CORA BAILEY AWARD WINDSOR-ESSEX 2017 AREA 3 Dark, dreary, dismal. Those three words pretty well sum up the month of April and even early May this year. And then there was Mother’s Day. Sunny, warm, wonderful. Invigorating, just like the recipient of today’s Cora Bailey Award. Lowanna Closs definitely is our very own warm ray of sunshine. From her bright and always stylish outfits (from her sparkling earrings right down to the tips of her tiny matching shoes) to her warm hugs and cloudless disposition, this lady is a real source of solar energy that our Windsor-Essex RWTO Branch has been blessed to have as our Social Convenor for the past three years. When she took over from the very capable and dedicated Emy McBride, Lowanna Closs had already been watching and learning from her mentor. Lowanna learned from the best and then added a little bit of her sunlit flair to the job. She created the Travel Club to encourage as many ladies as possible to become involved in our activities. She organized annual October trips to places like Stratford and St. Jacob’s, always providing unique prizes and activities to keep the travellers entertained along the way. She coordinated day trips (all with catchy, creative names) including a Rum Runners Tour, Kent Get Enough, a shopping spree in Chatham and Blenheim, Christmas Double Take at Willistead Manor, our own Murder Mystery evening, and of course, Treasures 1 and 2, her own version of The Antiques Road Show. And each of these venues was decorated with her own panache as were all her displays at the luncheons with the expert help of the two Vannas, as she calls them, Debbie Powell and Genny Rudzinski. And of course, who can forget the 80+ teas, honouring some of our special members? Again, she decorated the venue, Seasons in LaSalle, with her famous Lowanna flair and added the element of a visual presentation and a trivia game to involve our esteemed guests. As a treasured member of our executive, Lowanna is always ready to help in any capacity whether by organizing initiative committee outings, writing newsletter articles or sharing her creative ideas. Lowanna has plenty of sunshine to go around. Beyond her involvement with RWTO, she is an active volunteer in the community. In the past, she has helped Hospice and WETRA, Windsor- Essex Therapeutic Riding Association, but her main volunteer passion during retirement has been the Divine Mercy Food Bank where she is currently the Christmas and Easter program coordinator, working tirelessly to spread sunshine to families in need during those holiday seasons. Sunny, warm, wonderful. That’s Lowanna Closs, who I am proud to call my sister-in-law, my friend and today a most-deserving recipient of the Cora Bailey Award.
