Tough early games benefit top programs

Some coaches like to pad their teams’ sched-ules with easy wins in non-region games.

But none of the coaches here today at the 2012 Metro PCS Corky Kell Classic believe in that philosophy. For a variety of reasons, each of the ultra-successful coaches involved in today’s event believe in scheduling tough, early-season games for their programs. Some do it for motivation, others do it for the experience. All of them choose to participate because of the challenge and prestige of the event.

DANGLING THE CARROT … Coach Jeff Herron of Camden County led his program to the Kell Classic six straight years from 2004-2009. The Wildcats have returned to the Dome today to play Gwinnett County-power Peachtree Ridge. Herron believes early-season games against big-name opponents help motivate his team in the offseason. “Playing somebody in the first game you

know is a quality opponent and playing in a ven-ue like the Dome excites your kids,” said Herron. “It carries you through spring practice, preseason practice and the summer. We’ve always tried to play somebody good at the beginning of the year for those reasons and we always will no matter what region we’re in.” Another reason for coming back to the Kell Classic was starting the season in the Dome, which has been beneficial to the Wild-cats in the past. “We’ve had a lot of good memories of coming up there (to Atlanta) and playing in the Kell Classic,” said Herron. “We’ve missed it the last two years quite honestly.” “In 2008 and 2009, we were fortunate enough to start the season there and finish the season there so we’re hoping we can have a similar path this year.” North Gwinnett’s Bob Sphire also thinks the motivation of playing a quality program in the season-opener helps his players get ready for

the grind of a season in one of the state’s tough-est football regions. “It should raise everyone’s game and if you’re going to try to compete for a region title in the region we’re in, this can do nothing but help you get ready for that,” said Sphire. Sphire also stated that an opponent from South Georgia’s vaunted Region 1 adds a little something extra to the Kell Classic date, due to the region’s tradition and reputation. “I think it probably adds a little spice to it with our kids,” said Sphire. “There’s no question that that area is really kind of what Georgia high school football is identified with nationally.” “You kind of get that Gwinnett-South Georgia thing, you get that North-South thing, so there’s obviously some elements there that spice it up for the fans, and I’m sure the kids get caught up in that.” Sphire’s Bulldogs have even more motiva-tion in this year’s matchup, as North Gwinnett lost in last year’s Kell Classic to McEachern, then to Colquitt County – this year’s Kell Classic opponent – in the playoffs. It is safe to say the Bulldogs have plenty to play for today. “It’s kind of a double whammy,” said Sphire when told of the potential revenge fac-tor in this year’s game versus Colquitt County. “That’s two bad memories. But it’s a new sea-son, it’s a new year, I’m just focused on trying to get these guys better and get them into the whole process that we’re working to improve every day. This game can do nothing but help you get better.” The motivation of playing a program like Colquitt County in the opener brings to mind an analogy for Sphire.

“I’ve always been a big proponent of (tough season-openers) wherever I’ve coached,” said Sphire. “And I’ve always felt like you can dangle that carrot out in front of your players and your community. If you get in these settings and don’t do well, you get embarrassed. And nobody ever wants to get embarrassed.”

A LOT AT STAKE … From Herron’s perspective playing Peachtree Ridge in the opener will help his team prepare for what will be a gauntlet of a region schedule this year, as the Wildcats move to Region 1 from a pe-rennially unbalanced region. “If I’d have known what was coming I prob-ably wouldn’t have chosen to do (the Kell Clas-sic),” joked Herron. “We feel like Boise State. We’ve been sitting there in the Mountain West all these years and all the sudden somebody’s dropped us in the SEC West. (Region 1) is defi-nitely going to be different for us.” Now in Region 1, Herron realizes he and his team have an obligation to represent their new region and their part of the state. “We’re isolated down here, there’s no question,” said Herron. “There are some un-dertones there of metro Atlanta versus our one South Georgia region. We’re going to do a good job representing our region, Region 1, in this classic and representing the six or seven of us deemed to be South Georgia schools. It’s kind of us against the world.” Today in the Dome, it is abundantly clear that there is a lot more at stake than just wins and losses. Black can be reached at [email protected].

Last season, the Kell Longhorns nearly pulled off what would have been the upset of the year before falling to eventual Class AAAAA champion Grayson 7-0. The Longhorns are back in the Metro PCS Corky Kell Classic looking for a win over 2010 Class AAAA champion Chattahoochee. Talent wasn’t an issue last season for Kell and it shouldn’t be this year

either. The Longhorns’ defensive secondary is led by Brendan Langley and Quincy Mauger, two players who will be teammates this season and SEC foes next year at South Carolina and Georgia, respectively. Look for both Mauger and Langley to also play some wide receiver as Kell searches for playmakers on offense. Julian Burris is back on offense. Derek Cook took Kell to its best-ever season in 2010 and he hopes to top that mark in 2012. Chattahoochee has been impressive of late under head coach Terry Crowder, going 25-2 over the last two seasons with a state title. The Cougars will look to challenge for a Class AAAAAA title with dual-threat quarterback Travis Marshall leading the way. Marshall started all 12 games one season ago and he had a tremendous spring according to his coach, put-ting on muscle before his senior season. Marshall will be helped out by Chase Nelson and C.J. Leggett out of the backfield. Defensively, the Cougars will be paced by linebacker Brian Sykes and cornerback Justin Jackson. Sykes stands 6-foot-2, 200 pounds and Crowder said the team looks to him for leadership, as only three starters return from last season’s defense. Cook and Crowder both bring plenty to the table as each has taken his respective program to new heights. Chattahoochee will look to the Metro PCS Corky Kell Classic as a crucial starting point as the Cougars move up to the state’s highest classification. If Chattahoochee can earn a victory here, look for the Cougars to make some noise in Class AAAAAA. If Kell can snag a victory, perhaps it will ease the pain of last year’s near miss and set the Longhorns up for an extended playoff run in Class AAAAA.

The Grayson Rams own the longest winning streak in the state after going 15-0 en route to the Class AAAAA state title one year ago. The Rams got off on the right foot last season when a 7-0 win over Kell ignited the magical run. The Rams return nearly all of its defense from one year ago including the top recruit in the nation, Robert Nkemdiche. The future

Clemson Tiger was a beast at defensive end all last season, but he was also featured as an unstoppable short-yardage back whenever Mickey Conn needed it. Nkemdiche will be joined on the defense by Jack Banda, David Kamara, Ryan Carter and Zach Barnes. The unit is littered with BCS-caliber players other than just Nkemdiche. Offensively, running back Wayne Gallman will makeQB David McTier’s job easier. Gallman stands 6-foot-1 and is a blur out of the backfield. Don’t be surprised to see Nkemdiche in there near the goal line snagging a carry, and likely a touchdown if he gets the ball. He is hard to stop once he gets going. McEachern lost some talent one year ago but should return to the Corky Kell Classic with plenty of firepower capable of ending Grayson’s streak. The Indians’ strength starts on the offensive line with Maryland pledge JuJuan Dulaney standing at tackle and Sherrod Pittman inside at center. Head coach Kyle Hockman called Pittman the offense’s “fireplug.” Trent Thompson has departed at quarterback, but look for Ty Griffin and Ty Clemons to perhaps split some time at quarterback. Defensively, McEachern will bring an entirely new unit with just Kell Parham back at his linebacker/defensive back spot. Look for the Indians to play a bend-don’t-break style of defense that could lead to some special things in the playoffs for this team, according to the Indians coach. Conn and Hockman both know how to prepare an offense, and the two coaches manning the sidelines will have plenty of weapons at their ready for this classic Metro PCS Corky Kell showdown.

The Peachtree Ridge Lions and Camden County Wildcats are no strangers to the Corky Kell Classic, but each will hope an early win kickstarts a successful 2012. Peachtree Ridge lost several outstanding playmakers from 2011 including Ray Buchanan Jr., Alex Gray, D’Aron Hill, Billy Best and Diandre Atwater, but head coach Mark Fleetwood still has some studs

on the Suwanee campus. Tony Porter will anchor the defensive line with Dorian Pogman and Devin Davidson backing him up at linebacker. Look for Myron Burton to make plays from the secondary. On offense, Walden Davis and Jordan Ellis have looked strong at running back according to Fleetwood as the Lions look to find Atwater’s replacement. The two key pieces on offense will likely be Joe Horn Jr. at wide receiver and Orlando Brown on the offensive line. Brown and Daniel Stephens form a very sturdy offensive line which the coaching staff believes is a strength. Camden County brings a plethora of talent to the Georgia Dome for the Metro PCS Corky Kell Classic. Brice Ramsey leads the offense from the quarterback spot, and the future Georgia Bulldog has an arm that is always ready to fire. He passed for over 1,300 yards with 17 scores in a run-based offense. J.J. Green will join Ramsey in the backfield and will eventu-ally join him in Athens. Green finished with 912 yards and 13 touchdowns in 2011, and he is a threat on special teams as well. Those two offensive threats do most of their work behind an offensive line anchored by Mikey Call at center and J.P. Vonashek, who will likely miss time early in the season following shoulder surgery. Defensively, Rafael Hardee and Jarrad Davis rule the field from the linebacker position, but Davis may not play as he recovers from a broken leg. Look for Green to perhaps play some defensive back for the Wildcats. Camden County head coach Jeff Herron has taken the Wildcats to great heights during his time in Kingsland. If he can engineer a win over the Lions, the Wildcats could find them-selves in the middle of a special season.

In a rematch of last year’s Class AAAAA second-round showdown, Colquitt County will once again travel to the Atlanta area to face North Gwinnett. Last season, the Packers defeated the Bulldogs 17-7 before advancing to the semifinals. Colquitt County is hoping to once again take down North Gwinnett, and this time go even further in the playoffs.

The Packers are led offensively by Cole Segraves at quarterback, though junior backup Daniel Mobley has also seen plenty of action this summer after playing some last season. Segraves will be the starter for Rush Propst, and look for the senior to throw the ball all over the field as is typical of a Propst offense. He will be looking for Bobby Hill as well as Kishaun Taylor and junior tight end Colby Reneker. Up front, Octavious Jackson blows people off the ball. The Colquitt County staff is hoping to play much faster this season. Defensively, look for Jackson to get in on a few plays to rush the passer while Hill will be out at cornerback, a position he will play at Ole Miss. North Gwinnett head coach Bob Sphire has weathered a “critical” offseason where coaches have left the program to take head coaching jobs. He is also trying to replace several key pieces of his offense including the quarterback position. Scotty Hosch is now in the Ivy League, leaving quarterbacks Michael Haynes and Hayden Sphire to battle it out all summer for the job. Whichever quarterback is under center will benefit from a dominating offense line anchored by Alex Stoehr and Devondre Seymour. Defensively, look for Donnie Miles to once again play like a monster in the secondary. Miles saw time on offense the last two seasons, but he is more of a threat to the opponent at safety. The two coaches bring excellent pedigrees to the Corky Kell Classic with each finding great success outside of Georgia in addition to great success coaching in the Peach State. Both are after their first GHSA state title, so expect both coaches to go hard after a win in hopes it triggers a successful season.

The Walton Raiders and Brookwood Broncos have helped close out the last two GHSA football seasons in the Georgia Dome with Brookwood claiming the 2010 Class AAAAA title and Walton falling in last year’s final. Both teams are looking to get off on the right track as they seek the first Class AAAAAA title.

Walton returns a boatload of talent on the offensive side of the ball with three players headed to SEC programs. Quarterback Parker McLeod can wing it, and he has shown tremendous growth since the end of last season at camps and in spring practice that has Walton coaches thinking of how good he can do under center. Tyren Jones was named the 2011 Class AAAAA offensive player of the year by several services he presented during his first season with Walton. He will once again tote the mail for the Raiders before heading to Alabama with McLeod. Up front, UGA pledge Brandon Kublanow will open holes for Jones and keep McLeod vertical. Defensively, the Raiders must replace the Blaylock twins, but DJ Smith has proven to be quite capable in the secondary, and he could also see some time at wide receiver. Brookwood has several holdovers from the 2010 team including senior offensive lineman Adam Ledford. He will pave the way up front for running backs Jamaal Cole and Josh Brown. Those two backs will help ease some of the pressure on the very athletic Zach Moon at quarterback. When Moon wants to go to the air, he can look for Kyrin Priester, a 6-foot-2 monster who possesses the ability to make defenders miss in the open field. Defensively, Brookwood is led by linebacker/end Shaun McGee, who can get to the quarterback. The 6-foot-3, 236-pound senior has committed to Georgia and will lead a stout de-fense that also features Afolabi Laguda at defensive back. These two coaches also bring a great deal to the table with Brookwood’s Mark Crews owning a state title and Walton’s Rocky Hidalgo proving to be one of the state’s best young coaches. Expect the chess match between these two to play well into the fourth quarter.
