Although there has beensome expectation that shemight have applied for theChief Medical Consultantsposition within the GFAwhen the vacancy wasopened to the public latelast year, sources close tothe GFA had alreadyindicated that she was notexpected to apply partlydue to her personalcircumstances following herdeparture from Chelsea andthe fact even GFA officialsunderstood that the re-

Still work to bedone as Gibloses heavily

Earlier in the afternoon TheGibraltar FA had announceda partnership with theWelsh FA bringing Gibraltarup to speed with coachingcertificates and courses.

Among the one thingsmentioned was agoalkeeping coachingcourse which wasdescribed as "muchneeded." Yet this was theone area on the field thathad no real need for

change.

Goalkeeper Jordan Perezonce again became thehero with some magnificentsaves in the second halfthat kept the score at 5-0,the score could have beenhigher. Yet it was notbecause Gibraltar was notat the same level as Latvia,it was because somewherebetween the end of the firsthalf and the start of thesecond half Gibraltar had

Page 23: Coresportgib issue13 31 03 2016

lost its focused, re-enteredthe match and seenthemselves go one - nildown within seconds of thesecond half kicking off, andsuddenly lost itsconfidence.

Although Latvia dominatedmost of the possession, inthe first half Gibraltar hadplayed a balanced, welldisciplined game for most ofthe first half. Gibraltar'sforwards proved once again

that they were there tocause problems. BothCabreras and Casciaro, along with Liam Walker inthe midfield pushed Latviainto a defensive posture asthey threatened in attack. With Latvia having a coupleof good chances, butnothing to what was to beseen in the second half.

Gibraltar came out achanged side. The deepruns were just not repeating

Page 24: Coresportgib issue13 31 03 2016

themselves, the midfieldseemed static in itsapproach and the frontrunners just were notgetting the balls anymore. There was a disjointedapproach to the game inwhich Latvia were pullingGibraltar apart in the flanksand trampling over them asthey criss-crossed,changing widths to strike.

Gibraltar's problemsseemed to have started in

the first half when from thetouchline players could beheard arguing amongsteach other. The Defenceargued with the front line, the midfield with thedefence. Teams shoutamong each other in normalday to day football, it isquite common place, butthe tones and theresponses were to theuninitiated of a team notcommunicating amongeach other with the clarity

Page 25: Coresportgib issue13 31 03 2016

that they had in the firstmatch.

Latvia was proving to be astern opponent from thefirst half. In the second half, with a solid defence Latviawas an impenetrableopponent, lethal in attack asthey put away five at theback of the net and saw justas many saved by goalkeeper Jordan Perez. The disunity in the Gibraltarranks, was also apparent in

the stands where onceagain the Gibraltar fans, except for a group on theeast stand, could hardly beheard. As the match nearedits last ten minutes somefans started to depart early. The vociferous support ofthe past for Gibraltarfootball seemed to be athing of the past. Just ahandful of supporters couldbe heard. At times thathandful were solely Latviansupporters whose 30 odd

strong supporters groupout-did the west stands.Few voices, cheers, orchants could be heardcoming from the weststand. A shameful sight inwhich those watching wereliterally spectators ratherthan supporters. A factorwhich forgets theimportance of homematches, where the extraplayer is always the supportfor the home team.

Gibraltar had come home, but it seems it had beenaway for far too long. The defeat against Latviawas not all negatives.

Gibraltar proved in the firsthalf that it has a solidfoundation from which tobuild on. Gibraltar's attacksdown the wing proved to beeffective and causedenough danger to pushLatvia back and takeGibraltar seriously.

Page 27: Coresportgib issue13 31 03 2016

Cabreras and Casciaroonce again showed thatthey had what it takes tocombat in the front linehead to head internationaldefenders. Liam Walkeronce again showed hecontinues to have themindset to play against anyside in midfield and still takecontrol when he has to.

Gibraltar's defence alsoproved solid for the first 45minutes. Where defenders

might have found the pacetoo fast at times, JordanPerez was there to respondwith his own heroics.

From the subs bench,Montovio, Guiling andOlivero once again showedthat there is more than justone club that can supplytalent into the squad. Payashas already shown strongcharacter alongsideChipolina, whilst Bosio,Sergeant, Barnett and

Bardon had shown whythey had been included inthe team line-ups during thetwo latest friendly matches.Gibraltar had beenunfortunate in not seeing anappearance at home of thelikes of Goldwyn who hadsustained an injury earlieron in the week duringtraining, Torilla and Powerbut who had been involvedin the 31 man squadstructure increasing thepressure on established

internationals to maintain ahigher level to keep theirpositions.

Gibraltar is not used to theprolonged internationalweekends experienced thisEaster. A time when playerstake a back step to enjoy abreak with families saw a31 man squad put throughtheir paces instead andplaced under the spot light.Thrown straight into theEuro qualifiers after joining

the second and third goal, the scoreline by half timegave the impressionHercules were an easyopponent, which was farfrom the reality.

Although many a timeplaying on the back footHercules were unlucky notto score in the first half asthey saw the ball strike thepost and cross bar onseveral occasions.

Easter Sunday saw theTercentenary Sports Hallfull of action in the newlycreated GFA Futsal X-plodeTrophy Tournament.

Two categories were playedout, Seniors and Under 21,with teams from both theleagues and those justwanting to take part, but notregistered players wantingto take part, competing onthe same pitch.

The tournament saw someexciting matches, withsome surprises as teamssuch as Last Place reachedthe semi-finals, and Titans(Third Division league side)reach the finals of theseniors.

The Under 21 finals wasplayed out betweenMaccabi Benchwarmersand Rock 54, the under 21development selection thatcurrently plays in the lower

divisions. Maccabi were eventualwinners in an excitingmatch in which the non-stopclock played a key role asRock 54 were only able todraw after the final buzzer, even though they had themost chances in front ofgoal. A penalty shoot-outdecided the winners, withMaccabi goalkeeperbecoming the hero as hesaved a penalty kick. The senior tournament saw

an unexpected finalist inTitans who knocked outScorpions, currently in thetop four in the first division.Scorpions, who hadknocked out St Joseph'shad started well and wereexpected to win with ease. However, Titans frustratedthe make-shift Scorpionsside who did not have all ofits main players present.Titans came out eventual 3-2 winners in the semi-finalsand went on to meet

The Third Division sideplayed the final immediatelyafter their own semi-final,with Pheonix having theadvantage of having had alonger break betweenmatches.

The faster paced Pheonix, with futsal league top scorerLedesma among their rankstook the final with easewinning 8-1 against avaliant Titans.

Following the tournamentGFA Futsal ChairmanMicheal Bonavia was quickto praise everyone who hadattended the tournamentand thanked refereesAntonio, Manolo, Danieland Abdul for giving up theirfree time to referee allmatchesand sponsors'Close to Home' for

However, in a dramatic turn,Titans came out on top inthe semi-finals against aScorpions side that had justbeaten St Joseph's to reachthe semis.

Scorpions, without some of

their keys players, underperformed at the mostcrucial time, with adisjointed team firing wellbelow their expectations asTitans took advantage towin 3-2.

Titans went on to meetPheonix in the final, justminutes after completingtheir semi-final roundagainst Scorpions, forcingthe third division team tohave to find that extra

Pheonix opened the score only tosee Titans make a comeback andscore the equaliser. The Titansreaction, and their pressure upfront forced Pheonix to up theirpace. With the first division topscorer Ledesma among their rankPheonix started to play a muchfaster paced futsal than Titans arenormally accustomed to.

Ledesma's presence causedproblems for the third division sidewho had to cover at the back allthe time with two players.Four - one up in the first half thesecond half was one way traffic asPheonix continuously used theirquick counter style, andLedesma's presence to goodeffect.

The Under 21 X-PlodeFutsal tournament sawprobably two of the bestdeveloping under 21players on the pitch asMaccabi Benchwarmersand Rock 54 reached thefinals.

The latter, known to be theunder 21 Gibraltardevelopment squad, foundthemselves behind in thefirst half as Maccabi struckin style, with a clean strikeat goal catching the youngRock 54 side out.

Maccabi covered well at theback to keep Rock 54 awayfrom goal. The latter playedin a more aggressive stylewith determination but werethwarted time and again byMaccabi's simple basic playwhich saw them defendingas a unit and using theirquick pace to take the ballinto the opponents halfwhenever they had thechance.
