Metro PCS Corky Kell Classic celebrates 20 years with television, four great matchupsFor the second year in a row, it will be

county against county in the Metro PCS Corky Kell Classic. In fact, the same eight power programs from last year’s Classic will take part in this year’s event as well. Only one rematch is on the docket, however, as Gray-son and Kell butt heads in the opening game.

HUMBLE BEGINNINGS … The Classic began in 1992 when Brook-wood and McEachern got together in the first football game ever played in the Georgia Dome. The two teams kicked it off before the Falcons or any college teams hit the field in the new stadium. Both teams have taken part in every one of the Classics. “This is the 20th anniversary of the game and we’ve been in it every time,” said Brook-wood coach Mark Crews. “I don’t think it ever gets to be a stale place to play. It’s always an exciting place for us to play. It’s been an honor for us to be in there for the past 20 years.” Last year was the first county vs. county showdown, as Cobb and Gwinnett went head-to-head in downtown Atlanta. Gwinnett won three of the games, as Kell was the lone win-ner for Cobb. Players and coaches love opening at the Dome, as it is easy to stay motivated over the long, hot summer with the Kell Classic wait-ing at the end of the tunnel. “It’s a great opening venue for a high school kid to get a chance to play his open-ing game in the Georgia Dome, particularly

if you’re a senior,” said North Gwinnett coach Bob Sphire. The event is by invitation, as only select programs from the state are considered to open their seasons in the Dome. But it means even more for one particular school. “It’s a great honor to play in this particular event, seeing as how it’s in honor of the same man that our school is named after,” said Kell coach Derek Cook. “It’s great for the Kell fam-ily, it’s great for Kell High School.” While the Classic has been a boon for at-tendance in the stadium, fans from around the state have not had the opportunity to watch the games live until now. This year, Georgia Public Broadcasting is televising the event for viewers in the entire state to see. It’s the first time the Classic has been televised. “For 20 years now, the Metro PCS Corky Kell has been the official kickoff of the foot-ball season,” said GPB Sports Director and Score Atlanta President/Founder I.J. Rosen-berg. “It is a tremendous day with eight of the best schools in the state involved, and for the first time we will be putting them on state-wide television. We feel with the games go-ing on TV and the new relationship between GPB Sports and the Metro PCS Corky Kell Classic, these games will become one of the premier high school events in the country.” COUNTY PRIDE … While each team today will first and fore-most be playing for themselves, they will keep

an eye on the other games in the Classic and pull for their county brethren to do them proud. “We certainly root for the Cobb Coun-ty teams,” said Lassiter coach Jep Irwin. “When Kell won last year, that was great. We want to do our share for Cobb County. We’re mostly focused on our game, but af-ter our game is over, we certainly root for the Cobb teams.” Gwinnett has a unique situation in Class AAAAA, as two regions are full of just Gwinnett County schools. While the programs are at each oth-ers’ throats in region play, they re-spect each other a great deal. “We work our butts off to beat each other but outside of our coun-ty, we take a lot of pride in rep-resenting our county and league well,” said Crews. “It’s a pretty good matchup with Gwinnett and Cobb in the Corky Kell games because we take a lot of pride in our football and they do too.” But despite the on-field battles, the most impressive part of the Clas-sic may be charity: the event has raised more than $60,000 for the Corky Kell Scholarship Fund. The Broncos and Trojans will square off today in the first-ever meeting between the two schools. Brookwood looks to build on last year’s Class AAAAA state title while second-year Lassiter head coach Jep Irwin will try to lead the Trojans back to the postseason for the fourth straight year. “There’s always a level of excitement for the first game, but getting to play in the Georgia Dome in the Kell Classic takes it up another two or three levels,” said Irwin. Last season’s victory over Walton jump-started Brook-wood’s state championship season, the first in head coach Mark Crews’ career after two previous championship game ap-pearances. The Broncos will have to replace quarterback Ben McLane (Georgia State), linebacker Cameron Lynch (Syracuse) and offensive lineman Blake Fussell (Air Force), but return run-ning back Nick Tompkins (committed to Michigan State) and de-fensive back Zach Jackson (committed to Illinois). Cobb County power Lassiter will try to end Brookwood’s 12-game winning streak. Junior Eddie Printz may be the best quarterback in the state, as he threw for over 2,100 yards and 21 touchdowns last year. Printz’s top target is Charlie Hegedus, a North Carolina State commit-ment who has been clocked at 4.4 in the 40-yard dash. Last season, Hegedus had 675 yards receiving and caught nine touchdown passes. “Charlie is a guy who can get down the field for us and make a lot of plays,” said Irwin. “He and Eddie have a pretty good relationship as far as developing on-field chemistry.”

Grayson and Kell provided the most exciting game in last year’s Classic – a 13-10 Longhorn win – and the two teams will take another shot at each other today. “I don’t know that Grayson knew who Kell was last year, and maybe a lot of people didn’t,” said Kell head coach Derek Cook. “We’re kind of a newer school and they’ve had some deeper playoff runs than we have. They’re a great football program and we’re trying to become that.” After the season-opening upset last year, Kell rattled off 11 more victories before losing to Statesboro in the Class AAAA quarterfinals. The Longhorns bring a 16-game regular season winning streak into today, but have to replace some important pieces from last year’s team if they want to duplicate that success. Gone is the dynamic backfield combination of run-ning back Brian Randolph and quarterback Austin Petrik, and their production will be hard to replace. Despite losing the 2010 opener, Grayson ad-vanced further in the playoffs than Kell, losing to Colquitt County in the semifinals. The Rams return perhaps their most athletic player from last year’s team in defensive lineman Robert Nkemdiche. Still only a junior, Nkemdiche is projected to be one of the top recruits in the nation in 2013 af-ter recording 18 sacks as a sophomore.

North Gwinnett and McEachern both lost in the second round of the playoffs last year and are eager to get back on the field in this year’s Corky Kell Classic. The Bulldogs have been rebuilding during the preseason, having lost all of their starting offensive line-men and most of their secondary and receiving corps. New starting QB Scotty Hosch will be key in leading the offense and is joined by Norcross transfer WR Chris Bold-en. The Bulldogs’ 3-5 defense, however, is formidable, with a solid defensive front returning and extensive experience at the linebacker position. Handling the environment and quality of play they’re go-ing to face will be the toughest part of the game for the inex-perienced team, according to head coach Bob Sphire. “I think McEachern’s athleticism is gonna be tough to handle,” he said. The McEachern Indians, meanwhile, have some very strong players in their pistol offense, including three-year starter WR Amba Etta-Tawo (committed to Maryland) and OL Kofi Amichia (committed to South Florida). They have lost key players TE Rory Anderson and LB Marcquise Roberts, who both signed with South Carolina. “North Gwinnett’s a really good program” said head coach Kyle Hockman. “They do a good job of spreading the ball around. We just have to be able to handle that. We’ll be preparing all the way to game time.”

This will be the first time the Peachtree Ridge Lions and Walton Raiders have faced off, despite both being reg-ular playoff teams in Class AAAAA. Peachtree Ridge, still a young school, shared the state title in 2006 in only its fourth year of existence. In 2008 they beat Grayson in overtime to make the finals again, where they lost to Camden County. Their postseason success continued until last year, when the Lions missed the playoffs for the first time since 2005 with a 6-4 record. With a brand-new head coach, last year’s offensive coordinator Mark Fleet-wood, the Lions are hoping to get back on top. The Raiders, while lacking a state title, did make it to the playoffs last year, losing in the first round to Norcross. Many of the starters on last year’s team are back, giving Walton considerable experience in their pro-style offense with players like senior OL Harrison Davis, WR Cody Richardson and QB Parker McCloud. Running back Tyren Jones transferred in from Las-siter to give the Raiders another weapon on offense. While Walton is armed with experience, Peachtree Ridge’s change in leadership pres-ents a unique challenge. “They have a new coach, so we don’t know what they’re gonna be doing on offense or defense,” said head coach Rocky Hidalgo.
