Dear Friends,

It’s time for Corner Shower and Laundry’s third annual Valentine’s Day fundraising

campaign. It’s a time when you can again help by sharing love and hope with those

in need. We continue to work diligently to bring our vision of a shower and laundry

facility to fruition.

In this past year, Corner Shower and Laundry worked closely with Integrity Building

Group to create and finalize a building design plan that enabled us to solicit bids

from numerous contractors where we were able to compare ‘apples to apples’ in the

submitted bids. We are excited and proud to announce that the contract to

renovate our allotted basement space of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church into the

Corner Shower and Laundry has been awarded to Corrado Contracting. As you’ll

recall, already existing in a portion of the basement of this church is Manna

Community Meal – a proud organization that has been feeding the homeless and

others in need for decades. It is their guests, and others in the community, that

inspire us to build, operate and maintain this needed facility.

Corner Shower and Laundry will house four private shower stalls, three sink stations

and a lavatory in the shower area. In the laundry area we will have four washers

and dryers with spacious counters for folding. And, finally, there will be a reception

area and another lavatory. It is our mission to “give people a fresh start” by

providing a warm, clean, safe place to wash/groom themselves and do laundry.

We hope that you’ll be able to donate again and to share news of our mission with

others. Not only are funds still needed for construction, but we also need funds to

support the launch and ongoing operations of Corner Shower and Laundry (staff,

supplies, utilities, rent, etc.) We have enclosed our current newsletter, or you can

Facebook at Corner Shower and Laundry. Online donations can be accepted there,

or you can fill in the enclosed card and mail your generous gifts to us.

NEWSLETTER FEBRUARY 2018 With great humility from countless blessings and a deep faith amidst increasing societal challenges, we would like to give you an update on the progress of Corner Shower and Laundry (CSL). We are inspired by the Manna Community Meal guest’s daily challenges to survive on the street and the miracles we witness. Like when CSL did not know how to pay for a broken water pipe, the miracle happened when a volunteer passing out sandwiches in the St. Peter’s Church parking lot was asked by a CSL member, Janet Ray, “Where do you see God?” the volunteer said, “In the Manna Meal’s guest’s eyes.” When the volunteer asked Janet the same thing she said, “When God provides in a time of need, like when the pipes break, something will pop up.” The volunteer then said, “I am from Tim Murphy, a plumber and a member of Corktown Blessing Group.” The pipe was fixed in two days. Blessings. Countless blessings because there are people who care. We are excited to announce that the contract to renovate our allotted basement space of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church into the CSL has been awarded to Corrado Contracting. It is Manna Community Meals’ guests, and others in the community, that inspire us to build, operate, and maintain a safe place to shower and clean their clothes.

2017 Accomplishments - otherwise known as miracles of unexpected kindness.

▪ Critical input on new boiler sizing by a “young” plumber. 74-year-old Joe, who has had several heart attacks, loves his trade and helping people. We are working with our contractor for potential savings. Thanks Joe!

▪ Leaky waste pipes have been repaired. Thanks David Perez and Murphy Brothers! ▪ Professional architectural drawings have been rendered. Thanks John Biggar of the Integrity

Building Group! ▪ Electrical assessment conducted to assure no overload. Thanks TAC! ▪ Asbestos removal has been completed to keep construction workers and shower users safe. Thanks

Phase I Construction

CSL’s mission to “give people a fresh start” by providing a warm, clean, safe place to wash and groom themselves and do laundry. Phase II Operations

CSL will provide safe, clean shower and laundry facilities. The expected outcome of providing these services could be a 45% decrease in emergency visits and 30% improved quality of life.

Phase III Development of Commercial Laundry Operation

CSL’s long range plans are to provide commercial laundry services to help fund its operations and provide supportive employment for our guests. Corktown area (and beyond) businesses will be solicited as potential customers.



Fundraising There is much to be grateful for

CSL has raised $91,084 from 251 individuals, families, faith and other institutions! CSL is very proud that 99% of donations go directly to funding our project or raising funds; we have been able to keep administrative costs (bank service charges, etc.) and fundraising costs (fundraising mailings) to a minimum.

Corner Shower and Laundry (CSL)

CSL, formed by a group of volunteers joined together to achieve the goal of

providing a clean, safe, comfortable facility for the homeless in our community to

shower and launder their clothes.

CSL will primarily target the guests of Manna Community Meals. Manna is

housed in the basement of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church at Michigan Ave. and

Trumbull Ave.

Manna Community Meals has served the poor and homeless in the Corktown

area of Detroit for more than 30 years under the direction of Father Tom

Lumpkin, a priest from the Catholic Day House, and his assistant Marianne

Arbogast.
