    Facial expressions Facial expressions are perhaps

    the most important non-verbal

    way in which emotions aremanifested.

    The raising of eyebrows mayindicate amazement or alarm.

    Lowering of eyebrow mayindicate stress or thinking.

    A smile may indicate approval.

    Raising one eyebrow may

    indicate sarcasm.

    Voice intonation

    You raise the pitch of your voice

    at the end of a sentence.

    You raise the volume of yourvoice when you are angry or in

    You lower your voice when you

    are comforting someone or

    Tightly crossing your arms overyour chest may give theimpression of anger or tension.

    A lean forwards with separatedarms and legs communicateswarmth and friendliness.

    Slouched shoulders mayconvey a lack of confidence.

    In contrast, good posture withthe shoulders rolled back in arelaxed position make it morelikely that others will view youas self confident.

    Proximity Preferences for spacing will

    influence where the people sitor stand.

    If you remain distant from

    others when you speak tothem, you may unintentionallycommunicate indifference ordisinterest.

    If you approach people too

    closely, they may feeluncomfortable.

    People who like each othertend to stand closer togetherthan people who do not likeeach other.
