SYNOPSISFour friends went to the beach for a holiday. They found the beach very dirty. So, they cleaned up the beach.

Open the book and display it (page by page).

Allow pupils to form small groups and ‘tell the story’.

Return to whole group and read the story to the children.

Show the book.

Discuss the layout, e.g. title, author, illustrator, blurb, chapters, contents, captions.

Discuss the title, the illustrations and the author.

Help pupils to recall any previous stories that have the same theme.

Talk about the theme.

In pairs pupil A reads the sentence and pupil B guesses the character (pg. 8,10).

WHILE READING

Teacher reads a passage from page 4. Pupils listen and fill in the blanks correctly.

Pupils read the sentences. Then, they write the page number in which the sentences can be found.

Replace the words underlined with pictures.

The four friends and the captain looked at the pile of

rubbish they had made at the back of the beach. The

beach, the bay, the rocks, everywhere was now clear of

rubbish.

Suggest several ways to keep our beaches clean. Talk about a ‘gotong-royong’ activity in school that the children

have taken part. Explain the values that the people have, based on the picture

on page 13. In groups, discuss the impact of a dirty beach and write down

your answers on a piece of paper. Pupils draw scenes before the place was cleaned up and after

it was cleaned up. In groups of 3, pupils come with a recycled item using

discarded objects.

Post Reading

Pupils compile pictures of clean and tidy places from newspapers and magazines and create a collage.

Using the story as a guide, pupils come up with a 5 minute sketch with the same theme.

Demonstrate correct way of throwing rubbish. e.g. throwing the rubbish, tying the bag to throw it.

Students cut out words which show the values of cleanliness from newspapers and paste it in their folio.

Pupils give a different ending to the story. Pupils come up with their own poem or song based on some key

words given by the teacher.
