentistry and a dental career,” she said. She liked making dental im-pressions and working on the dexterity skills she would need for dentistry.

Dr. Merlyn Vogt, program director and assistant dean for student affairs, said this summer’s scholars were engaged, attentive, and proactive learners who asked great questions.

The scholars became immersed in the classes and exercises just as they would in medical or dental school, so they left with a better sense of whether they truly want to pursue careers in healthcare, he said. The scholars from Nebraska also said they came away with a greater aware-ness of the need for dentists in rural areas and the importance of working in teams and getting along with fellow students in dental school and colleagues in the dental workplace.

They also made friends with fellow scholars from across the country who shared diverse life stories and experiences. Students in the UNMC pro-gram site came from Virginia, Georgia, Michigan, Iowa, North Dakota, Texas, Colorado, Hawaii,

Once a SMDEP scholar, now a dentist in central NebraskaSixty-seven percent of students who par-ticipate in the Summer Medical and Dental Education Program eventually are accepted into dental or medical school, a significantly high percentage, said Dr. Merlyn Vogt.

Through the years, 20 program scholars have graduated from the UNMC College of Dentistry. One of them, Andrew Benson, a 2006 SMDEP scholar and a 2012 College of Dentistry graduate, was featured in the June issue of Charting Progess, a blog written by Dr. Rick Valachovic, executive director of the American Dental Education Association.

Valachovic wrote: “Rural Nebraskans now have one more dentist they can rely on, and next year, underserved urban New Jersey residents may be able to say the same. Where did these new practitioners come from? Part of the credit goes to the Summer Medical and Dental Education Program, which celebrated a landmark event last month: the graduation from dental school of the first cohort of SMDEP dental scholars.”

Dr. Benson, who was in the second group of SMDEP scholars, grew up on a farm between Grand Island and Central City and entered Wayne State College as part of the Rural Health Opportunities Program (RHOP). What he gained most as a SMDEP scholar, he said, was the opportunity to get to know fellow scholars from across the United States. “It was really a unique opportunity to get to know a lot of different people,” he said in an interview with Cornhusker Impressions. He also valued the time spent at the dental college with faculty and program leaders in an informal, low-key atmosphere, away from the pressure of the school year.

“That was by far my highlight. I got to see life at the dental college. To see if I would fit there, if it was a place I could see myself, and it was,” Benson said.

He said he found the College of Dentistry to be a welcoming place when he was a SMDEP scholar and later when he was a full-time dental student. Dentistry turned out to be a perfect combination of what he likes to do best—working with his hands and being around people.

He now practices general dentistry with Family First Dental, dividing his time between Grand Island and Loup City. “It’s been exciting. Every day, I learn a little more,” he said after one month in practice. While he misses being able to lean on his College of Dentistry instructors, he said, he also appreciates the opportunity to use the decision-making skills he was taught and to make decisions on his own with his patients’ needs foremost in mind.

His rural background, as well as this involvement in RHOP and the college’s emphasis on underserved areas, influenced his decision to practice dentistry in central Nebraska, he said.

“I grew up in a small community where people knew each other and developed relationships within the community,” he said. He and his wife, Kristin, now want to experience that as contributing members of the community.

and Puerto Rico, as well as from California and Nebraska.

Maira said while she was well aware of the importance of the doctor-patient relationship in dentistry, the summer program introduced her to aspects of dentistry she had never considered. “The dental field is much bigger than I thought,” she said, citing research, organized dentistry, public health, and oral pathology. In the “drill and fill” session, she learned the correct way to hold some dental instruments, noting, “It’s really harder than you think.”

Eric said SMDEP solidified his decision to apply for dental school. “This made me want to go back to (UNK) this fall and work that much harder to achieve my goal,” he said. He said he especially appreciated learning about the organization of the college and the opportunity to interact with faculty, students, and staff. “I felt a part of something,” he said.

Erin, too, appreciated interacting with professors and students, including teaching assistants, An-thony Olson and Casey Filbert. Both she and Ben said they were humbled by the experience.

“Everyone here was as eager to learn as much as they could,” said Maira, who noted that she was heading back to California after her first visit to Nebraska with a smile on her face.

Stan Harn thought that the 2011-2012 school year was his 39th year at the UNMC College of Dentistry and that he would teach another year before considering retirement.

So, last spring when he received a letter inform-ing him that he was being honored for 40 years of teaching, he immediately crafted an email to UNMC Chancellor Harold Maurer to set the record straight. Before sending the email, how-ever, he wisely checked college records.

“You’ve been here 40 years,” he was told. “How did I lose track of a full year?” he asked. When quizzed about retirement now, he plans to say,

“I will take each year as it comes.”

Harn, professor in the Department of Oral Biology, was recognized for 40 years of service at the University of Nebraska Medical Center’s annual faculty meeting in Omaha. He began teaching anatomy to dental and hygiene students at the College of Dentistry in 1972,

fresh out of a PhD program in anatomy at the University of Utah Medical School.

Through those four decades in the anatomy lab and after receiving accolades for teaching and community service, Harn says he has learned a few lessons, too. “I have learned to be more understanding, to be less haughty. I don’t think so much about myself; I think more about the students. I’m more personable about life,” he said.

In addition to teaching, Harn has supervised student research projects and hosted high school students and nursing students—as many as 1,000 a year— for demonstrations in the lab. With Dr. Curtis Kuster and Gwen Hlava, RDH, he founded and directed the Children’s Dental Health Carnival, a forerunner of Children’s Dental Day. He now coordinates services and equipment for Dental Day and the college’s Sharing Clinic. He also is founder and curator of the Dental Museum, which is believed to be the third largest public collection of dental equipment and furnishings in the United States.

To recognize Harn’s contribution to the college, Cornhusker Impressions asked him for high-lights of the past four decades:

Q: What has stayed the same?A: “My office, cadaver tanks, probes, charts, good times in anatomy lab, my dinosaur projector and 3X4 slides, and an abundance of student workers, known as the Harn Kids.”

Q: What has changed?A: “College of Dentistry construction, class size from 66 in 1972 to 48 today, room numbers, IT, and rules associated with electronic patient records.”

Q: What are your proudest accomplishments?A: “Teaching awards and honors, founding and serving as curator of the Dental Museum, service projects, and preparing outstanding students for boards and life. I have enjoyed my students; many have been like sons and daughters.”

Q. What do you mean by preparing students for life?A. “To teach them to take care of their patients, to not look at the money, to be humble.”

Q: What is your philosophy of teaching?

A: “To teach a demanding course, but be fair, compassionate, and understanding. To be young at heart.” Dr. Sam Jacoby, a former student, recently wrote to Harn, “I hope you know that most students’ feelings about you progressed from dread to respect to love!”

Looking back, Harn reflected on highlights of the last 40 years, dividing events roughly in 10-year intervals.

First Decade When Harn joined the faculty, he made major changes in the anatomy lab that remain today. The black frames of the cadaver tanks and the lab stools were repainted gray, and wall-sized posters were hung to create an atmosphere that was lighter and more conducive to learning. He and his assistant, the late Dr. Al Kleitsch, prepared 3X4 slides that Harn still uses in lectures.

Harn also changed the approach in the lab from dissection to a prosection program, in which he dissected hundreds of cadavers himself. Students then could study the body structure, both superficially and in depth. He also changed the way cadavers were stored, out of respect and to prolong the time they could be studied.

Second DecadeWhen Kleitsch retired, “I found myself on my own for everything,” Harn said, so he hired pre-dental and dental students as student workers. Dr. Paul Hansen, now associate professor in the Department of Adult Restorative Dentistry, was Harn’s first work-study student.

In the late 1970s, with the permission of the late Dean Richard Bradley and the Alumni Association, Harn took steps to start a dental museum. “I already liked old things,” he said, but he became serious about dental artifacts after seeing an 1895 Buffalo Dental Manufac-turing catalogue. One of the first donations was an 1890s dental office that had been given to UNL’s Morrill Hall.

With the establishment of a Museum Fund years later, the collection grew. About 300 members now donate to the fund. Harn said his goal has always been to find a permanent home for the museum, which contains “thou-

sands upon thousands” of items ranging in size from an oversized 1915 X-ray machine to flakes of gold used for gold foil restorations in the 1930s. The newest acquisitions include an 1840s walnut dental chair; an 1872 Morrison drill, the first foot pedal drill; a rosewood spit-toon from the early 1870s; and an 1893 electric drill, also a first.

One item that isn’t in the museum, but that students say belongs there, is a pair of black, heavy-duty work boots that Harn wore in the lab for more than 30 years. He gave them up in 2006 after he broke his leg and dislocated his foot in a fall. He put the boots away and switched to more comfortable athletic shoes.

Third DecadeHarn was one of the founders and creators of the annual Children’s Dental Health Carnival, which began in 1988 to promote preventive dentistry to children and parents and to introduce students to community service. The carnival, which continued for almost a decade, offered oral screenings, orthodontic evalua-tions, and home care instruction, as well as games, entertainment, and educational booths to more than 2,500 children.

Fourth DecadeRecent years have brought physical problems that have caused Harn to adjust his teaching style. After being diagnosed with chronic leukemia in 2009, he switched to video-taped lab demonstrations to reduce his exposure to formaldehyde, one known cause of leukemia. Students watch the taped lab demonstrations in a lecture hall and receive copies for viewing at home. He said the taped demonstrations enhance rather than detract from his teaching.

“Looking back, I have obviously had to change for my own self-preservation. But it hasn’t changed my enthusiasm for teaching,” he said. “I don’t want to be here if I am not in my first-rate game plan. But, if I am able—physi-cally, mentally, and emotionally—I will continue to teach.”
