Editorial

Most people will know that filming took place in the Village during April. The German broadcast company ZDF and Austria’s ORF have begun shooting a new television movie called Inspector Jury, based on the detective mysteries written by American author Martha Grimes. The film script is written by Günter Knarr, based on the fictional character Richard Jury, an English chief Inspector. Inspector Jury is produced by Crazy Film and Epo Film for the two networks and began shooting in Corfe and other locations, including Kingston, in Purbeck in April. A broadcast date has not yet been set, but the CVN will try to keep you all informed of progress. There was quite a lot of disruption in the Village, so let’s hope it proves worth it in terms of exposure and publicity. If this first film is successful there should be a series to follow with more action in Corfe. If you have any comments do let the Parish Council know.

Thank you to everyone who has sent in donations; we do rely on your contributions for the publication of the CVN, so if you have not yet sent anything in the envelopes distributed with the April edition please consider doing so Stephen

NEWS FROM CHURCH KNOWLE PARISH COUNCIL The weeks since the monthly meeting of the Council on 12th March were quite busy for the Parish Council. Because “copy date” for CVN is the 15th of each month, it was not possible, until now, to report 2 further meetings which took place during March. There was a special meeting at Furzebrook village hall on 18th March to discuss proposals by Purbeck District Council to alter the boundaries of parishes in their district as a result of requirements put on them by the Boundary Commission to ensure that Tyneham parishioners hold a Parish Meeting at least once a year! Bit difficult donchyathink, eh? Tyneham – remember, a dead village with no inhabitants apart from a few ghosts, various cows, sheep and other animals Anyway, as a result of the quango’s inflexibility, and failure by the legislation drafters at Westminster, PDC has had to review parish boundaries. Various suggestions had been made, including amalgamating Tyneham with Steeple and then suggesting to the Parishioners of Steeple and Church Knowle that, perhaps, they might like to join up and have a single parish council. There was also a suggestion that the inhabitants of Orchard Hill might be placed in Corfe Castle parish; quite a sensible idea considering that to get to Orchard Hill you have to go through Corfe unless, of course, you own a tractor or helicopter. However, you’d then have to pay extra on the parish precept part of your council tax for street lighting you don’t have. There were also suggestions from PDC that parts of Steeple Parish could join East Holme parish, and parts of Corfe near Glebe could join Church Knowle. Does this perhaps, dear reader, remind one a little of musical chairs without the prize at the end? The ideas put forward as examples of what could happen were discussed with Parishioners and Public at the meeting, and the Democratic Services Officer from PDC gave a good presentation on the “whys and wherefores” of the boundary changes. She was ably assisted by our District Councillor Nick Cake who came up with some of his own ideas. What came out of the meeting was that anyone at all can suggest parish boundary changes as long as they consult all those who may be affected. Wool, for example, may be taking on other parishes and forming a larger joint parish council. The same could be said of Bere. Poor old Bloxworth might even be wiped off the face of the Earth (well the map anyway) despite them having a parish hall and social club. So, Church Knowle, Tyneham, Corfe and Steeple are not alone in having the magnifying glasses of the Boundaries Commission peering down on them from high. Following an open discussion, and excellent question and answer session, Cllr Parker thanked Vanessa from PDC, and the discussion amongst Councillors, Parishioners and the

10

Public continued for some time. It was decided that the suggestions made during the meeting would be mulled over and then be discussed at the April meeting – more of this later. The special meeting then ended. Just two days later came another meeting. This time, a planning meeting took place at Church Knowle reading room to discuss an urgent tree works application and the Council’s response to the Dorset Heathland Development Proposals Consultation paper. Following a report from Cllrs Parker and Bugler on the trees concerned, Members agreed that they had no objections to the proposed works, which included pollarding and reducing heights and felling and replacement. With regard to the Heathland consultation, there was general agreement that this was yet another example of urban-based bureaucrats thinking up yet another type of bedroom tax and not taking into account the differences between rural and urban communities with regard to land use. The authors seemed to be unaware of how several areas of what was deemed to be Dorset Heath had actually ceased be such since the 1930s when they were structurally converted to farmland by breaking the iron pan and podsol. Councillors were given a copy of a report prepared by a specialist professor for Arne PC which came to the same conclusions as those of CKPC. The response from the Council would be very much in line with that of Arne and the professor. The April meeting returned to Furzebrook and all Members were in attendance. There had been an application from a Parishioner to fill the vacant Parish Council seat and, following the routine business in which declarations of interest were made, minutes of the previous meetings read and approved and matter arising discussed, the Clerk advised that the requisite formalities had been fulfilled regarding the vacancy and it was proposed that Mrs Elizabeth Edwards be co-opted as the ninth Member of the CK Parish Council. This was unanimously agreed and Billa will now be Cllr Billa Edwards. Parishioners should note that all Councillors, including Billa, will have to re-affirm their acceptance to continue as Councillors at the AGM next month. Cllr Edwards having been co-opted, the remainder of the meeting continued. Members confirmed the decisions made at the planning meeting of 20th March and then discussed new items. The saga of the Caravans at Creech Bottom continues and the Clerk advised Members that, following further research by him, he had discovered that the caravans were actually in Arne parish. Councillors decided that whilst Arne should be involved – and the Chairman of that parish would be informed – CK should continue pursuing the removal of the caravans from the field. The district council would also continue to be “nagged”.

During “Past Planning”, Councillors wondered why so many applications appear to be “undetermined” by the PDC planners. Cllr Parker advised that she had found out from attending a PDC - Parish Chairmen liaison meeting that planning rules say there should always be a presumption of passing planning applications unless there were adequate reasons for not doing so. Enquiries would be made as to why planners are taking so long despite them insisting that the backlog is, apparently, “reducing”. Cllr Parker read out an article from the ‘Dorset for You’ DCC newspaper regarding the operation of the Highways Department during the inclement weather and its supposed ability to respond to complaints, and its triaging system. There was some hilarity about the time-scales quoted in the paper and the Clerk told Members he had had a long talk with DCC and they had advised him that work was now in hand to carry out all the repairs asked for by CKPC, of which some had been reported over a year ago. The precept had not yet been paid to CKPC by PDC but the Clerk had been advised that the money would be in the Parish Council’s coffers by the following Monday. Councillor were pleased. Finances were in good shape and bills were paid. The Clerk advised Members that the internal auditor had agreed to act again this year and that the annual accounts for 2012-13 were in preparation for him to audit, the Council to agree and sent to the external auditor for the arguments to begin! The tender for the Furzebrook notice board had been accepted and the contractor instructed. There was then a discussion about the tatty, shared board at Grange Road. It was suggested that a quote be requested for a part-locked board so that the CK side could be locked to prevent unauthorised advertising by tarmacing and double glazing businesses on its side whilst allowing Arne to continue with its unlocked board. The review of boundary changes discussed at the special public meeting came up and following lengthy discussion Councillors unanimously decided to leave things as they were and not make suggestions to PDC. They decided to leave the matter up to the District Council to decide and let it pay the bill for administration rather than the good parishioners of Church Knowle. “If it ain’t broke, why fix it?”, as one of the Councillors said. During general matters it was reported that there had been night shooting in and around the heathland of the Parish. No, we’re not talking about the “kerruphwhoooofff” now heard regularly coming from the Lulworth area, and scaring the wits out of dogs, etc at night and most afternoons. No! This is about “culling” and even possible poaching of deer. One of the Councillors reported that a neighbour was walking in Creech Heath during broad daylight one day and heard two high speed bullets swish past her ear. (And as far as we know there hasn’t a mafia contract out on anyone in Purbeck for some

13

time). Now how’s that for a scary moment. But variously though, dear reader, there appears to be uncontrolled discharging of lethal weapons in the area and if anyone hears or suspects unauthorised shooting they MUST tell the police by dialling 999 if necessary. If they see anything suspicious such as vans being where they shouldn’t be they should do the same without delay. Councillors are very concerned that one day someone’s going to get killed. Councillors think that the shooting is probably being done by poachers because proper removal of carcasses and running down and “dispatching” of injured animals is not being carried out since dogs on walks are often disappearing only to come back carrying half-decomposed legs and other bits and pieces, etc of deer. Councillors were also concerned that deer culling high seats have recently been built with lines of fire going across public footpaths allowing walkers to be in the line of fire of high velocity bullets! Councillor Parker then reported on the meeting of parish council chairmen she had attended. There is a new refuse collection service about to be launched where there will be weekly waste food collections and bi-weekly general refuse and recycling collections. There will also be a garden waste collection service which will be charged for. This raised some discussion amongst Members, including “Whatever happened to compost heaps?” and “Interesting that they charge for removing garden waste which they then compost and sell back to us”. My, my, what a cynical bunch we are. Anyway, that was that for April’s meeting. The next meeting will be at Church Knowle village hall on Tuesday 14th May immediately following the ANNUAL Parish Meeting which begins at 7.00p.m. Parishioners are also reminded that there will be local PDC elections on 2nd May.

An annual survey of Purbeck National Trust volunteers reveals the many and varied activities they have been getting up to in the last 12 months. In Purbeck we are lucky enough to have around 250 regular volunteers, supplemented last year by more than 150 others who helped out occasionally or on a one-off basis.External groups, including Purbeck School, other schools and col-leges and employers, brought a further 600 to join the party, mostly on one-off tasks in the countryside. Guests on working holidays in Purbeck carried out a total of 840 hours.

Between them, this small but dedicated army gave more than 30,000 hours of their time over the course of a year. The largest group comprised the countryside volun-teers, who last year numbered about 120 and notched up a combined total of more than 10,000 hours. Their largely unseen work helps protect important habitats like Purbeck heathland and increases our knowledge of the animals and plants which live there. They also ensure the countryside is a place everyone can enjoy by maintaining paths and stiles and support our rangers in general countryside management tasks.Other volunteers help welcome our visitors to Studland Beach and Corfe Castle. Still others work in education, passing on specialist knowledge of everything from birds and insects to medieval history. And it doesn’t stop there. We have handy people,

volunteer. Volunteers are vital to the work of the National Trust. In 2011/12 theycontributed four million hours nationwide – equivalent to £33.6 million. Without them, we simply wouldn’t be able to continue the work we were founded to do – looking after special places for ever, for everyone.Becoming a National Trust volunteer in Purbeck can be as easy as coming along to one of our regular monthly drop-in sessions. There’s no commitment, and you can stay for an hour or all day if you want to.Meanwhile, we are currently on the lookout for the following:

handy people,

for sale,

skills such as tractor driving,-

tre.Whichever role you choose, you can be sure of a warm welcome, the chance to meet new people and be part of a team, and the knowledge that you are supporting a worth-while cause. To apply for any of the roles above, or for more information about volunteering in-cluding drop-in sessions, please contact Rachel Rodman on 01929-452306 or [email protected]

Corfe Castle Community Library SAVED !!!

Corfe Castle Library has been given a new lease of life. After months of negotiations and many meetings, Dorset County Council has agreed that the Friends of CorfeCastle Community Library can take over the running of the library. In a recent DCC cabinet meeting the business plan submitted by the management team of Corfe Castle Community Library was accepted. CCCL is the last of the 8 Dorset libraries threatened with closure to be taken over by their community.

Chair person of the Friends Alison Allwright says: ‘As well as retaining a valuable service for the village and surrounding area, we have exciting plans for the Corfe Castle Community Library as a social hub for the future’. Our corner stone of reading and literacy will remain. And we are building up links with our local schools and other social groups in the community. But we also want to develop the scope of the library as an information exchange, both for local events and information technology.

To make this library a friendly place, we will soon start serving refreshments, so people can meet their friends and neighbours for a cup of tea or coffee and a chat. And other social events are also being planned, among them a Celebration Party on the 9th May 2013 for the Friends and Volunteers, 2 – 5 pm, at the library. Anybody wanting to join please get in touch with Alison (01929 480123).

From THE VILLAGE PUMP!

Corfe Castle

Did you know? Have you heard? YOU ARE HERE! ………. Visitors to the Village, and residents, often take a stroll, invariably making a B-line to the Square, where, close to the Village Pump, they study the very attractive and informative pictorial Village Map – drawn by Ron Burniston. It doesn’t actually say ‘You are Here’ but they are certainly in the centre of everything. They may also have passed by Burniston Cottage, in West Street and perhaps purchased a copy of the Historical Map, based on the 1902 Ordnance Survey Map, on sale in St. Edward’s Church. This features artwork by Ron Burniston. In the regular pages of the CVN, you will have noticed sketches of the Valley Churches, courtesy of …. guess who – Ron Burniston! The late Ron Burniston certainly left his name and a lot of goodwill in the local community. It was 3 years ago this month, that he died and is at rest in God’s Acre. Testament to his lifestyle, words on the gravestone read: ‘Ronald George Burniston, 26 April 1920 – 13 May 2010, Corfe Castle Benefactor, Aircraft Engineer, Diver and Artist’. Ron, a single man, arrived in Corfe Castle in

1986, on retirement from his profession with De Havilland as an aero engineer. To quote a few recollections of Ron from a fellow resident: ‘Ron immediately made an impact, riding an ancient bicycle down the Village. He had many hobbies, including going with Tony Brown to look for archaeological finds. Many people in the Village will remember Ron appealing to them for a small amount of paint, clay, etc. for one of his projects! Ron sent missives to the Parish Council, regarding noisy heli-copters and to DCC with ideas for a bypass! In later years, it was Scrabble, which gave him much happiness’. DISCOVERY WALKS? …....... Many Village Organisations benefitted from his Will. He involved himself in all walks of Corfe Castle community life. Amongst the beneficiaries, was the Corfe Castle Charity (CCC). CVN readers are aware of this Organisation, through the promotional page in the magazine. It is a continuity of the Corfe Castle Charities, which had their origins in 1610 with a Gift from Robert Abbot. The various Charities are now combined and administered by

33

Trustees under one umbrella, hence the name, CC Charity. In 1864, the Victorians erected the prominent board in the Baptistry of St. Edward’s Church. This makes interesting reading of recognizable names! The income of the CCC comes mainly from the rents of the bequeathed property. Donations and bequests are always welcome, for the benefit of Corfe Castle residents. The CCC has approximately 30 residential properties in Corfe Castle, to the delight of their occupants. Many of these are appropriately named, including Abbots Cottages, opened by HRH The Prince of Wales, 20th April 1998. Parade Cottage, on East Street, recognizes past history of that area, being the former Militiary Parade Ground of past ages, or so we are told. Others include Uvedale Court and Gascoigne Flats. The property, built in 1677, named Jubilee House, was suitably restored in 1977 during the year of Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee. St. Edward’s Close – a 20th Century building, needs no explanation! Now, my reference to Burniston Cottage, nextdoor but one to Culliford Cottage in West Street, makes sense. The house recently named, is in appreciation of Ron Burniston’s generosity. As you enjoy your strolls around the Village, in the lovely weather that we have been promised?! – maybe you will recognize names with connections, revealing Corfe Castle’s interesting

history. Do let us know what you discover or put any queries to us! During the months ahead, no doubt gardens will need a lot of your constant attention! Ron’s idea would have been a money spinner (see sketch): ‘The Faring Flyer’ (Faring being the name of Ron’s house.) I am most grateful to Joan Dunne for the loan of her ‘File on Ron’! – a treasure trove which speaks volumes of Ron’s talent and humour. It is from this file, that we reproduce the sketch. Often, on route home, Ron would pop in to see Joan for a coffee and a quick challenge at Scrabble. CORFE CASTLE 2000 …….. I am always referring to this Village Diary and I make no excuse for it! Turn to page March 20th for an interesting, illustrated story by Ron, about his working model of the Belfry and Tower at St. Edward’s Church. SMILEY FACES! …………… Regular readers, Gwen and Paul Cox, have sent me this interesting item for these pages. Gwen Cox,

former resident of Corfe Castle, of the Nineham family, and her husband, Paul, had a smile on their faces, with a 1950’s memory. Quote: ‘We were interested to read of your meeting with Brian Johnson (March CVN 2013). Let me tell you a story - he was responsible for Paul’s purchase of a motor bike! – a story often related. On August Bank Holiday Monday in 1955, Jill Stockley (now Beavis) and I, were waiting at the South Street, Wareham bus stop, for the bus back home to Corfe Castle. Paul and his mate, from across the other side of the road, were eyeing the girls. Their intended dash across the road was maddeningly impeded by the blockage of slow moving traffic. At the very point of being able to make it, Brian pulled up on his Norton – I climbed on the back, whizzed off! I can’t remember what happened to Jill! That was the last straw, enough for Paul. The next

Saturday, he purchased a motor bike. The following month, we coincidentally met at a Dancing Class and a year later, in 1956, we married. In 2006, we celebrated our Golden Wedding at Morton’s House Hotel, like Brian and his wife did this year. Brian’s parents were in service at Morton’s House, as was my mother, Queenie Nineham - that’s how I knew Brian and got the lift home on his motorbike.’ Lovely story, Gwen – thank you – all at your service! The Reverend Anne Bond writes:

Today this country’s longest serving Prime Minister and only female Head of State was buried. Not since Winston Churchill’s funeral has any politician enjoyed such pomp and ceremony at their life’s end. Baroness Thatcher was buried with full military honours as befitted a stateswoman who had taken her country to war. Her coffin was paraded on a gun-carriage in a procession so long it took half-an-hour to describe, and the funeral service was held in St. Paul’s Cathedral.

I know the procession took half-an-hour to describe because I listened to it as I drove from Corfe Castle to my mother’s house near Dorchester. As I arrived the coffin was being carried up the twenty-four steps to the Cathedral. My sisters and I have for the past two days been clearing out the house after my mother’s death in early January; I found them watching the service on television surrounded by forty-six bulging dustbin bags labelled Charity Shop, Recycling or Rubbish. My mother’s funeral service had been on the day of the worst snow here. The church was in a tiny hamlet on a hill the far side of a working farmyard; springs rose on the hill so the path to the church was ankle deep in water, and the hill itself was not much better being well over ankle deep in soft snow. The little church was packed, and all the congregation had to wear wellies, including the clergy. It could hardly have been more different from Lady Thatcher’s obsequies.

Funerals are for the benefit of those who are left behind. Although whatever happens after death has long taken place by that time, the service is the occasion when we commit our loved one to the infinite compassion and care of a God who is love itself. It is important to relatives and friends to make the funeral a good send-off; it helps the grieving process of the family, and goes some way towards them being able to move on in the absence of their beloved family member. A funeral is, therefore, an act of love for all concerned, whether it’s a televised national occasion with a cast of thousands, or a small private affair with circumstances dictating everything being a bit improvised.

Jesus told us that after ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart’ the most important commandment is ‘Love your neighbour as yourself’; then, in the parable of the Sheep and the Goats, showed us that to ‘love your neighbour as yourself’ is to love God. The love we show each other at a funeral service reflects the love of God; whatever the circumstances of our life’s journey through this fallen world, God is with us in our pain, in the love of family and friends as well as in the still small voice at the centre of our being telling us we are not alone. Help us, Lord, to recognise you when we need you, to know your presence in our life.

With love, Anne.

Dear friends On the 19th of this month we remember that God fulfilled one of His promises nearly 2000 years ago. After Jesus had ascended back into heaven God the Holy Spirit came to live with those true believers here on earth. This is Pentecost, also known as Whitsun, where God first empowered His Christian Church. But remember, what is inside will usually appear on the outside. The virus will produce the temperature and the spots, those political views come out and are put into practice at the ballot box, the ‘eye for the ball’ is seen by the way the runs are made, the IQ shows in the GCSE certificate. All true Christians (those who have consciously changed the direction of their lives to follow Jesus Christ) have the Holy Spirit living inside them. He (not ‘it’) has His effects – the girl with the temper just walks calmly away from the conflict; the man, once proud, humbly apologises; the macho teenager gently consoles the distressed child; the old lady refuses to be bitter against those who hurt her.... Every Christian is full of faults, yet there is a power for change, working from within. There is an effect that time after time goes against the ‘natural’ character of that person. The Bible teaches that the indwelling Spirit is there in every Christian. The Spirit prompts and leads every Christian to become more and more like Jesus. The same Spirit can ‘come upon’ the Christian to empower him/her to tell others of the amazing grace of God amid opposition and trials. The drunk is under the influence of alcohol – the Christian is under the influence of the Holy Spirit of God. Christian, go on being filled with the Holy Spirit. As the Bible says; “He will guide you into all truth”, “Let us keep in step with the Spirit” and “Your body is [a] temple of the Holy Spirit.” Pastor Gordon Clements

Hello, my name is Baloo and I’m a very handsome three year old male Akita. I’m quite the character and I love to play and bound around having lots of fun. One of

though I’m playing football! I enjoy being outside exploring new scents and places so

I do. I can also be very affectionate; in fact people have told me I’m a bit of a cuddle monster because I do enjoy having a fuss made of me.I would like my new family to have experience of larger breeds so that we can be happy and comfortable together. I could possibly live with a female dog, and maybeeven a cat. Corfe Castle Gardening Club.

Mr Robert McGibbon gave a most interesting presentation to Club members at our meeting which took place on the 4th April 2013. His talk which was entitled “The Purbeck Coast and and Wildlife” was supported by a stunning display of

views of the “Jurassic Coast' and major points of interest right around from Poole Harbour down to Chesil Beach and beyond. Highlighted were some of the

species of not only flora and fauna but birds and butterflies one can see in the unique area in which we live. It certainly made one much more aware of some of the rare and special plants and species that can be found if one only takes the

trouble to look.

Our next meeting will take place as usual in the 1st Floor Meeting Room at the Royal British Union on Thursday evening the 2nd May 2013

at 8.00 pm. The meeting will be a short meeting to finalise and discuss the arrangements for

the Club visit to 'Spinners Garden and Nursery' and “Furzey Gardens' on the 23rd May 2013.

Members are also invited to bring along their surplus plants and produce for sale in order to support Club funds.

Langton Arthouse Cinema

This June, Langton Arthouse Cinema will bring you the Oscar-award winning “Amour”. This film tells the story of Georges and Anne, a couple of retired music teachers enjoying life in their eighties. However, Anne suddenly has a stroke at breakfast and their lives are never the same. That incident begins Anne's harrowingly steep physical and mental decline as Georges attempts to care for her at home as she wishes. Even as the fruits of their lives and career remain bright, the couple's hopes for some dignity prove a dispiriting struggle even as their daughter enters the conflict. In the end, George, with his love fighting against his own weariness and diminished future on top of Anne's, is driven to make some critical decisions for them both. In French with English subtitles. “Amour” will be shown at 7.30pm on Thursday 6 June 2013. Tickets are £5 on the door, which opens at 7.00pm. If you’d like to bring drinks, we will supply glasses. Cancer Research UK.

Our recent sale held in the Sports Pavilion raised a net total of £265.45 Thank you to all who supported the event.

Due to the retirement of Bob and Liz Richards, the present Branch Chairman and Secretary, and the absence of anyone willing to take over their roles, the sale brought to an end a relationship the village has enjoyed with Cancer Research spanning fifty eight years. The first local committee was formed in 1956 under the Chairmanship of the Reverend R. Welchman. The old records show the first jumble sale raised £46. 2. Od. Recent coffee mornings saw totals of over a thousand pounds. How times have changed! However, since those humble beginnings until the present time £155,000 has been passed by successive local committees to the main Charity to enable its research into this dreadful disease. For a small community this is a tremendous effort, but could not have been achieved without you, the community, who has come out in numbers to support the many fund raising activities. So, a huge Thank You to everyone. Equally, this total could not have been raised without much hard work by the members of the committees serving the branch over the years. They are too numerous to mention individually so, a collective Thank You to you all. Committees, however, are only as good as their leaders and, therefore, special mention should go to the late Cyril and Joanne Adams and Harry and Audrey Carter, the latter having given over fifty years service. They had control until 1994 at which time the Adams' emigrated to Australia and Harry and Audrey moved to Swanage. Although Harry and Audrey continued their involvement, replacement officers were sought.

Enter Bob and Liz Richards. They had been invited to go along to the committee meeting to 'help out'. They left with the titles Chairman and Secretary respectively, and have loyally served for eighteen years. Under their stewardship the committee has raised £100,000 of the £155,000 mentioned above. They will modestly contend it was a joint effort and although this cannot be denied, their own supreme commitment and dedication was the example for the rest to follow. Bob and Liz have worked tirelessly on behalf of the Charity and have willingly given many, many hours of their time in every conceivable way to make the group the success it has been. With our very grateful thanks, we wish them well for the future.

Our bank account will remain open to receive monetary donations via the Treasurer, Jim Rosewarn, on 480405.

So much to celebrate, 25 years, three new flavours and a shiny new Award!

03/13

Purbeck Ice Cream is celebrating 25 years in business making entirely natural ice creams

and sorbets, the launch of three innovative new flavours all made with Dorset ingredients and winning the Fresh Ideas Award for the best out of home grocery innovation for one of the new flavours – Dorset Blue Vinny Ice Cream!

25 years ago, Peter and Hazel Hartle farmed 120 acres running 60 head of Friesian cows when the government imposed milk quotas rendering the dairy farm unviable. To stay on the farm, a plan had to be formed pretty quickly and, making ice cream with milk and cream from the farm fit the bill perfectly. 25 years on, with grit determination, a dedicated and enthusiastic team and a will to succeed, Purbeck Ice Cream is available across the UK firmly putting Purbeck and Dorset on the map.

The team have recently launched three unusual new flavours after experimenting with the array of fabulous Dorset foods available and made right on our doorstep using apples, watercress and blue cheese!Apple and Cinnamon is made with apples from the farm ~ perfect alone or served with an old fashioned pud, Dorset Watercress is a natural super food grown in Waddock Cross, Dorchester tasting delicious with shredded smoked salmon and, Dorset Blue Vinny ~ an exceptional blue cheese made at Woodbridge Farm, Sturminster Newton, an intriguing taste, surprisingly good and delicious served with warm poached pears.

This particular flavour captured the attention of the judges of the Fresh Ideas Awards who presented the award and commented ‘Great provenance and story, great surprise when tasted, definitely has the wow factor, excellent!’ Chefs sampling it immediately imagined how and with what to serve it as it is incredibly versatile.

Everything is made with fun, love and passion by the small and friendly team using fresh guaranteed Purbeck milk, thick Dorset double cream, British sugar and an abundance of only the very best natural ingredients using no artificial additives, no GMOs and no added colours or nuts, everything is gluten free and suitable for vegetarians making this a Great British original indulgence that just about everyone can enjoy!
