OASIS overview• OASIS is a worldwide consortium dedicated to
building systems interoperability specifications.• Focus on industry applications of structured
information standards, such as XML, SGML, CGM• Over 400 organizational and individual members• International, not-for-profit, open, independent
• Bottom-up technical agenda - Technical Committees formed on proposal of members- Technical agenda set by members
• Open, democratic, vendor-neutral process - Any interested parties may participate, comment- No one organization can dictate the standard

OASIS technical work process
1. Any three OASIS members propose creationof a technical committee (TC)
2. Existing technical work submitted to TC or TC starts work at the beginning
3. TC conducts and completes technical work Process is open and publicly viewable
4. TC votes to approve work as anOASIS Committee Specification
5. TC votes to submit the Committee Specification to OASIS membership for consideration
6. OASIS membership reviews, approves the Committee Specification as an OASIS Standard

Statement of purpose• Provide binding points for interoperability
of subjects used by topic maps documents- and other semantic web applications -
• Make legacy of publishedclassifications and vocabularies, interoperable by and through topic maps.
• Help classification, taxonomy, library ...specialists to become aware of topic maps as – a technology relevant to their fields– widening the scope of use of their legacy.
