Director: Pablo Giorgelli. Starring: Germán de Silva, Hebe Duarte, Nayra Calle Mamani. Argentina/Spain 2011. 86 mins. Spanish with English subtitles.

Winner of three awards at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, including the prestigious Caméra d’Or and Best Film in Critics’ Week. With pitch-perfect performances from character actor Germán de Silva and newcomer Hebe Duarte, LAS ACACIAS tells the story of a long-distance lorry driver who agrees to drive a woman and her 5-month-old child en route from Paraguay to Buenos Aires. A subtle and tender road movie exploring loneliness and the pain of loss, LAS ACACIAS grows into a searingly poignant tale about a passing encounter between two strangers and the unlikely bond that grows between them.Contains one use of strong language.

Director: Bruce Robinson. Starring: Johnny Depp, Amber Heard, Giovanni Ribisi, Aaron Eckhart. USA 2011. 120 mins.

Robinson’s (WITHNAIL & I) THE RUM DIARY stars Johnny Depp as a freelance journalist named Paul Kemp, who’s at something of a crossroads in life. Fed up with New York, he relocates to the Caribbean and starts working for a rundown newspaper. Struggling to carve out a niche for himself, he hits the bottle and begins lusting after the fi ancée (Heard, ZOMBIELAND) of a wealthy businessman (Eckhart, THE DARK KNIGHT), scribing a haphazard journal of his encounters. Adapted from Hunter S. Thompson’s defi nitive novel, THE RUM DIARY returns Depp to his FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS days and captures the zeitgeist of gonzo journalism in the late 1950s.

Director: Simon Curtis. Starring: Michelle Williams, Eddie Redmayne, Emma Watson, Dominic Cooper, Judi Dench. UK 2011. 99 mins.

Based on two of Colin Clark’s biographical books detailing the making of the 1957 fi lm THE PRINCE AND THE SHOWGIRL, which starred Marilyn Monroe alongside Laurence Olivier, MY WEEK WITH MARILYN is the true story of one man’s week-long encounter with the biggest movie star on the planet. In the summer of 1956, set assistant Clark (Redmayne, GLORIOUS 39) is given the honour of escorting Monroe (Williams, BLUE VALENTINE) during her stay in London. As it turns out, chaperoning the world’s most famous woman isn’t exactly plain sailing. Director Simon Curtis makes his feature debut with this bubbly British comedy that also stars Judi Dench, Toby Jones (TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY) and Kenneth Branagh as Laurence Olivier.

DREAMS OF A LIFE (12A)Director: Carol Morley. Starring: Zawe Ashton, Jonathan Harden, Daren Elliot Holmes, Alix Luka-Cain. UK 2011. 95 mins.

Nobody noticed when Joyce Vincent died in her bedsit above a shopping mall in North London in 2003 – her body wasn’t discovered for three years. Who was she? And how could this happen to someone in our day and age? Carol Morley set out to fi nd out. She placed adverts in newspapers, online, and on the side of a London taxi. What she discovered is extraordinary. A range of people that once knew Joyce help to piece together a portrait of the woman who became so forgotten. DREAMS OF A LIFE also becomes a portrait of London in the Eighties, and how we are all different things to different people. It is about how little we may ever know each other, but nevertheless, how much we can love.Contains brief moderate sex references and references to domestic abuse.

Director: Tate Taylor. Starring: Emma Stone, Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, Bryce Dallas Howard, Jessica Chastain, Allison Janney. USA 2011. 146 mins.

Emma Stone is Eugenia ‘Skeeter’ Phelan, a plucky young writer who interviews her best friend’s African-American housekeeper about her experiences working for a well-heeled white family and thereby shakes up the Deep South establishment. This being the 1960s, segregation is still the norm, but in breaking taboo and speaking out against her employers Aibileen has fi nally given her long-suppressed people a voice. This poignant, deeply moving fi lm is fl avoured with a sassy sense of humour, great central performances and a universal morality that is never sentimental. An utter gem.Contains racism theme and one scene of crude behaviour.

Director: Martin Scorsese. Starring: Asa Butterfi eld, Johnny Depp, Chloë Moretz, Christopher Lee. USA 2011. 125 mins.

Martin Scorsese reteams with AVIATOR screenwriter John Logan for this adaptation of Brian Selznick’s unforgettable children’s story The Invention of Hugo Cabret. Asa Butterfi eld (THE BOY IN THE STRIPED PYJAMAS) is young Hugo, an orphan living secretly in a big train station in 1930s Paris. When he encounters a broken robot-like machine, an eccentric girl, and a reserved old man who runs the toyshop, he is thrown into a magical, mysterious adventure that could put his clandestine life in jeopardy – or lead to something better. The all-star cast includes Ben Kingsley, Jude Law and Sacha Baron Cohen as the comedic station inspector.

Director: Luc Besson. Starring: Michelle Yeoh, David Thewlis, Jonathan Raggett, Jonathan Woodhouse. France/UK 2011. TBC mins.

After THE EXTRAORDINARY ADVENTURES OF ADÈLE BLANC-SEC, French auteur Luc Besson returns to more real-world territory with this story, of love winning out against a turbulent political backdrop, based on true events. The protagonists are Burmese pro-democracy activist Aung San Suu Kyi (Yeoh, CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON), who spent 15 years under house arrest until her release in 2010, and her writer lover Michael Aris (Thewlis, HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS). Theirs is an epic story of devotion and passion sacrifi ced for the greater human good. Yeoh approached Besson to helm the project based on his reputation for depicting strong women in his fi lms, and Aung San Suu Kyi is surely his most remarkable heroine. THE LADY has been at the centre of much controversy in Burma, but it is essential viewing nonetheless.

Director: Guy Ritchie. Starring: Robert Downey Jr, Jude Law, Noomi Rapace, Jared Harris. USA 2011. 129 mins.

Director Guy Ritchie reteams with Robert Downey Jr as Sherlock Holmes and Jude Law as Watson in the next instalment of the classic mystery-action adaptations following 2009’s SHERLOCK HOLMES. The detective duo prepare to face down their arch nemesis Professor James Moriarty and are joined by Noomi Rapace in their adventure. When the Crown Prince of Austria dies and Inspector Lestrade declares it was suicide, Holmes steps back to see the big picture. But little does he realise that Professor Moriarty is about to commit a crime that will shock the entire world, and that solving it may be the death of him.Contains moderate violence.

Director: Phyllida Lloyd. Starring: Meryl Streep, Jim Broadbent, Richard E. Grant, Olivia Colman. UK 2011. 105 mins.

Phyllida Lloyd’s biopic of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher features a career-crowning turn from Meryl Streep as the eponymous stateswoman. In fl ashback we follow Margaret Roberts’

political awakening in Blitz-torn Britain through her steady rise to the nation’s hot seat in the late 1970s and her years in offi ce in the ‘80s. At a time of deep-rooted civil unrest and economic instability, Thatcher’s will to eschew expectation and prejudice to become the fi rst female leader of the Western world makes for inspiring cinema, whatever your view on her policies. Vanishing into this defi nitive portrait of one of the most divisive of 20th-century fi gures, Streep is simply sublime.Contains real images of moderate violence, injury detail and brief nudity.

Director: Michel Hazanavicius. Starring: Jean Dujardin, Bérénice Bejo, John Goodman, Malcolm McDowell. France 2011. 100 mins.

THE ARTIST took the fi lm world by storm earlier this year when it had its premiere at Cannes. Now, following a dizzying festival run, Michel Hazanavicius’ impossibly charming fi lm is sure to woo UK audiences. The story takes us back to 1920s Hollywood, where movie icon George Valentin faces a career crisis as the advent of the talkies effectively signals the end of the silent era. To make matters worse, the girl he helped make into a star (Bejo) is about to become the It girl of her generation. Shot in black and white and virtually without dialogue, THE ARTIST might sound like little more than a cute homage, but its wonderfully imaginative script and heartfelt lead performances will see it rank high on critics’ ‘best of’ lists in 2011.

Director: Steven Spielberg. Starring: Jeremy Irvine, Emily Watson, David Thewlis, Tom Hiddleston, Benedict Cumberbatch, Eddie Marsan, Peter Mullan. USA/India 2011. 146 mins.

Based on Michael Morpurgo’s bestselling children’s book and the acclaimed stage production of the same name, Steven Spielberg’s life-affi rming family drama promises to be an early highlight of 2012. Backdropped by a vivid canvas of the First World War, WAR HORSE brings to life the remarkable friendship between a wild steed named Joey and the young man, Albert (newcomer Irvine), who tames and trains him. Their bond is formed on a farm in Devon, and Albert is devastated when Joey is sold to the British cavalry and shipped to the frontline in France. With Europe gripped by confl ict and suffering omnipresent, both Albert and Joey’s plights are cast into a turbine that will test every ounce of their strength and character. Contains infrequent moderate battle violence.

Director: Alexander Payne. Starring: George Clooney, Shailene Woodley, Beau Bridges, Judy Greer. USA 2011. 115 mins.

Middle-aged lawyer Matt King is, in his own words, “the back-up parent”. After a speedboat accident leaves his wife in a coma and with doctors fearing the worst, Matt must try to reconnect with his two young daughters. But taking the patriarchal reins is much harder than he had ever anticipated. Based on Hawaiian author Kaui Hart Hemmings’ punchy debut novel of the same name, THE DESCENDANTS is a deeply poignant and at times riotously funny story of loss and courage that marks a welcome return to the director’s chair for Alexander Payne.
