Dear Cousins: Greensboro, Ne;

Please remember that John's new address inWestminster, CA is on the editorial page, as well as in the dues notice. Also please let him know as soon as you have a change of address. Several VV's have been returned when mailed to old addresses.

We are especially pleased with the fine new members of VF AA, as well as those of you who renew your memberships each year. Without you, of course, we could not continue. Of special appreciation are· those contributions sent in. Some of you have contributed each year. This has been your way of letting us know that you realize what we are really trying to accomplish. It has been most encouraging.

Linda Vernon of Stoneville, NC becomes the first appointment to our Board of Compilers in about three years, following Janice L. Koppenhoefer of Springfield, OH. All of our compilers are outstanding, and we are very pleased that Linda is now on the board.

THE ORIGIN OF THE HOUSE OF REVIERS~ VERNON -(Cont.) ABRINCIS."

"Richard De Briniis, having no children of his own, loved Robert Abrincis, son of his sister, and caused him to take homage of the knights, of the honor of Oakhampton, ·and made all the tenents of the manors belonging to that barony to swear their fealty to him, as their lord and his heir. Robert and wife, the daughter of GODWIN DOLE, went "beyond the seas" <probably to Normandy ... W.A.V.) and had Matilda, who married the Lord of Ayncourt."

"Adela· or Alda became heir to her brother and made RALPH A VENEL Baron.,.0f Oakhampton, upon whom REGINALD, Earl'of Cornwall, uncle of King Henry, 11, offered his youngest daughter in marriage. He refused and married the sister of SIR RICHARD DE REDVERS, Earl of Devon and the Isle of. Wight, and WILLIAM DE VERNON <Pole must have meant REGINALD DE COURTNEY here. W.A.V. ) grew angry and swpre to cause him to lose his honor of Oakhampton. He sent for MATILDA, daughter of ROBERT DE ABRINCIS, and made Ralph succeed her in court."

"Matilda and Lord Ayncourt had HOWISE DE A YNCOURT and by her second husband, ROBERT FITZ ROY, natural son of King Henry, 11, she had MATILDA, who married REGINALD DE COURT- . l\1EY <Not Howise, as stated by Prince. W.A.V.), whom Queen Elinor brought with her into England. William, Reginald's son by a former marriage, took Howise <Not Matilda. W.A.V.), eldest sister of Matilda. They had ROBERT DE COURTNEY. The said Matilda being barren, the honor of Oakhampton went to Robert De Courtney, son of Howise De Ayncourt, who married Lady Mary De Vernon, sole daughter of SIR WILLIAM DE REDVERS surnamed VERNON, from the place in Normandy where he was born, 5th Earl of Devon." This probably is a better account than that given by Dugdale in his Baronages of Eng land, Vol 1. In fact , Dugdale was also clisrrcditcd by the great critic, J.B. Round (Feudal England ) for his confused account of Baldwin De Mueles and Richard De Reviers, 2nd.

Looking again at my roll charts of Norman-English Vernon Lines, I am reminded that Sir William De Vernon, 5th Earl , may have had a son or grandson who assumed or was awarded the earldom. A SIR BALDWIN DE REDVERS <b. bef. 1217; d. 1245) was " ... a minor upon the death of his father <Or grandfather . W.A.V. )." He was styled "De Insula," "De fsle," and " Count Den and Earl of Devon." He was knighted by King Henry, 111, as "6th Earl of Devonshire. " His Coat-of-arms: or Cgold), a lion rampart azure <blue).

Sir Baldwin, 6th Earl of Devonshire, married Cl ) AMICE , daughter of SIR GILBERT DE CLARE, Earl of Hereford and Gloucester, in 1226 <Descendant of RICHARD DE CLARE, son of COUNT GILBERT and brother of BALDWIN DE MUELES. W.A. V. >; <2> ISABEL. daughter of WILLIAM DE MARSHAL, Earl of Pembroke, England's greatest fighting knight. and protector of three kings, whose wife was

also a descendant of Richard De Clare; and (3) MARGARET, daughter of WARRIN FITZ GILBERT, the king's Chamberlain and also a descendant of Richard De Clare. Margaret later married King John (This is now in question. W .A. V.).

The son of the 6th Earl was SIR BALDWIN DE REDVERS (1235-1262) , 7th Earl of Devon and the Isle of Wight. He was also styled "De Rivers," "Baldwin De L'Isle," and "Keeper of the manor of Sweneston", in 1261. He married MARGARET, Countess of Ribourg, daughter of THOMAS, Count of Savouy, 1257, first cousin of the Queen of England, who was daughter of PIERRE OF SAVOUY or Savoie. The 6th Earl also had a daughter, ISABEL DE REDVERS or Rivers, Countess of Den and Oakhampton and "Daughter of Baldwin, IV (? ) and AMICE DE CLARE." She married WILLIAM, Count D'Aumale and Holderness "of Craven" .

The ancient pedigree charts of the Norman-English Vernon Lines, including the so-called Staffordshire Pedigrees, show that both Sir Richard De Redvers <Reviers), Nahou, and Vernon, 2nd, and Sir Richard De Vernon, Baron De Shipbrook, with " ... a second son, WILLIAM." This son (one of them) became the Lord of Vernon in Normandy, either in 1136 or in 1150, upon the death of MATTHEW DE VERNON of the ancient Norman line. In addition to a son RICHARD, who became the Lord of Vernon, WILLIAM probably had a son HUGH.

From the records, I find that a HUGH DE INSULA of that period could have been placed on the charts as the son of Sir William and Lucia <He was given on the Staffordshire Pedigrees for Vernons). A Hugh is also listed with holdings in Normandy during the 1st half of the 12th Century. Since the present-day Vernons seem to derive from a HUGH DE VERNON, who, as claimed by most sources, was the second Baron De Shipbrook, I feel that he simply may have been another son of Sir Richard De Vernon, Isl Baron, rather than a son of William, Lord Vernon.

SIR HUGH DE VERNON, Baron De Shipbrook, then, married the daughter of BAILLOT, Lord of Houlgrove <Hargreves-Hargrove, etc. ), Erdswick, and Sandun. We assume that he inherited all of the Shipbrook estates of Sir Richard, who had held Bretherie and Utarie in 1086-7 <Domesday Book >, and who had been one of the first four barons created by HUGH LUPAS, Earl of Chester, in 1089. The Shipbrook estates included Shipbrook, Ashton, Picton, Bouton, Cogshull, Shurtach, Lefwich, Moulton, Warton near Over, Devenham, Bostock, Audlem, Crewe, Shavington, Bradbury, and others. He may have also received some of the properties· of his brother, WALTER, who held Wifleton, Nesse. Ledfam, and Preston in Cheshire; Hortwell, Adestock, and Place Merton in Bucks; and his share of his father 's properties in Normandy. Both were founding benefactors of St. Werbough's in Chester, in 1093. Although the problem of whether or not this Walter died without issue has not been adequately explored, I will proceed with

THE ORIGIN OF THE .HOUSE OF REVIERSVERNON-· (Cont.} the lineage from HUGH DE VERNON, son or grandson of Sir Richard, Baron De Shipbrook.

In 1086, a HUARD (Hugh> DE VERNON held Market Weston, Suffolk, as an under-tennent of WILLIAM DE ESCOIE$. We do not know if he was related to Sir Richard, Baron De Shipbrook. We are informed that a Hugh· <younger) became baron following the death of Richard. His sons incl~ded · RICHARD, who was probably styled "De Osbroke," and MATTHEW DE HOULGROVE, who was the progenitor of the families of ERDSWICK <Erdeswick) and HARGREVES (Hargrove). Both were born around the year 1121 ... and may have been twins. The Visitation of Chester, 1613, contains a chart back to 1404 which indicates that a Hugh De Vernon may have had a son, WARRIN (Warren), whose son was WARRIN of Westley. There also remains some confusion as to who married the daughter of Lord Houlgrove, Warrin or Hugh. An inscription on the gravestone of S. EnDSWICK at Sandun indicates that Huge was the father of the first Matthew De Houlgrove. Hugh appeared as Baron•De Shipbrook in 1119, when he donated to St. Werbough's. One source makes him a baron in 1109, which seems to me as most likely, provided Sir Richard De Reviers, 2nd and Sir Richard De Vernon were, in fact, one-andthe-same person. We do know that Sir Richard De Reviers, 2nd (wife Adeliza De Peverel) died in 1107 and was buried at Montbourge Abbey in the eontentin, Normandy. ·

SIR RICHARD DE OSBROKE, according to some, had only one son, ADAM DE NAPTON, progenitor of the BROUGHTON family, whose coat-of-arms was the same as that of SIR WARREN DE VERNON\ who became Baron De Shipbrook upon the death of Sir Hugh (or, a fess azure, with three garbs of wheat or). There may have been a slight variation. There is also strong evidence in the records to support the proposition that RICHARD DE VERNON of Radepont near Vernon in Normandy was the son of Hugh from whom most of the present-day Vernons descend. At least, we will show that he was the Richard who married the daughter of SIR WILLIAM DE AVENEL and was progenitor of "The Vernons of Haddon Hall. "

SIR RICHARD DE VERNON of Radepont should not be confused with the contemporary Richard son of Lord Vernon in Normandy. The former was Sheriff of Lancaster during the 1180's and married A VICE co-heiress of Lord Haddon. He was also styled "Richard De Harleston," although Harleston was held by several parties during the early llOO's including the Earl of Chester, The Dowager of Che~ter <Earl's widow), and Sir Walter De Vernon. Sir Richard married at least twice. His sons were WARREN, JlALPH, a pries t, RICHARD <?), ROBERT, and WILLIAM, Lord Haddon and Chief Justice of Chester, occ. 1~19, !228-30. Adam De Napton probably was a son of Sir Richard by one of three marriages and the records indicate that he may also have had~ son or a brother by the name of HUGH DE CAVELEY. Most, if not all, of the present-day Vernons descend from WARREN, who became the Baron De Shipbrook, and ROBERT, whose daughter, HOWISE, married GILBERT DE FRAUNCEYS <Francois). Howise was also the third wife of SIR RICHARD DE VERNON, Lord Marpel, etc., her 1st cousin and son of SIR WILLIAM DE VERNON, Lord Haddon.

HOWISE DE VERNON was childless by her cousin Richard, but inherited Harles ton, Haddon Hall <and Nether Haddon properties), and other fine estates

' from her father, ROBERT DE VERNON, halfbrother of Sir William. Robert received these properties following tlie death of his nephew, Sir Richard, who died Without legal heirs or heirs recognized by the crown and government. The estates in question may have gone directly, however, to the sons of the first Robert De Vernon named herein, namely Sir Richard De Harleston and Sir Robert, both of whom were banished for taking sides against the king during the mid-13th Century. RICHARD, son of GILBERT FRANCOIS and HOWISE, assumed the name VERNON for his mother's properties, and became Lord Haddon, Harleston, etc. His coat-ofarms was the fret sable <black), a quarter gules <red) . The first to bear the f ret sable was Sir Richard De Vernon of Radepont Cab!. 1185); his son Sir William, Lord Haddon, was awarded the f ret sable, a canton 1wles.

WAY had relocated from Chester Co., PA, to the Deep River MM <NC) during the 1770's . They then removed to the Westfield MM in Surry Co., NC, when it was established in 1790 by the Deep River and New Garden Friends of Guilford County. Four of their daughter's sons and two of her daughters, with their families, pioneered to Kansas. They were JAMES, WILLIAM, DAVID, BEN, MARY, and ELIZABETH <See the cover picture for the Sep, 1973, issue of VV>. They became known to their descendants as " The Six Who Came to Kansas." VF AA members FERN ANDREWS, GLADYS HADEN, ELVA GATHERUM, NAOMIE McDONALD, OLIVA GERA, MEL VERNON, and others are among these descendants.

Elva Gatherum of Salt Lake Ci ty , UT, a granddaughter of MARY VERNON and her first husband, ELIJAH WOOD, stated in a letter to her cousin, MEL VERNON of Moyie Springs, Ida. , that MORDECIA VERNON had remained in Ohio and that he was crippled. Perhaps he was wounded in the Civil War. Both he and his brother , WILLIAM, were disciplined by the Quakers of Ohio, during the late 1860's, for "med" and military service, probably in the Civil War . MCD meant "marrying-contrary-lo-doctrine."

Naomi McDonald of Otis Orchards , WA, also Mel's cousin, informed him by letter that David, James, Ben, Mary, and Elizabeth a ll came with their families to Decatur Co., KS. She added that Mary and Elizabeth, with their families, later removed to "The Western Colorado Slope." Of course, JANE V. DROTTS, Co-Chairperson of VFAA's Board of Compilers, who is a native of that county and who recently wrote two fine articles about her own family for the Decatur County Historical Society publication, has corresponded with all of the above mentioned searcher-VF AA members. She was a lso in close communication with GRETA RAMSAY about these Kansas Vernon pioneers. Jane's Kansas pioneer Vernon ancestor, however, was from Rockingham Co., NC .. . as were my own Vernons and those of hundreds of others, including WESTON TIMOTHY, husband of MARY K. TIMOTHY of Kaysville, UT, former Chairperson of our Board of Compilers, who has accomplished so much in the field of genealogy, and who is so deserving of many thanks from all of us.

LEWIS EDWIN VERNON 0872-1958) of Kanoa , KS, started a fine history and genealogy of his family during the I930's. He was a son of DAVID and MARY <Haddow> VERNON. Following his death, the job

VERNONS OF PENN'S COLONY (Cont.) was taken over by his nephew, HAROLD CATHCART, VFAA member, deceased, and brother of GLADYS <Cathcart) HADEN of Bridgeport, Neb.

'~ A fine manuscript was later memeographed and distributed to many descendants.

GRETA RAMSAY stated in her great manuscript, now in our possession, that Gladys Haden once mentioned in a letter to IVA BIXBY that Mordecai's son, ALLEN " Al" of Ohio, had written to her uncle, Lewis Edwin. ROBERT and DEBORAH <Stubbs ) VERNON, shown on page 5, col. 1, of the Sep., 1981, issue, No. 306., ROBERT, JR. , is shown as having married MARTHA HICKS ; a lso, his birth date is shown as 12 Feb. 1820. Actually, he was born 12 Feb. 1818, and at this writing, we do not know who he married. It was his younger brother, JOSEPH, who married MARTHA. Joseph was born at the StilJwater MM, Belmont Co .. Oh, 29 Feb. 1820. His number in this genealogy is 308. omitted in the Sep. issue. Their fami ly group is given below.

Their children were born in Indiana, but the family later resettled in the Pleasantville, Iowa, a rea.

VERNONS OF PENN'S COLONY (Cont.) 504. Milton Vernon (1868, Pleasantville, Ind. ) EDITOR'S NOTE: Greta Ramsay includes these

cond marriage of J oseph Vernon in her manuscript. She stated that the information was sent to her by Milton Vernon of Marengo, Ind., who married a Miss MARTIN. She received the information during the 1930's and stated in 1966 that Milton was " probably dead." He had m arried in 1875, and he did not give the name of his mother . However, several other sources give the name as RICHARDSON and one gives the first name as SARAH. The legend about Martha Hicks having been buried on an island in the Mississippi River was passed on to me by a Life Member of VFAA, GENE MOZENZA of Sun City, AZ. Gene is Martha's great grandson. He adds the possibiJity tl\at the U.S. Army Engineers may have recentl·f,.fo!)nd . her grave. OLIVIA GERA of Los Gatos, CA, · a descendant of Joseph's brother, THOMAS, has searched this family, but unfortunately VFAA has very little data on any of the family groups of the children of ROBERT VERNON Cb, 1777),:son of JAMES a nd TAM,4.R <Davis) VERNON. Joseph Vernon died in 1888, according to Greta Ramsay, find Miss Richardson, his second wife, was born in Virginia in 1837 and died in Iowa in 1916.

Genealogies of 'l\\•enty-Two Families by Marcia Russell Gabbell and in Four Generations of the Desct'ndants of Stra1igema11 Hutchins by Grider and Grider. I found the latter source quite interesting reading, since Strangeman was a Quaker who settled . in Surry Co. <later Stokes), NC. His decendants "went west."
