Answer: Hello Chinthaka , Good question! I think you are referencing to the technet sizing references.
The sizing documented on the TechNet site are recommendations. So the numbers are not
requirements. Those numbers are tested and proof to provide optimal Lync experience for maximum
server load. You could do less, but caution is required. The Lync 2013 infrastructure is less linear in users
versus performance then Lync 2010. When you deploy less users than the maximum numbers the server
can handle you should closely monitor the performance and user experience impact. For example this
can be done during a Pilot or proof of concept.

Question: Can we have Call Back or Call Waiting Features (functionality of PBX's) in Lync 2013?
Answer: There currently is no Call Back feature in Lync. However, remember that Lync is not an exact
PBX copy. It can replace PBXes! Lync leverages Presence, this means that you know when someone
comes available again, or you could choose an alternate method of contacting that is more fitting. Call
waiting features could maybe be solved with a response group and a call queue. If these options are not
fitting, you could always look for Lycn 2013 add ons. A broad range of applications can be found here:

Answer: Great question Liolein! You can monitor Lync with a special Watcher node. Monitoring
Bandwidth usage is not a feature of the SCOM management pack as I know of. However you can deploy
Call admission control and bandwidth policies to have a grip on it. But the best way to engage
bandwidth is to plan for it using the Bandwidth calculator. More information on what the Watcher node
does you can look down here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj204943.aspx

Question: Is it possible to integrate 3rd party ISDN Video conference MCU working with LYNC 2013?
Answer: Hi Pavlos, Thank you for your great question. It is possible. However you should consider user
experience and make clear choices on where a meeting is homed on. It could be confusing for users to
join a meeting room when you have both the Lync dialin conferencing service and the MCU dialin
conferencing service running on 2 different numbers. Also from user experience perspective the Lync
2013 Meeting scheduler in Outlook only sends the Microsoft Lync conferencing Dialin phone number.
You might deploy both and make the Lync solution work from general Users. Use a support team to
prepare and host and communicate clearly about the MCU meeting for example.

internally, Via VPN, connected to WIFI or Ethernet including speed and quality of the connections.

server, I didn't find a solution to make to run, but even it's not running I don't have problem with
audio/video or share content between users when are connected to lync from external network
Answer: Replication is required to publish Topology and Policy changes. For the Edge the External access
Policy controls what you can and cannot do. Replication between the Front end server and the Edge
uses Port 4443. If you need additional help you should refer to Microsoft Support or Partner to fix it.
Hope this helps

Question: I thought i heard that TMG was being deprecated, and that people should start using UAG
instead which will keep being developped. Is UAG able to work with Lync or is only TMG able to?

solutions to replace TMG. AAR is a cheaper solution and provides Microsoft Server 2008R2 based
reverse proxying.
16:20:42 PDT

Question: Can I use private IPs on External NIC of Edge Server (2 or more) if I have LB with Public VIPs?

Hardware loadbalancing you can't use private interfaces on the edges. You are required to use External
IP addresses.
16:29:27 PDT
Question: Will the developed version for Lync 2013 Lync Security Edge filter include reverse proxy_IIS-

16:32:20 PDT
Question: Don't forget, .local names will no longer be allowed on 3rd party certs soon.
Answer: Hi Pat, Interesting subject. I have never got Public Certs accepted that way. What PKI do you

16:34:31 PDT
Question: So with the coming of public cert providers not issuing internal or local domain names on the
certs after 2015, what happens with a SE which is on local domain i.e. lab.local?
Answer: You should make a separate certificate request for the external web services. This one will be
used on the TMG.
16:35:36 PDT
Question: Most 3rd party CAs will give them to you now. But that's changing. No private names
anymore. So, putting internal server.domain.local names on certs is not going to be allowed.

Question: What is Brick model in Lync 2013? How LyncFront End service holds presence information?
How much time can the backend server be dowm? What IOPS are required from storage presepective
for Lync FE servers
Answer: Lync 2010, when in an enterprise model, more effort has been made to make the Front end self
sufficient. The front end does hold presence data for it's primary users and uses lazy writes to put the on
a second and third front end. If the front is down, conferences will start to fail very quickly, the client will
go into a failed state after 10 minutes. IO requirements on the front end are not documented outside
the disk requirements of a front end.

11:58:56 PDT
Question: What do you mean by lazy writes?
Answer: It was just a matter of time that Microsoft realised they need to loosen this FE<–>BE coupling
to get more out of Lync server. This is where the Brick Model architecture of Lync Server 2013 comes
into play. FE servers are now given the responsibility of keeping the presence information and other
changes within themselves. These changes are written back to the BE database , the process commonly
known as Lazy writes. This and the everything that follows is why hardware requirements for Lync 2013
FE servers spiked. http://unifiedme.co.uk/2013/04/lync-server-2013-front-end-architecture-process-

Question: Is director role really required in Lync 13 topology? Because FE Pool still can do redirect work
(HTTP 301 Redirect).. So why director load balancing????
Answer: The FE pool only does a 301 redirect when the user is A: not directly connected to the homed
server (pure coincidence with dns lb) or B when the user is not homed to the same pool. The 301
redirect gives both primary and backup pool information in the Contact field. The director does not carry
any performance sensitive role like audio video conferencing. Authentication requests from the internet
are done on the Director role and thus protecting the internal environment from DDOS attacks. The
Director role is a recommended role. Not required.
