Children and families who have suffered the loss of a serving loved one were treated to a once in a lifetime experience when the Red Devils Parachute Regiment Freefall Team jumped and landed on a bespoke flag produced by one of the country’s leading flag firms.

Hampshire Flag Company donated the 3x3m digitally dye printed flag to FAB, a Ministry of Defence charitable initiative which supports bereaved military families by providing activity holidays.

The Red Devils accurately landed on the flag, which was printed with the FAB logo, when they jumped into Whitby Abbey during FAB’s final activity break of 2010. The team then culminated the event by playing football with the bereaved children who were on the break.

Captain Karen Tait, the Media Officer and volunteer for FAB said, “FAB is all about encouraging confidence, friendships and peer support, and having the Red Devils jump for the children and play football with them was an incredible adventure.

“The landing flag printed with the FAB logo not only had a real visual impact but also helped the children to feel part of the project. Hampshire Flag’s generosity and support has been invaluable and we are very grateful for their donation,” added Karen.

Hampshire Flag’s team of 21 produces hand-sewn national and international flags and digitally printed

banners. Managing Director of the Waterlooville firm,

Graham Wilkinson, said, “FAB offers bereaved families and children fantastic opportunities to have a break and to try something new. We are delighted to support this worthwhile cause by donating the landing flag and it is great to think that is has been used for such a spectacular event and has raised the

project’s profile.” Hampshire Flag also offers a bespoke flag design

service, PVC banners, marine flags, bunting, table flags, exhibition graphics and event systems in addition to the supply and installation an extensive range of flagpoles. The Hampshire Flag Company 0845 644 3129www.fabcamps.org.uk

Tate Modern proves a draw for the finishing allianceduplo has announced London Calling II at The Tate Modern, as “their best attended open house in their 35 year history”.

The show, which was supported by Finishing Alliance partners Friedheim International and Renz, attracted over 200 visitors from over 125 businesses, over the course of the two days. These figures see a 25% increase on the numbers for the first London Calling event in 2009.

During the show, The Finishing Alliance saw a Duplo/Renz partnership sale of the Renz semi automatic punch (340 A) and electric wire closer (ECL 360) machines to Duplo’s customer L & S Printing. Duplo also announced a £37,500 sale of their DC-645e with Integrated Folder to Craddocks Printing Works in Surrey.

“Whilst I think The Tate Modern certainly grasped the imagination of the printing industry, I think of equal importance was the development of The Finishing Alliance relationship. For the first time we could show our customers, who we have got to know very well over the years, other finishing solutions that we know would suit their business well. L & S Printing is testament to this theory” comments Tony Lock, Managing Director Duplo UK.

The Finishing Alliance used the event to show a ‘micro’ example of the three companies at work, producing a ‘live’ modern art calendar utilising six separate finishing processes amongst the three companies. They also hosted a VIP evening that included a ‘Private Viewing’ of the empty Tate Modern galleries.

The event was the launch pad for the Digital System 3500 booklet maker, the Fujipla Pluster laminator from Duplo and the new MBO T535 EA buckle folder from

Friedheim, with all products receiving “extremely positive reactions with reference to their high levels of automation”, according to Duplo.

“The venue was good, the level of visitors and enquiries was good, especially for the new MBO folder, and overall the event proved that co-operation between The Finishing Alliance members is going from strength to strength”, said Peter

Morris, MD of Friedheim International. Duplo also used the event to unveil a commissioned sculpture made from

spare Duplo parts. The piece, entitled Automated Precision, “highlighted the automation and precision which sets Duplo products apart, whilst embodying the emotion and creativity of the printed word”, according to the accompanying description.

The Finishing Alliance is already considering ideas for 2011 both for London Calling III and further projects where they can work together and champion the importance of print finishing.

“We were very pleased to sell and deliver direct from the Tate Modern some pieces of high end automated bench top punching and wire binding equipment. This generated an immediate return on investment from the event with many prospects still to follow up.

It was great to be involved in a vibrant, new, exciting, highly targeted event with our Finishing Alliance partners providing visitors direct and relevant solutions to their finishing requirements” concludes Iain Bullock MD Renz UKwww.finishingalliance.com

northprint 2011 [www.northprintexpo.com], which takes place in Harrogate from 10th to 12th May next year, will see a significant change in its agenda which will transform the show into one of the UK’s premier industry events. Following on from the success of Ipex 2010, the IIR Print Group has committed considerable investment to create new innovations and attractions that go beyond the traditional trade show

format. Visitors and exhibitors alike will have an opportunity to explore new areas of the show geared to delivering an industry wide experience to network, view new technologies, explore innovative applications, participate in customer case study demonstrations, as well as benefit from a range of informative workshops and seminars offering advice to boost business and maximise the potential of print.

The event will also be backed by a proactive integrated marketing campaign to drive visitor registration using IIR’s valuable Ipex 2010 visitor database. IIR will also host a special VIP visitor programme to attract printers who are in a position to invest in new technology. This database of UK printers with an intent to invest, is qualified by post-Ipex 2010 visitor analysis statistics, which indentified 38% were looking to invest in digital, wide format and inkjet, 19% in post press and finishing equipment, and 16% in offset technology.

Commenting on the show, Trevor Crawford, Director of the IIR Print Group says, “There is without doubt a fresh sense of optimism in the market, and now is the time to move forward and embrace this change. With this in mind, the IIR Print Group has invested heavily in developing the long respected Northprint brand and transform it to new heights in terms of its position in the UK events calendar. With the backing of the IIR Print Group, and all these exciting new attractions geared to increasing the visitor’s experience, Northprint 2011 is set to be the best ever and re-establish itself once again as one of the highlights in the UK print industry calendar.”

New to Northprint 2011 will be the Printers Profit Zone, which will provide a series of free business growth seminars throughout the three days of the show. The Zone will replicate the format that proved to be such a huge success amongst visitors at Ipex 2010. Master class sessions tackling the critical sales, profit and marketing issues facing print service providers today will be delivered by industry expert Nick Devine, who will offer practical advice on how to win new business and maximise profitability.

The BPIF’s Financial Alliance team of experts will also be hosting a Finance Clinic where printers can ‘drop in’ for impartial advice on finance and funding, tax issues, M&A (mergers & acquisitions), dept recovery as well as other related issues, and benefit from a range of short informative presentations. Other trade associations such as the BAPC will also be on hand to offer advice and support to members.

The event will also feature a theatre style ‘Litho Technology Centre’ where offset manufacturers and distributors, accompanied by their customers will run videos, demonstrations and case study style presentations. In addition, in recognition of the growth in the digital wide format market, Northprint 2011 will present a dedicated wide format applications lounge, which will showcase the capabilities of this technology and demonstrate the range of innovative applications to printers that are thinking of diversifying and investing into wide format technology.

Adding to the attraction of the event, Northprint will also witness an influx of potential young talent on the last day of the show, as the finalists of PrintIT! gather to attend the initiative’s sixth Annual Awards Ceremony. Proskills award winning ‘Schools into Industry’ programme, PrintIT! celebrates the best of Britain’s young talent, honours all the finalist students and their teachers, and presents category winners with individual awards as well as prizes for their schools in the form of print related equipment. Prior to the ceremony, the students, teachers and their twinning printers will all have the opportunity to visit the exhibits and industry attractions, providing them with an insight into the various career opportunities that the UK print industry offers.

Throughout the three days, the event’s highlights will be captured in the Northprint Show Daily, which will be printed onsite on the Ricoh stand.

“The diversity of Northprint 2011 is going to be a real win-win for everyone,” adds Crawford. “Exhibitors will be guaranteed exposure amongst the largest audience of UK commercial printers and print buyers while visitors have a host of additional value-added attractions to boost their experience, with a quality mix of technology, interactive demonstrations and educational workshops and seminars.” For more information, please contact: Peter Orford, IIR Exhibitions, 020 337 73384, [email protected]

the BPIF(British Printing Industries Federation) is leading the development of a UK Certification scheme for ISO12647-2, knowing that as in earlier quality and environmental standards, buyers will expect auditing and certification from UKAS accredited certification bodies. In response to such customer demands, a growing number of UK printing companies are working to this standard, but at present they cannot gain a certificate from a certification body accredited by UKAS (United Kingdom Accreditation Service) to evidence this. For this reason the BPIF engaged UKAS in discussions last year and at the same time set up a working group to develop scheme requirements. This was welcomed by UKAS and the scheme requirements document was published in February (available from the BPIF [email protected]).

Working to meet the exacting standards of the BPIF scheme and anticipating the requirements of UKAS, Benson Group has been certified by Print and Media Certification Ltd (PMC), the first certification body to audit against the BPIF scheme using the approach set out by international certification body standards.

Andrew Brown, Corporate Aff airs Director at the BPIF added “We wish to congratulate Benson Group as the fi rst company to meet the requirements of the BPIF ISO12647-2 scheme. They will be joined by a fast growing community of printers that know that this is the only clear and eff ective way to demonstrate not only that they can print to ISO12647-2 but crucially, that they have the systems in place to sustain that standard, and that it has been rigorously assessed by an accredited and independent third party. We also want to welcome the eff orts of PMC to introduce certifi cation of the BPIF scheme rapidly in anticipation of the UKAS accreditation that will follow. What is also very encouraging is to note the clear production cost benefi ts

already gained by Benson Box.”PMC Director Jon Stack said: “We are delighted to issue the first certificate

for the BPIF ISO12647-2 scheme and to congratulate Benson Group on their achievement, and welcome the support we have received from BPIF for our audit scheme. We have developed an audit system for this scheme which is designed to meet the international standards for certification bodies, and this is the first time this has been attempted for ISO12647-2 in the world, as far as we know,. The difference to other certifications for ISO12647-2 is that our approach is one of a third party, completely independent and impartial, with no conflicts of interest, and the accreditation we will be seeking from UKAS will demonstrate that this is the case. It is only through UKAS accredited certification that customers of the industry can have full confidence in the validity of a claim of ISO12647-2 compliance, when it is made to them by a printer or print manager.”

Commenting on his company’s award, Benson Group Managing Director, Mark Kerridge said: “We are of course delighted to be the first print-based business in the world to be awarded an independently assessed ISO12647-2 certification. Whilst the journey has taken us over two years, our team has learned a great deal about the whole process along the way. We have enjoyed working with the people from BPIF, and whilst it has been a long and challenging process, it has been one that has further raised the standards across our press room. It has provided a positive impact in many different areas of production, including job make-ready times, reduced wastage, consistency of colour, reduced press pass time, and an increased confidence when talking to customers about colour quality issues.”For more information on the BPIF, visit: www.britishprint.com.

preSS peripherals guru Peter Benton is running the London Marathon next April and he is committed to raising at least £2,000 for Orchid, the charity for the research into, and treatment of, male specific cancers.

The managing director of technotrans explains: “My wife Julia has had breast cancer and previously I have done fund raising for ladies cancer charities. It was at her suggestion I focused this time round on the much less publicised male cancer issues. Some 37,000 men will be diagnosed with a male specific cancer in 2010 alone”.

“Us blokes tend to be in denial about health issues, thinking we are all invincible, so if I can change this in some way, it would have been worth it. I have committed to raise £2,000 so if there is anyone out there who would help this charity by sponsoring my run I would be delighted to have any amount they can offer. My training is going well but will undoubtedly be spurred by some support from the industry.”Peter Benton’s fund raising website is:www.bmycharity.com/peterbenton

Mimaki’s JfX-plus series LED Uv fl atbeds, featuring higher print speeds

MiMaKi’S JFX-plus Series flatbed UV printers now achieve a maximum print speed of 23.6m2 per hour through the implementation of a post-curing unit, where the printed ink receives a secondary curing after the initial one from the head carriage mounted lamps.

The maximum print speed of the JFX-plus series is now 80% faster than the previous maximum print speed of the JFX-1631. Print service providers requiring fast turnarounds, can now meet their clients’ requirements with the additional print speed combined with the ultra high quality result synonymous with the Mimaki flatbed. The printer is capable of producing high image quality with the ability to output legible 3pt text. Mimaki’s UV LED curing also enables printing to heat sensitive substrates, as its curing diodes do not generate excessive heat and therefore eliminate media deformation and colour changes.

National sales manager for Mimaki’s exclusive UK & Ireland distributor; Hybrid Services Ltd, John de la Roche commented on the introduction; “The potential to further advance speed with the new JFX-plus model is very exciting and the fact that it needn’t be at the sacrifice of print quality furthers Mimaki’s reputation for high end output.”

The Mimaki JFX-plus series will be available in two different sizes: JFX-1615plus that features a maximum print size of 1,602 x 1,500 mm and the JFX-1631plus with a maximum print size of 1,602 x 3,100 mm.

In addition to the advancement in speeds; an optional automatic roll unit for unattended and uninterrupted web printing can now be added to the printer. This enables short run print orders to be efficiently processed and printed; significantly improving productivity. Alongside this feature; unattended, overnight continuous printing for large volume orders allows quick turnarounds to be more readily achieved.

The JFX-plus Series is able to print on non-coated substrates up to 50mm thickness and two ink types are available to suit different applications – hard or flexible UV curable inks. Mimaki’s white LED UV ink makes vivid full colour print possible on transparent or coloured substrates and in addition, the clear ink from the hard inkset provides glossy or matte finish adding value to the printed product.

All inks can be applied with variable layer printing enabling dimensional printing to create textured effects. In addition to the low running costs associated with Mimaki’s LED UV printer range, the JFX-plus Series sports several other green credentials including the use of Mimaki’s Eco-Cartridges which reduce waste; allowing the user to simply replace the ink pack inside of the cartridge casing.Existing owners of Mimaki JFX-1631 UV LED large format printers can upgrade their machines to JFX-plus Series specifi cation by investing in the post-curing and/or roll unit. All options are available from Hybrid via their authorised reseller network, and more information is available on their website – www.hybridservices.co.uk or by calling them on 01270 501900.

inteC Printing Solutions has every right to feel justified in celebrating their success – and this they did on Friday, 8th October – when they opened their doors to welcome guests including suppliers, reseller partners, clients and the media.

The morning began with the opening by Robert Syms MP (Member of Parliament for Poole) and was followed by presentations given by Managing Director (Ian Melville) and Kerry Button (International Channel Development Manager) giving their guests a guide on how this success and growth has been achieved and where the company is heading.

Intec Printing Solutions has their international head office in Poole, Dorset where they launched the first in a new range of digital printing presses – the Intec CP2020 – in January, 2009. Further models in the range were launched at IPEX – the international printing exhibition held at the NEC in May this year. A great deal of interest in the new model range was expressed at IPEX and since then the number of international distributors for the Intec range has more than doubled to over 60 countries.

Managing Director, Ian Melville, said ‘I am absolutely delighted that we, as a UK company, are now exporting our printing systems to countries as far afield as Australia, India, Middle East, Asia, Africa, North and South America and Russia. Certainly we are bucking the trend by seeing substantial growth in sales and even more exciting is that most of our growth is coming from export sales around the globe’.

With two new offices recently opened, one in Florida to look after exports to the American market, and the other in Holland to look after the European market, and with distribution partners in over 60 countries to look after - who can deny that Intec is doing something right?

The growth in sales and exports has also resulted in the company needing to create a number of new senior posts recently including a Technical Director, a Head of Research and Development, an International Training Manager, a European Channel Development Manager and a VP of Sales & Marketing for North America.

Intec Printing Solutions has put their success down to the fact that all of its products are professional but affordable full colour digital printing presses with a range of unique capabilities. The company’s new heavy stock digital printing system and their new envelope and mailing systems have dramatically shifted the paradigm in these sectors with a professional solution now being available at a fraction of the price of competitor’s products.

Guests were given demonstrations of the new Intec models. Standard features such as their ability to print on to a very wide range of media substrates from 55 gsm right through to over 512 gsm means that the Intec range can print on to stocks no other digital printers in the world can handle. Users can print everything from packaging materials, greetings cards, magnetic signage, point of sale, heat transfer stocks, envelopes, labels, banners and posters, gatefold brochures as well as all the more normal digital printing applications.

This is a company with customer satisfaction at the top of its agenda and claim their training courses (which has been attended by trainees from over 60 countries

in the last year or so) and after sales service is second to none.In addition the products are exceptionally reliable and designed so that users do

not need to rely on expensive service and support agreements as everything is modular and all consumables can simply be replaced as required by the operator in literally a few seconds. Thus the service and support required is almost nil – minimising down time and the associated cost of service engineer callouts outs or the need for expensive service and support contracts – whilst making the product easy to sell and support globally. This innovative approach and high product reliability has significantly contributed to the international sales success of the Intec product range.

Intec is also very mindful of the world we live in and is proud of the fact that the Intec printers are manufactured in an environmentally friendly state of the art zero carbon factory and they continue to explore methods to reduce carbon emission as part of their cleaner and greener business ethos.

Furthermore a percentage of the sale of all the Intec consumables goes to support a number of projects in Sri Lanka and Ghana which Ian Melville (Managing Director) visits personally to ensure that the money goes directly to where it is needed and without the heavy administrative costs usually associated with such projects. In the last year the company has 100% funded the building of a new community centre and church in the tea growing highlands of Sri Lanka plus a an extension to the school that was built a couple of years ago. Other projects recently funded also include an orphanage in Sri Lanka and providing grants for students wanting to gain a university education in Ghana who would not otherwise be able to afford to study beyond basic schooling.

How refreshing is it, in this present economic climate, to see a company enjoying what it does whilst delivering high quality UK manufactured products around the globe, and doing what they do so well and professionally that it inspires confidence and success in those that conduct business with them. For more information on Intec Printing Solutions you can visit www.intecprinters.com or email [email protected] or call 01202 845960

Export success by UK printer manufacturer

KEEping it LocaLFor 17 years, Paper Innovation has been proud to manufacture bespoke promotional items at their Preston based factory premises. All of these products had evolved from their signature adhesive Stick Up Notes.

Despite the worrying times of the last few years, they have seen steady growth and decided that now is the time for the biggest investment the company has seen. In the past 6 months, they have invested in machinery to enhance every aspect of production, including print, guillotine, die cutting, perfect binding and lamination facilities. In all areas, they have sought out the very latest technologies and innovations to take advantage of the most advanced equipment.

They have also taken the opportunity to move into the production of wiro-bound pads, a new product line for this company. The purchase of the latest punching and bindery machinery enables them to manufacture

high quality items entirely on site. The company directors were eager to continue

manufacturing all of their products in their Lancashire factory and not outsource from other manufacturers. Managing Director, Steve Johnston commented “It is a shame that so much manufacturing in Britain has stopped recently. I am proud that we made the decision to invest in this machinery and protect our small slice of British industry, as well as jobs in this area.”

“In January, we will complete the purchase of state of the art book cover bindery equipment. It is a big investment, coming at over £250,000, but it allows us to achieve the speed and quality demanded by the industry. The only other way would be to buy pre-made covers from overseas, but this was not an option we would consider.”[email protected], www.paperinnovation.co.uk, tel 01772 562 526

Unibind’s slidebook – the easy editable photo bookunibind, a specialist in binding systems for photo prints and personalisation solutions for photo books presented a unique binding method at Photokina 2010. Updating photo books is now possible thanks to SlideBook, the editable photo book from Unibind. The SlideBook uses a revolutionary binding method, developed in collaboration with The Eastman Kodak Company. It combines the Unibind PhotoBook with a new binding profile that secures the prints and is slid into the cover spine. The SlideBook means users can now edit their photo books without a specialist binding machine.

The SlideBook overcomes all the common obstacles to binding photo prints. With the SlideBook’s unique binding method, photo prints are anchored inside the ‘slide’ profi le by simply perforating them and securing them on the binding pins. The profi le is then closed and slid into a Unibind PhotoBook, where it is fi xed and hidden in the cover spine.

The SlideBook has universal appeal because anyone can use it – no special binding system or binding knowledge is required. The ‘slide’ profile can be used again and again – just slide it out of the cover, open it up and add new prints. Which means users can update their photo books as often as they like.

In addition, the perforation process guarantees perfectly aligned photo prints, creating an impeccably presented photo book. The SlideBook will be available in various sizes. www.unibindsystems.co.uk

Konica Minolta raises the bar with breakthrough colour production systemsKoniCa Minolta has launched the bizhub PRESS C6000 and bizhub PRESS C7000, digital colour presses designed to meet the demanding and diverse requirements of the commercial print sector. With a print speed of up to 60 and 71 pages per minute respectively and an impressive maximum input capacity of up to 7,500 sheets, the bizhub PRESS C6000 and C7000 handle monthly volumes of around 330,000 prints with ease.

Equipped with a robust new eight beam laser engine and eight bit full colour resolution at 1200 by 1200dpi, the bizhub PRESS C6000 and C7000 represent a turning point for digital colour stability and quality on long print runs. The bizhub PRESS C6000 and C7000 achieve this using Konica Minolta’s Screen-Enhancing Active Digital Process (SEAD II) technology, which combines an array of technical innovations to guarantee truly exceptional colour reproduction even at top speeds.

This includes FM (Frequency Modulated) screen technology which provides additional screens for higher quality prints; ITbit technology that helps to refine the clarity of text; image stability which automatically improves the stability of the image quality enhancing production efficiency; and density control which senses and corrects the gradations of different media according to the paper used, eliminating the time consuming process of producing test patterns. These automated colour management tools facilitate streamlined workflows with calibration that is completely hands free, and frees operators to focus on producing more outstanding quality jobs in less time.

The bizhub PRESS C6000 and C7000 also utilise Konica Minolta’s third generation Simitri HD+ polymerised toner for enhanced image quality and low temperature fusing even on thick paper, creating picture perfect prints on to paper weights of up to 300gsm, in both duplex and standard printing modes. In addition to low temperature fixing, the new third generation Simitri HD+ polymerised toner also features enhanced heavy paper productivity, virtually eliminating paper curling.

Konica Minolta has also equipped the bizhub PRESS C6000 and C7000 with a mechanical decurler designed to reduce curl through the paper path. Where required the system performance can be enhanced with a unique optional humidification decurler which can raise the moisture content in the paper, reducing curling and cutting static charge.

The bizhub PRESS C6000 and C7000 are also the first colour digital presses to adopt Konica Minolta’s air suction belt paper feed system for highly accurate feeding of a wider range of substrates. There is also a skew detection system, which detects and prevents paper from skewing inside the machine, ensuring almost no image shift to photos on spread layouts. Customisable paper profiles and image alignment save time, increase productivity, and ensure the highest quality output.

In common with the entire Konica Minolta professional production print system range, the bizhub PRESS C6000 and C7000 offer a flexible choice of online finishing options including large capacity stacker, hole punching, folding, stapling, saddle stitching and perfect binding.

For Konica Minolta Business Solutions (UK) Ltd, Pauline Brooks, Group Product Manager for the Production Print Division said, “When Konica Minolta launched its first professional colour digital system in 2006 it was a game changer for the market, providing affordable digital colour for the CRD and commercial print sectors. Since then our competitors have been playing catch-up but the new bizhub PRESS C6000 and C7000 raise the bar yet again. The systems offer outstanding image quality and image stability over long print runs, with output comparable to offset litho quality. The bizhub PRESS C6000 and C7000 represent a significant R&D investment and are clear evidence of Konica Minolta’s leadership in the colour production print sector.”www.konicaminolta.co.uk

Mitsubishi’s latest range of retail solutions are designed specifi cally for high street stores, from smaller independents and pharmacies that want to offer instant digital prints and ID photos, to larger stores that want to be able to offer a complete one stop solution that includes photo gifts.

In-store dry lab solutions all wrapped up.

the 24-inch Epson Stylus Pro 7890 and the 44-inch Epson Stylus Pro 9890 have been designed to help the proofing and display graphics markets create accurate prints at high speed.

Using Epson’s 8-colour UltraChrome K3 with Vivid Magenta inkset in combination

with the TFP print head for enhanced dot quality and crisp, clear images, means both printers produce top quality results. They achieve one of the highest colour gamuts on the market with consistently smooth gradations, ideal for the perfect reproduction of challenging skin tones and detailed textures. Three densities of black, comprising a standard photo or matte black (selected automatically depending on the media) plus a light black and light light black, create a perfect tonal range.

This combination of black inks also means that prints are free from bronzing, with a uniform surface appearance without discernible difference between light and dark areas. In addition metamerism is reduced, ensuring grey tones are consistent no matter what light source they are viewed under.

The optional in-line SpectroProofer ensures consistent, repeatable colour accuracy when using different media, rapidly measuring control strips and colour charts when creating ICC profiles and print verification results.

Martin Johns, market development manager for large format printers at Epson UK, says: “Not only do the Epson Stylus Pro 7890 and Epson Stylus Pro 9890 offer first class colour reproduction but they also represent a big boost in productivity. They have a high production speed aided by Epson’s Automatic Droplet Detection System to identify blocked nozzles without intervention. Both devices carry photo and matte black inks simultaneously and the built-in rotary knife means prints are cut quickly and cleanly while the improved supply handling means paper rolls are changed effortlessly in seconds.

“These features offer significant benefits in terms of saved cost and time to our customers.”

The Epson Stylus Pro 7890 is priced at £2595 and the Epson Stylus Pro 9890 is priced at £5195. Both models will be available to purchase from 1st January 2011 www.epson.co.uk

pantone - provider of professional colour standards for the design industries, is launching CAPSURETM, a compact, handheld device that lets design professionals, contractors and do-it-yourselfers confidently measure and match colour inspiration instantly – from small, patterned, multi-coloured textures and textiles to walls and carpeting.

Created for professionals in industrial and graphic design, CAPSURE allows users to accurately identify colour inspiration from any surface, material or fabric and match it to a PANTONE® Color for easy communication. With unsurpassed accuracy, CAPSURE significantly reduces the time it takes to measure or choose a colour from a sample or any other form of colour inspiration.

“CAPSURE’s advanced image capture technology sets a new standard for accuracy and versatility in a portable device,” said Giovanni Marra, director of corporate marketing at Pantone. “The real power of CAPSURE is its ability to measure the colour of any surface, including small, patterned and multi-coloured textures and textiles, which can confound other instruments because of their textural complexity, and quickly match them to more than 8,000 PANTONE Colors.”

The device uses powerful tri-directional image capture technology that eliminates the shadows and interference inherent to patterned and textured materials and surfaces. By illuminating the surface being measured from three different directions while simultaneously recording 27 colour accurate images in 1.6 seconds, CAPSURE can extract up to four dominant colours from an intricate pattern so the viewer can clearly identify the desired colour.

CAPSURE’s image capture technology lets professionals preview what they are measuring on its 1.75 inch colour screen, in real-time, to affirm image accuracy. Those images are then stored on the device for later reference. CAPSURE has the ability to record the last 100 colours measured for later reference. Users can also annotate colours with a voice recording as well as a time and date stamp. Additionally, the device provides harmonious shades and identifies related colours that are lighter, darker or similar in tone to the identified colour.

CAPSURE comes pre-loaded with all PANTONE Color Libraries allowing users to match more than 8,000 colours with a single device. Users can also toggle across multiple PANTONE Libraries and cross match any material or surface. CAPSURE includes:• ThePANTONEFASHION+HOMEColorSystemLibrary(paperand

pleaSe CheCK out your CSMA members benefits that offer

group savings on a growing number of business services.

Taking another leaf from the coalitions learning tree we are exploring how best to reduce expenditure on everyday overheads.

The economies of scale prove we can buy better as a group rather than individuals and with 6000+ print businesses our buying power potential is well worth teaming up for.

Early participants to our CSMA printers insurance have found a bespoke printers policy better tuned to our needs. Together we will find savings through talking to our broker, Abigail Rees at Lucas Fettes [email protected]

Whether your policy is due for renewal or not, scan or email your existing policy for a non obligationary appraisal. In fact if you visit www.csmaservices.co.uk you will find the insurance ‘button’ has now been added. The interest has been so great that we now have a dedicated CSN member of staff handling enquiries as well as Abigail at Lucas Fettes, and as we always practice what we preach have received a quotation for our own copy shop.

Having had an insurance company spend a day with us to check our needs some years ago we will admit to being very satisfied with things as they were. However it was a pleasant surprise to receive a quote from Abi with a considerable saving, and in the knowledge that Lucas Fettes had studied our industry for 6 months ahead of designing a policy to fit our members needs.

Welcome again to Fiona Mostyn who

introduced the concept of BCP last month and has contributed another article with the top ten issues of a Business Continuity Plan which you will find on page 29

Natural progression for most of our print shops will be to also supply stationery at the point of need. Print and Stationery. How does that sound? Maybe not revolutionary as many of you are at it already and good luck to you. As for the rest; you are now formally invited to join in supplying all sorts of supplies that compliment print.

Aiming for the top we have partnered with Spicers. It doesn’t get any better than the group CSMA deal we have engineered for all of our group to benefit from.

epSon has announced that Digigraphie, its label of excellence for photographers, artists, print bureaus, galleries and museums, will be launched in the UK in early 2011. Digigraphie by Epson enables artists, and copy bureaus alike to maximise their opportunities to add value to their work exclusively, by using the very best printing technology together with a wide range of certified media, therefore guaranteeing exceptional, repeatable quality. Those participating in this programme have the added benefit of being able to showcase their works on-line by uploading their images to a dedicated section of the Digigraphie.com website.

Digigraphie is the result of many years of research by Epson and is made possible by the technical performance of Epson Stylus Pro printers and on the resistance and quality of its range of UltraChrome pigment inks. The Digigraphie embossed seal confirms a print has been created following a specific digital process. It assures customers that their print is genuine, and it opens new opportunities to provide a wider range of long lasting, limited edition works. Each Digigraphie print is individually authenticated with a serial number, signed by the artist, embossed with the Digigraphie seal and accompanied by a certificate of guarantee.

The Epson Stylus Pro printer range, utilising the UltraChrome family of 8 and 10 colour pigment based inks and certified fine art/photo media offer a number of characteristics which meet the expectations of professional photographers and artists. They include a wide colour gamut, the smoothest of gradation and absolute control over the tone and hue of black and white prints thanks to the three densities of black ink and an advanced printer driver.

A range of 26 high quality fine art/photo media is certified for use with the Digigraphie programme, 10 produced by Epson, seven by Canson and nine by Hahnemühle. Each media undergoes rigorous testing by independent laboratories to ensure it

meets high levels of quality, durability and consistency of reproduction, to guarantee the stability of prints over time.

Paul Gallagher has been a fine art black and white photographer for over twenty years, dedicating his photography to Northern England and the Scottish Highlands and photographing mainly in medium and large format. More recently he has been applying this expertise to colour and digital photography. “Epson printers provide essential assurance that my Limited Edition prints will maintain their original qualities for many generations. The print quality and reliability of my Epson printers make them the cornerstone of my work.”

Martin Johns, market development manager, Epson UK, says: “The demand for digital photography and art increases year after year, as people realise they can own their favourite works as limited edition prints. For professional artists and photographers, it is essential that they remain in control of all their reproductions to protect the value and legacy of their work. That is why Epson is launching Digigraphie in the UK. Our quality and experience of digital print making has ensured that the Digigraphie qualifications will meet the needs of both the customer and professional.”

To become a Digigrapher, artists and galleries can equip themselves with the Epson products which comply with the technical terms of Digigraphie from a select number of resellers that will be chosen for their recognised skills and their involvement in the photography and art markets.

Everything you need to know about Digigraphie and how to become a member, along with the portfolios of existing Digigraphie artists in Europe, is at www.digigraphie.com. Visitors to the site have free access to view and buy all the images. www.epson.co.uk

Brief EncountersBrief Encounters 2010 winners stun the judges with creativity and impact

Mediapro in london on 2 November will be the back drop

for the presentation of this year’s Brief Encounters 2010 Awards which were judged during week beginning 18th October. Norwich University College of the Arts and the University for Creative Arts at Epsom share top accolades in this year’s awards for degree level design students.

Tara Doswell’s entry secured the Gold in the first brief which was to develop a typographic style to reflect PaperCo’s strengths that would suit corporate stationery, a web site and PowerPoint presentation.

Chairman of the judges Brian Webb, managing director of design company Webb & Webb described the “tree rings” design from the Norwich college as: “Fantastic, way above anything else submitted. It is a truly beautiful, stunning piece and the two sided business cards and complement slips and the whole messaging is excellent. Even the mounting onto complementary coloured boards is very professional.”

In her rationale Tara writes: “My principal design consists of eight concentric circles, each representing one of the eight divisions that comprise The Paper Company. These circles signify the rings of a tree, alluding to the strength and growth that make PaperCo a market leader. The extended line breaking away from the rings can be seen as a sheet of paper – a tree at its source.”

In the second brief, the first to challenge students to use multi-media and create an electronic sting or short 20 to 30 second video to promote a service offered by PaperCo or the link between paper and communication. Although this category attracted fewer entries, those submitted were of an impressive standard and in the end two Golds were awarded for two partnerships at the University for Creative Arts at Epsom.

Anthony Buck, print procurement manager of Henderson Global Investors, says: “The imagination and creativity of the entries really impressed me and the way the students looked at adding more platforms for their work. The winners produced riveting graphics that drew you into screen. Each entry was supported by story boards with the rationale behind their decision-making and designs and

these, too, were well presented.” Chris Pantling and Sinead Ham chose

to promote the green credentials of PaperCo with some stunning graphics of paper transforming itself into different shapes or products to illustrate closed loop recycling. These students determined to use paper as the main focus of the animation and simple language like Reclaim or Save to reflect the paper merchant’s aim to be highly responsible on environmental and sustainability issues.

A hypnotically attractive entry from Becky Scarborough and Clare Lane, also from Epsom, had the viewer seeing blocks of words falling from the top of the screen to do Tetris-like turns on a reel of paper but finally coming into “fit” for a sheet to be cut to the exact specifications required for the job. It perfectly reflected PaperCo’s customer sheeting service. In turn the messages read: Cut to your exact specification; this ensures less waste; saving you money. They even showed how it could be developed into a more contemporary format by creating an iPhone App.

WHEN YOU’VE SPENT a couple of hours on the M25 getting

there, battling with the output of 21st century industry, you really don’t want to sit through a presentation with loads of confusing tables and charts, and dizzying statistics, intent to impress you with the size and ambition of the corporation.

There were a couple of charts, of course, but the main introduction to the UK launch of Epson’s latest large format printers was a short, light hearted film, on one of their high quality projectors, with a comic Japanese actor unveiling all of the world firsts the company has achieved, like a magician pulling rabbits out of a hat.

Apart from the entertainment value, it was worth underlining that despite the general public perception in this country that Epson just make desktop printers, the company is actually Seiko Epson, with huge research, development and production expertise in many areas from precision watches to industrial robots as well.

But although at the forefront of technology, Epson is not into innovation for novelty’s sake. The strength of its inkjet printer range over the last decade has been a basic continuity in structure and mechanics. As well as their absolute quality, that has been the reason for their

popularity in the professional print room. The new range of printers does not

replace existing ones so much as compliment them, giving the customer a wide selection of product choice depending on ultimate use. Depending on price and quality, you can chose from a basic four colour to an eleven colour 17 inch printer that will match 98 per cent pantone coverage for accurate proofing.

The latter, the 4900, supplements the 4880 model which we have tested before. It’s a desktop printer - if you have a large enough desk - in that it doesn’t come with a stand and has a flat bottom.

This layout enables a flexible paper feed option, with both roll from above or sheet fed from a tray below, plus an additional heavyweight card access which will enable printing on 1.5mm thick media.

We liked the 4880, its small footprint and adaptable print media make it a perfect tool in a space restricted copy shop. The 4900 is the same but be er. The eight colour K3 ultrachrome inks with vivid magenta are now eleven individual colours remixed and rebranded as Ultrachrome HDR or High Dynamic Range.

HDR is more than a punchy name, it heralds a whole step forward in increasing the printable colour range. It’s the latest buzz name on

the digital photography forums, but that’s another story that will save for next month. Suffi ce it to say that customers, whether photographers or graphic artists, will be pushing the boundaries of what is printable, and many examples are starting to appear in popular magazines, as well as websites. If you Google HDR images you can fi nd loads of examples of the style.

I look forward to getting the 4900 on trial so we can do some experiments, but certainly independent test prints done at the launch were impressive, even under the close scrutiny of their creators.

At the heart of all Epson printers is the Micro Piezo head, which unlike competitors does not use an electrical charge to heat a proportion of the ink before spraying, making it much more durable and reliable. The new models have an advanced TFP head which has twice the number of nozzle jets (360 as opposed to 180) for more precise control of colour and fl ow. Basically if you can be er control where the ink drops, the more accurate will be the dot spacing, and therefore the image.

Alongside the A2 4900, the new larger format machines are the 24 inch (A1) 7890, and the 44 inch (A0 plus) 9890. They share the new TFP heads, and have nine individual colours. All of the big Epson printers have the sensible concept of using gravity to help paper feed, hence the media is placed above the print head to drop down, rather than be dragged up by rollers.

To help loading long, heavy rolls, the traditional spindle has been replaced with a bobbin at either end.

Along with the GS6000 solvent printer, shown at Ipex, the new machines give Epson the broadest presence in the print market for large format printing and signage, whether for high quality or speed. Most of them also share the same or similar chassis, along with print dialogue boxes, making anyone familiar with one, instantly at home with another.

This is a particular issue in a busy digital print shop, where finding time to train staff to work a particular machine is difficult enough without having to add one more completely new interface to an already bewildering selection of buttons and options.

If it works, as they say, don’t bother fixing it !

Stand and DeliverSometimes it’s better to blow your own trumpet gently rather than blast people’s eardrums. Other manufacturers could take a musical lesson from Epson. Martin Christie writes…

arjowiggins creative papers wins fsc environment award

arJoWigginS Creative Papers, a manufacturer of eco-sustainable creative papers has won a prestigious accolade from the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).

The FSC Global Partner Award in the paper and pulp category was handed to Arjowiggins as recognition for the company’s achievements in promoting the FSC. Sustainability is at the heart of Arjowiggins Creative Papers and all Creative Brands use wood fibres exclusively from FSC certified forests.

Jonathan Mitchell, Business and Marketing Director at Arjowiggins Creative Papers said: “We are pleased to win this award and it is just recognition for our commitment to producing high-quality, sustainable products. FSC certification is not only the guarantee of the preservation of the environment but to forest biodiversity and local forest communities, and we will continue to support the organisation in its efforts to promote the responsible management of the world’s forests.”

For this reason the national merchant with the local focus is taking a new series of procurement seminars around the country. It will highlight methods for assessing and confirming responsible procurement behaviour. It wants to minimise the opportunities for illegal logging, unsustainable methods of production, unnecessary landfill and excess carbon outputs.

“We will cover procurement policies involved in Chain of Custody (FSC and PEFC) but also go beyond that to help our customers understand the sustainability approaches expected in: the UK Government’s timber procurement policy (FLEGT); for PAS 2020, the direct mail standard; and ISO 14001, the environmental standard. Certification body BM Trada will work with us on this programme so printers will have access to a range and depth of expertise,” says Veronica.

To take part in a regional seminar printers are advised to contact their local PaperCo branch for more details.

Mondi has been shortlisted for six of the twelve 2010 Pulp & Paper International Awards taking place on November 16th in Brussels. The PPI Awards are the only global awards dedicated to recognising the achievements of companies, mills and individuals in the pulp and paper sector. Mondi is also a finalist in The Green Business awards to be held November 2nd in London. These awards acknowledge excellence in green practice, strategy and products.

“We are extremely proud of all of our Mondi finalists and the fact that Mondi has been nominated for six out of 12 PPI prizes and a Green Business Award. It is rewarding to have our accomplishments recognised in this way, particularly

Employees were invited to write about or draw their favourite tree on 9lives paper, manufactured by Arjowiggins Graphic for PaperCo, and create sculptures that represent their favourite trees from organic play-doh. The aim of the activities was to raise awareness of FSC Friday in a bid to support the international event, while at the same time crystallising the importance of recycled papers.

9lives Offset and 9lives Preprint are manufactured from 100% post-consumer FSC certified fibres and offer a high whiteness and outstanding consistency with excellent sheet formation. 9lives 55 and 9lives 80 provide mixed fibre options that use FSC certified virgin fibres as well as pre and post consumer recycled waste. 9lives Digital Silk provides an excellent alternative for use in digital print jobs and is also manufactured from 100% post consumer recycled fibres. The 9lives family leads the way in the recycled paper market and offers excellent alternatives to virgin fibre papers.

The remarkable standards set by 9lives are achieved through market leading technologies that are implemented at Arjowiggins Graphic’s mills in France. The manufacturing process sources 20-30% of its recycled materials from the UK – limiting the impact on landfill sites.

Katie Hungerford, Marketing Communications Manager at Arjowiggins Graphic, comments: “A key element of the Arjowiggins Graphic mission is to enable our customers to easily understand the importance of using sustainable paper solutions. This is one reason why we subscribe to FSC certification: it helps to give consumers clarity on the products that are manufactured from sustainable virgin fibres.

“There is, however, a gap in many people’s knowledge about the difference between being FSC certified and recycled. The use of recycled papers ultimately reduces the need for virgin fibres and new technologies now mean that recycled papers, such as 9lives, provide excellent substitutes for virgin stocks. While the FSC certification is an excellent way of supporting sustainable production we should not neglect the additional benefits of recycled products.”

arJoWigginS Creative Papers, a manufacturer of eco-sustainable creative papers demonstrated its support for FSC Friday recently by running a series of internal communications activities taking place in France, Spain, UK, Chile and Brazil and involving all their employees.

The third annual FSC Friday, organised by the Forest Stewardship Council, raised awareness of the FSC logo as a mark of responsible forestry, as well as promoting the certifi cation to consumers and companies across the globe. On FSC Friday, Arjowiggins Creative Papers

hosted a number of internal events to highlight the benefi ts of FSC labelling to its employees. Internal communication materials were circulated, with posters displayed and events occurring in offi ces for each region highlighted the importance of sustainable forestry. An online quiz consisting of ten questions also tested the staff ’s knowledge and awareness of the FSC. In the UK and France those who successfully completed the quiz were entered into a draw to win mini trees, for example banana trees.

environMental iSSueS are high on everyone’s agenda these days and companies are actively looking

for ways in which they can reduce their environmental impact, while still retaining professional standards and impact. As a result, Epson is working closely with G3S who are developing a range of biodegradable substrates. Launched earlier this year, BioMedia® is its new biodegradable and recyclable PET plastic substrate which is being snapped up by companies around the country for banners and displays.

BioMedia is a clever material developed by G3S. It incorporates a micro-organism which, in dark and moist conditions, cuts through the polymer chain, accelerating the breakdown of the product so that it biodegrades within 2-5 years. It gives the look and has the durability of a laminated sheet but biodegrades. Most laminating fi lms cannot be recycled so BioMedia is the perfect ‘green’ alternative. Copy shops using BioMedia can cut out the lamination step altogether to save costs and time and know that that they are minimizing long-term impact on landfi ll and reducing their environmental impact.

It is these environmental credentials that has led BioMedia to be used by the British Airports Authority and World Duty Free for many advertising campaigns throughout UK airports. BioMedia is available in a range of thickness and fi nishes, including a coated version for higher image quality. As you would expect it is compatible with all Epson Stylus Pro aqueous printers and the 64-in wide Stylus Pro GS6000 eco-solvent type 64” large format inkjet printer.

The Stylus Pro GS6000 is the perfect printer for BioMedia. It uses Epson UltraChrome GS ink, the fi rst Epson eco-solvent type 8-colour inkset, which gives a wide colour gamut and is UV and water-resistant. Importantly for the environment and operators, Epson UltraChrome GS ink does not emit harmful VOCs (volatile organic compounds) and is the fi rst major eco-solvent type ink set launched without the need for a hazard symbol or additional ventilation or purifi cation. This makes the Stylus Pro GS6000 both environmentally and user friendly. Producing Images at 1440 x1440 dpi resolution, the photo realistic,

high-impact quality of the Stylus Pro GS6000 gives excellent results across a wide variety of indoor/outdoor display, signage and POS applications.

Epson is looking at all the ways it can enhance the environmental aspects of its product range across the board as part of its ‘Environmental Vision 2050’ strategy. For example, the Stylus Pro GS6000 was the company’s fi rst large format printer to be supplied with a recycling box for its spent ink cartridges. 100% of the cartridges collected through the scheme are recycled: their plastics components are re-used in manufacturing and construction, while metal parts are smelted and re-used in other industrial applications. Explore BioMedia at www.bioprintmedia.com and the Epson Stylus Pro range at www.epson.co.uk and exceed your vision.

KingSMead Publications carry a superb range of Christmas cards which you buy as blanks to personalise for your customers of youself, by either printing directly onto the card, or our own favourite option – print the greeting on a sheet of paper, fold and glue into the fold to give an ‘upmarket’ feel to the finished article.

At this time of year Kingsmead is happy to supply you with leaflets/booklets showing the available range. It is very easy to then order from the special trade site, but also consider supporting one of the very many charities who always need our help, and this is a speciality of Kingsmead.

Originally formed to sell blank cards to printers, Kingsmead has been raising money for charity since 1984 when fire devastated the beautiful cathedral of York Minster.Using a card that depicted the famous Minster, Kingsmead offered it to local companies and donated the subsequent revenue to the appeal.

Today Kingsmead has developed trusted partnerships with more than 40 charities, from leading international organisations to smaller local causes. Everything you need to sell more cards this Christmas, leaflets, samples and brochures, get your trade pack from xxxxwww.kingsmeadpublications.com

Business Continuity Planning – why bother?“Why bother - It will probably never happen.” Many people consider business continuity something that can be left to chance. Those who take a positive view will consider that business continuity is sufficiently taken care of by backing up IT systems and being cautious in their outlook.

HOPEFULLY, YOUR BUSINESS will be fortunate enough never to

encounter an adverse incident. Even so, there are still many advantages in planning to support your business goals. So why should you invest in a Business Continuity Plan?

When your business is running smoothly with a BCP in place you can…

1. ACHIEVE TANGIBLE COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGEWith over 40% of larger businesses now vendor checking before engaging suppliers, having a BCP consistent with BS25999 gives you a powerful competitive advantage. Customers need assurances that their supply chain won’t let them down, and a supplier with a BCP is an obvious choice over a competitor who poses a risk by not having forward planning in place.

2. POSITION YOURSELF TO TENDER FOR PUBLICLY FUNDED AND HIGHER VALUE CONTRACTSSince the introduction of the Civil Contingencies Act in 2004, all publicly funded work has required that suppliers have a Business Continuity Plan, which has narrowed the choice of suppliers available to the public sector. Having a BCP prequalifi es SMEs and allows them to compete on more equal terms.

3. CREATE OPPORTUNITIES TO REDUCE YOUR INSURANCE PREMIUMSAccording to AIRMIC (Association of Insurance & Risk Managers) - BCP is seen by insurers as a means to improve the quality of the business they underwrite and that BCP helps organisations mitigate impact, recover faster, minimise losses and thus reduce premiums.

4. IMPROVE YOUR CREDIT RATING AND BECOME MORE ATTRACTIVE TO INVESTORS AND PURCHASERSStandard & Poor’s incorporates consideration of the strength of

risk management practices as a key component of its corporate credit ratings methodology. In light of the vital importance of credit and credit worthiness, having a BCP increases your credit rating and presents a be er overall picture to investors, shareholders and banks.

5. IMPROVE YOUR BUSINESS EFFICIENCY AND REDUCE COSTSA BCP audit looks at what functions, systems and facilities are vital to the continuation of your business, allowing you to identify what is surplus to requirements and focus on more efficient work practices.

6. INSPIRE CONFIDENCE IN YOUR STAFFFear of an uncertain future is a fundamental human concern. By being able to visibly demonstrate built-in resilience, you can assure those upon whom you most depend of your long term reliability.

7. COMPLY WITH REGULATION AND SAFEGUARD DIRECTOR’S LIABILITIESBeing a Director is a complex and challenging role. In addition to the task of maintaining a profi table business, today’s directors are faced with frequently changing responsibilities and regulation. Having a BCP helps to signifi cantly reduce a director’s unlimited personal liability.

IF THE WORST HAPPENS YOU WILL BE ABLE TO...8. ENSURE THE SURVIVAL OF YOUR BUSINESSThe primary role of a BCP is to protect a business by preparing and planning against potential denial of access to key business resources. According to AXA, 80% of businesses aff ected by a major incident close within 18 months. Considering the need for temporary premises and equipment, diverted facilities or professional help when disaster has already struck is too late.

9. MINIMISE LOST REVENUE AND DOWNTIMEIn the event of a crisis, the ability to achieve business as usual with minimal downtime will be a key factor in minimising the financial impact to your business. Insurance will cover the replacement of lost and damaged assets, however consider the impact on your business of the loss of productivity, inability to quote for new business or fulfill existing customer orders. Having a BCP in place means that you can minimise downtime and return to trading quicker.

10. PRESERVE YOUR BUSINESS REPUTATIONIn the event of an incident having a clear plan of action can help prevent damage to your reputation. Having a BCP enhances a company’s reputation before, during and after a crisis.Contact: [email protected]

10. Dogs come when you call them. Cats take a message and get back to you when they are good and ready.

9. Dogs will let you give them a bath without taking out a contract on your life.

8. Dogs will bark to wake you up if the house is on fire. Cats will quietly sneak out the back door.

7. Dogs will bring you your slippers or the evening newspaper. Cats might bring you a dead mouse.

6. Dogs will play Frisbee with you all afternoon. Cats will take a three-hour nap.

5. Dogs will sit on the car seat next to you. Cats have to have their own private box or they will not go at all.

4. Dogs will greet you and lick your face when you come home from work. Cats will be mad that you went to work at all.

3. Dogs will sit, lie down, and heel on command. Cats will smirk and walk away.

2. Dogs will tilt their heads and listen whenever you talk. Cats will yawn and close their eyes.

1. Dogs will give you unconditional love forever. Cats will make you pay for every mistake you’ve ever made since the day you were born.

bacK sEat DRivERA passenger in a taxi leaned over to ask the driver a question and tapped him on the shoulder. The driver screamed, lost control of the cab, nearly hit a bus, drove up over the kerb, and stopped just inches from a large plate glass window.

For a few moments everything was silent in the cab, and then the still shaking driver said, “I’m sorry but you scared the daylights out of me.”

The frightened passenger apologized to the driver and said he didn’t realize a mere tap on the shoulder could frighten him so much.

The driver replied, “No, no, I’m sorry, it’s entirely my fault. Today is my first day driving a cab. I’ve been driving a hearse for the last 25 years.”

fat catA famous art collector is walking through the city when he notices a mangy cat lapping milk from a saucer in the doorway of a shop and he does a double take. He recognises that the saucer is extremely old and very valuable, so he walks casually into the shop and offers to buy the cat for two dollars.

The pet shop owner replies “I’m sorry, but the cat isn’t for sale.

The collector says, “Please, I need a hungry cat around the house to catch mice. I’ll pay you twenty dollars for that cat.”

And the owner says “Sold,” and hands over the cat.

The collector continues, “Hey, for the twenty bucks I wonder if you could throw in that old saucer. The cat’s used to it and it’ll save me from having to get a dish.”

And the owner says, “Sorry buddy, but that’s my lucky saucer. So far this week I’ve sold sixty-eight cats.”

tRainERs RULEsA champion jockey is about to enter an important race on a new horse. The horse’s trainer meets him before the race and says,

“All you have to remember with this horse is that every time you approach a jump, you have to shout, “ALLLLEEE OOOP!” really loudly in the horse’s ear. Providing you do that, you’ll be fine”.

The jockey thinks the trainer is mad but promises to shout the command. The race begins and they approach the first hurdle. The jockey ignores the trainer’s ridiculous advice and the horse crashes straight through the centre of the jump.

They carry on and approach the second hurdle. The jockey, somewhat embarrassed, whispers “Aleeee ooop” in the horse’s ear. The same thing happens -- the horse crashes straight through the centre of the jump.

At the third hurdle, the jockey thinks, “It’s no good, I’ll have to do it” and yells, “ALLLEEE OOOP!” really loudly. Sure enough, the horse sails over the jump with no problems. This continues for the rest of the race, but due to the earlier problems the horse only finishes third.

The trainer is fuming and asks the jockey what went wrong. The jockey replies,

“Nothing is wrong with me -- it’s this bloody horse. What is he -- deaf or something?”

The trainer replies, “Deaf?? DEAF?? He’s not deaf -- he’s BLIND!”

“Why don’t you put your money where you mouth is?” he said. “I’ll bet a week’s wages that I can haul something in a wheelbarrow over to the other building that you won’t be able to wheel back.”

“You’re on, old man,” the young man replied. “Let’s see what you’ve got.”

The old man reached out and grabbed the wheelbarrow by the handles. Then nodding to the young man, he said with a smile, “All right. Get in.”

The Judge tells her that her dog only came second because it had hair growing on its chin. He advised her to apply Immac Hair Remover Cream for 2 weeks just before next years competition to ensure 1st place.

So 2 weeks before following years Cruft Show off she goes to the local pharmacy and asks for a tub of Immac Hair Remover. The assistant asks if she has used it before to which she says she hasn’t. Assistant tells her not to wear a tight blouse after application to allow the cream time to work on armpit hair. Lady replies indignantly that the Cream is not for her arm pits but for her Chihuahua.

The assistant replies “in that case madam don’t ride your bike for a couple of days.”

thE Magician anD thE paRRot

There was magician on a cruise ship, and he was really good.

He was performing the highlight of his show when a parrot walked on stage and squawked, ‘’It’s in his sleeve!’’

The magician chased the bird away. The next day the magician was

performing his highlight again (in front of a smaller audience) when the parrot walked onstage and declared, ‘’It’s in his pocket!’’

The next day, as he was performing the highlight, he saw the parrot in the crowd. But before the parrot could ruin the magic trick, the boat crashed into a rock and sank.

The magician was lucky enough to find a board to hang on to. On the other end of the board was the parrot.

They stared at each other for three full days, neither of them saying anything, when suddenly the parrot said, ‘’I give up, what’d you do with the ship?’’

oUt coLD!Three men are sitting in a room smoking cannabis. After a few spliffs they run out of gear. One of the men stands up and says, ‘Look, we’ve got loads more tobacco, I’ll just nip into the kitchen and make one of my specialty spliffs.’

Off he goes into the kitchen where he takes some of the spices from the spice rack, grinds them up and rolls them into a spliff. On his return he hands it to one of his smoking partners who lights it and takes a long drag. Within seconds he passes out.

Ten minutes go by, then an hour, and he’s still out cold, so they decide to take him to the hospital.

On arrival he is wheeled into intensive care. The doctor returns to his friends and asks,‘So what was he doing then - Cannabis?’ ‘Well sort of’, replies one of the guys, ‘But we ran out of gear, so I made a home-made spliff.’

‘Oh’ replies the doctor, ‘so what did you put in it?’ ‘Um, a bit of cumin, some turmeric, garam masala and a couple of other spices.’ comes the answer

The doctor sighs, ‘Well that explains it.He’ll be here for 3 weeks before he

wakes up.’ ‘Why, what’s wrong with him?’ asks one of the men.

The doctor replies… ‘He’s in a korma’.
