Simple Jigsaw Step-by-Step Numbered Tent Cards

Step 3

Divide your class into groups (jigsaws) of five (the number of piec-es from the previous page) and have the kids sit together in these newly-formed “home groups.” Tell them that they are all about to become experts on one piece of the successful student project. In order to do, that they will have to temporarily leave their home group area and sit in an ex-pert group area.

Step 4

To form the expert groups, have your kids count off one thru five until everyone has a number. Send all of the numbers 1’s to Group Area 1 (Supplies and Organization), number 2’s to Group Area 2 (Preparing to Enter the Classroom), and so forth.

Step 5 After the kids have relocated to their new expert groups, their assignment is to brainstorm ideas for THEIR topic but NOT ideas related to the other topics. Remind them that they will need to take notes on what they are discussing so that when they return to their “home groups,” they can "teach" their home group members about what they’ve learned.

Step 6 After an appropriate time is allowed for brainstorming, ask students to reassemble in their original jigsaw groups. Each group leader, then calls on each expert to share ideas from his or her notes.

Evaluation Notes Evaluating cooperative learning activities may seem like a Herculean task, but, actually it's not. Like any other assessments, you must determine in advance what you would like to assess and to what degree. Do you want to evaluate individual success, group success or perhaps, cooperative skills? Actually, I think you may find that it's useful to evaluate all three. And, there are many ways to assess each of these areas. But of course, we teachers already have full plates--with all of the paperwork, lesson planning, endless paper grading, and the myriad of other things that are demanded of us, we just don't need something else to do. But, there is after all, some ways out... What concludes this packet is a small collection of assessment tools that can be used for cooper-ative learning. Several of these assessments are actually completed by the students themselves, thereby relieving you of the additional paperwork required. I sincerely hope that you will take from this whatever best suits your individual needs and that your cooperative learning sessions with your kids and productive and rewarding!
