Write It! Lab Station 1 Directions

Each member of the group will complete each of the task on the lab sheet in complete sentences.

It is recommended that you have completed, before completing this station.

- Explore/ FOCUS Sheet- WS - Characteristic Properties of Matter (pg 14 IN)- Notes - Characteristic Properties of Matter (pg 15 IN)

If you have not complete these, have your group help you fill in any missing information, so that you can use these resources on this lab.

Write It! Station 1 DirectionsWrite It! Task Directions -Review your science journal (the Explore, WS, and Notes for this concept) before completing tasks 2-4.

Write It! Task 2 -What is the difference between a physical and chemical property of matter?

Write It! Task 3 -What is characteristic property of matter (what makes it different from other properties of matter)?

Write It! Task 4 -Why are all chemical properties of matter also characteristic properties?

Explore It! Station 2 DirectionsDirections:1. Copy the table shown below to your lab sheet. 2. Then read these directions out loud to your group - when your group has

heard and understood the directions see your teacher for the materials.3. Use a toothpick to transfer a small amount of each powder into 4 different

wells Leave enough room to add test solution so that it doesn’t spill outside of the well (make sure each toothpick is used with only one type of powder).

4. Use the dropper to add indicator to each powder and record the color for each (do not touch the powder with dropper).

5. Rinse off each well in the sink and dry with a paper towel.

Describe the color of the indicator for each substance

Illustrate It! Lab Station 3 Directions

Each member of the group will draw a quick

sketch on the lab sheet that shows they

understand the concept that is being taught.

Use the colored pencils and markers that are

provided.

The directions for the sketch are provided on

the task card at the table.

Illustrate It! Station 3 Task Cards

Illustrate It! 1 -Review your science journal for physical and chemical properties.Your science journal will have the Explore, WS, and Notes for this concept.

Illustrate It! 2 -1. Illustrate an example of a physical

property. 2. See your science journal for

examples of physical properties.3. Include a caption - that describes

what you are drawing and be sure you use at least 3 colors - besides black, grey, and white.

Illustrate It! 3 -1. Illustrate an example of a chemical

property. 2. See your science journal for

examples of chemical properties.3. Include a caption - that describes

what you are drawing and be sure you use at least 3 colors - besides black, grey, and white.

Assess It! Station 4 Directions

It is recommended that you have completed

- Explore/ FOCUS Sheet- WS - Characteristic Properties of Matter (pg 14 IN)- Notes - Characteristic Properties of Matter (pg 15 IN)

Before answering the questions at the Assess It! Station. If you have not completed these work with your group to get these completed.

Each member will answer the questions from

the task cards on the lab sheet

Assess It! Station 4 Task Cards

Assess It! 1 -Which of the following is a characteristic property of matter?A. colorB. massC. ageD. weight

Assess It! 2 -Which of the following is a chemical property of matter?A. acidityB. odorC. electrical conductivityD. color

Assess It! 3 - Acids have the ability to react with bases to become salts. This is a statement about the acids' ________.A. chemical propertiesB. physical propertiesC. chemical and physical propertiesD. visual properties

Assess It! 4 -Which of the following would NOT affect an object's characteristic properties?A. The object is exposed to great heat.B. The object is exposed to great

pressure.C. The object is cut into tiny pieces.D. The object undergoes radioactive

decay.

Read It! Station 5 DirectionsEach member of the group will read the passage and answer the questions from the task cards on the lab sheet in the Read It! section. It is important to remember that the answers will come directly from the reading passage.

Read It! Station 5 Directions

Read It! 1 -Which of the following best describes a physical property of matter?A. The physical properties of matter are the things that

can be measured and observed without changing the substance itself.

B. Physical properties include solubility, melting point, boiling point, and electrical conductivity.

C. Chemical properties relate to the ability of a substance to form chemical bonds with other substances or break bonds within the substance.

D. During a chemical reaction, a substance changes into a different substance.

Read It! 2 -Which of the following is the best description of solubility?A. The ability of a material to transmit an

electrical current.B. The ability of one substance to dissolve

another substance.C. The ability to form bonds with oxygen

and burn.D. The number and arrangement of the

subatomic particles.

Read It! 3 - Why aren’t size and mass characteristic properties of matter?A. Because the amount of the sample

does not affect the properties it has.B. They are things that can be measured

and observed without changing the substance itself.

C. Because they do not describe the ability of a substance to form chemical bonds with other substances.

Read It! 4 -Which of the following explain why boiling and freezing are physical properties of matter?A. Because boiling and freezing are

physical changes that can be reversed. B. Neither boiling nor freezing changes a

substance into a different substanceC. Both A and BD. None of the above.

Organize It! Station 6 Directions

It is recommended that you have completed the following stations before working at this station.

- Explore/ FOCUS Sheet- WS - Characteristic Properties of Matter (pg 14 IN)- Notes - Characteristic Properties of Matter (pg 15 IN)

If you have not completed these with your group to complete these.

Each group will organize the cards. Each of the cards will be used. Once you are complete please have the teacher sign off on your lab sheet.

Please mix up the cards again before the next group arrives at this station.

Organize It! Station 6 Task CardSuppose that you are given two mysterious pieces of metal. Which of the physical properties on the cards must be the same for both metals if they were the same? 1. Organize the cards into those that must be the same and those that

can be different. 2. Create list of what measurements would be the same and would be

different on your lab sheet.3. Please shuffle the cards before you leave this station.4. The cards read: Mass, Density, Height, Color, Volume, Melting Point,

and Electrical Conductivity
