Randy’s story:

•Diagnosed with Stage III rectal cancer at age 30

•Surgery with permanent colostomy

•6 weeks of radiation treatment

•ED with penile implant at age 31

•Bladder dysfunction at 40

•Neuropathy at 50

•Urostomy surgery at 58

•Active life: Surfing, yoga, biking, hiking, swimming

•Great Comebacks Western Region award winner: 2011

You know you’re an ostomate when…

• You have a favorite "Ensure" flavor.

• People ask about your guts, before they ask about your family.

• You have more photos of your insides that the outsides.

• You have a spare pair of underwear in your bag/pocket.

• You give directions via toilets rather than by restaurants.

Diet & Nutrition

Keep a “Food” journal Times, amounts, results including meds

Fewer “feet” is better 0: Fish, 2: Chicken/turkey, 4 feet:

beef/pork Half the plate: veggies, ¼ plate protein,

¼ carbs Fluids, fluids, fluids: 64 oz min.(check

w/ doc) Illies require more hydration

Diarrhea is our enemy, lomotil is our friend
