4-H is the Youth Development program of North Carolina Cooperative Extension. The Currituck County 4-H program offers Summer Fun - a series of educational camps designed to build life skills through shared experiences and hands-on learning. Camps are open to ages specific to the age appropriateness of the activities. 4-H Enrollment 4-H Enrollment is required for participation in any in-person program conducted by the 4-H/Extension Staff. Miniature GardeningDate: June 17Time: 1:00-4:00pmAges: 8-13Cost $5Location: Currituck Extension CenterMiniature Gardens-where creativity and gardening come together. Participants will learn all the insand outs of miniature gardens: plant selection and care, basic design principles, garden themes, andinspiration and ideas. Each youth will be given the materials (plants, soil container, and miniatureelements) to create their own miniature garden to take home.

We will provide equipment and bait, or bring your own if you would like. You can attend oneor both.

Come Sail Away with 4-HDate: June 29Time: 9:30am-4:30pmAges: 11-14Cost: $10Location: Depart from the Extension OfficeGear up for a great day of fun in the sun and sea! Learn the basics of sailing (knots, rigging and techniques)with River City Sailing and then spend the afternoon sailing. We will have a scavenger hunt at the Museum ofthe Albemarle in the morning, a picnic lunch in the park and then setting sail in the afternoon. Youth mustbe able to swim in order to register for the program and parents will have to sign a River City Sailingwaiver .

Car BasicsDates: June 24 Time: 9:00-12:00pmAges: 14-18Cost: $5Location: Currituck Extension CenterThis workshop is designed to teach you the basics of care and maintenance. Learn your way around a car! We will learnhow to check the oil and other fluid levels, change the oil, change a flat tire, basic car maintenance and care. It couldsave you some breakdowns and avoid costly repairs.

Disc Golf CampDates: Wednesdays- June 23-August 4Time: 9:00am-12:00pmAges: 8-12Cost: $5 per sessionLocation: CCRC, 184 Milburn Sawyer Rd, Powells Point NCWant to sharpen up your disc golf scores or just learn the sport in general? Join from at the Currituck County RuralCenter in Powells Point to learn all there is to know about Disc Golf. We will have experienced disc golf playerssharing techniques and demonstrating skills about playing the sport. The CCRC has a newly designed 18 holecourse to provide a great playing experience for both beginners and the experienced. ***** Campers will beprovided disc to use for camp.

Wonders of the WindDates: June 29Time: 12:00-4:00pmAges: 10-13Cost: $5Location: Depart From Currituck Extension CenterTravel to Jennette's Pier to learn how to harness energy from the wind, advantages and disadvantages ofwind energy, the importance of clean wind and ideal locations to install wind turbines to maximize energyoutput. Through construction of their own “turbine” and discussions about alternative energy, participantsin this program gain an understanding of how this technology works and its importance for future energygeneration.

Citizenship For BeginnersDates: July 1Time: 8:30am-12:00pmAges: 5-7 (must have completed kindergarten) Cost: $3Location: Currituck Extension CenterDo you know the state mammal, or know the correct way to fold the flag? Come learn about our great state ofNC, as well as some important dos and don’ts when it comes to our American Flag. We will learn some patrioticsongs and meet some county officials. If your child is required to ride in a booster car seat please provide thatwhen you drop your child off.

Cooking 101-Fantastic FlatbreadsDates: July 1Time: 1:00-4:30pmAges: 11-15Cost: $5Location: Currituck Extension CenterYouth ages 11-15 will learn how to make flatbread dough and experiment with a variety of flavor combinationsto top their flatbreads. Each participant will make three different flatbreads to take home and share with thefamily and will have learned all the knowledge and skills to become your go-to chef for a quick, nutritious familymeal.

Cooking With Confidence-Snack ScienceDates: July 7Time: 8:30am-4:30pmAges: 8-13Cost: $5Location: Currituck Extension Center Peek into the science behind food. While learning about food safety, food chemistry, and where food comesfrom, They will follow the clues to solve a mystery and find new clues that unlock new challenges. Therewill be 4 different science topics-each with its own mystery to solve. We will also have a picnic so allparticipants need to bring a bag lunch.

Babysitting BackpacksDates: July 8 & 9 (two-day workshop)Time: 8:30am-12:00pmAges: 12-18Cost: $5Location: Currituck Extension CenterGet ready to become the neighborhood's favorite babysitter! This workshop is designed to help youth gainknowledge of babysitting and taking care of those little ones. We will discuss ways to entertain them, as well aswhat to do in the case of an emergency. Participants will get a demonstration of CPR, and go through the interviewprocess as if they were preparing for taking care of someone's treasured children.

A Day in the Life of Marine FisheriesDate: July 16Time: 9:00am-1:00pmAges: 8-12Cost: $3Location: CCRC, 184 Milburn Sawyer Rd, Powells Point NCDo you have a child that is interested in fishing, and marine science that would like to learn more about NC MarineFisheries, or what types of fish we have here in our local Currituck Sound? If so, sign up for this fun educationalworkshop to learn more about fishing in our local area.

Exploring Currituck County-Historic Corolla ParkDate: July 19Time: 9:00am-2:30pmAges: 12-18Cost: $5Location: Depart from Currituck Extension CenterJoin us as we travel to Corolla and experience the Historic Corolla Park which includes the Whalehead Club, OuterBanks Center for Wildlife Education and of course, the Currituck Beach Lighthouse. We will meet at NC CooperativeExtension - Currituck Center at 120 Community Way in Barco, and depart at 9 am. We will travel to Corolla andexplore and experience the park. Be sure to pack a lunch and we will have our lunch at the park.

No Sew Sewing Dates: July 14Time: 8:30-12:00pmAges: 5-7 (must have completed kindergarten) Cost: $5Location: Currituck Extension CenterAre you a crafty kid that enjoys making things like your very own pillow or lap blanket? What about learning howto sew on a button? If you are, this workshop is perfect for you. Please join us for this fun, hands-on workshop thatwill teach you how to sew on a button as we make our very own sock puppet. Youth will also go home with theirown fleece pillow and lap blanket.

Pier Fishing 101-Jennette's PierDate: July 20Time: 12-4:00pmAges: 5-7 (must have completed kindergarten) Cost: $5Location: Depart from Currituck County CenterYouth will learn the basic skills necessary to catch a fish. Students learn how to cast, reel and the proper catch and releasetechniques, while fishing on the pier. All bait, tackle and rods are included in the lesson. Please make sure to feed your childlunch before you drop them off because we will not be stopping for lunch. If your child is required to ride in a booster carseat please provide that at drop off.

Muffin MagicDate: July 21Time: 9-12pmAges: 6-9Cost: $5Location: Currituck Extension CenterMuffins are a fast treat to make for breakfast, light dinner or an anytime snack. Come let your little one join us for some goodold "Berry Delicious" muffin baking. This workshop will include how to be safe in the kitchen and how to use kitchen utensilswhen making delicious fresh strawberry and blueberry muffins from scratch.

Garden PizzaDate: July 22Time: 8:30-12pmAges: 10-13Cost: $5Location: Currituck Extension CenterParticipants will learn how to make homemade pizza. They will make dough and watch it rise, and then we will take a walkout to the community garden and see what veggies we can use for our toppings. We will talk about knife skills and howyou cut up the vegetables, along with how to measure the wet and dry ingredients to make the crust. Each participant willmake their own pizza to take home.

Sounds of the Sea-Jennette's PierDate: July 27Time: 12-4:00 pm Ages: 5-7 (must have completed kindergarten)Cost: $5Location: Depart from Currituck Extension CenterIn this program, youth will discover how important sound is to ocean animals and what sounds are made by our largest tosmallest marine organisms. After exploring a multitude of sounds in the classroom, participants will have the chance to deploytheir own hydrophone over the side of the pier and see if they can determine what makes all the different sounds.

Cooking 201-A Taste of ItalyDate: July 28Time: 1-4:30pmAges: 11-15Cost: $5Location: Currituck Extension CenterFood is the one thing that connects people globally. Learn about our world one dish at a time! Join us for the first stop on our triparound the world. Youth will learn about unique Italian cooking techniques, experience recipes native to Italy, and discover otherfacts about this unique culture. Each participant will make three dishes using their new found skills and also receive a minicookbook chock full of Italian recipes to try later at home.

Happy Trails Horse CampDate: July 22 & 23 (two-day camp)Time: 9am-3pm (both days)Ages: 7-12Cost: $15Location: CCRC, 184 Milburn Sawyer Rd, Powells Point, NCParticipants will learn basic horse care, riding techniques, different horse breeds and learn about other 4-H horse programs thatdo not require you to own a horse. Participants will need to bring a bag lunch, a snack and wear closed toe shoes. Bottled waterwill be provided.

National Fish Hatchery-EdentonDate: July 29Time: 9am-2:30pmAges: 10-13Cost: $3Location: Depart from Currituck Extension CenterHave you ever wondered how the NC Marine Fisheries keep our ponds and rivers stocked with healthy fish? Well if so, thisfield trip is just for you! We will visit the National Fish Hatchery in Edenton, NC and learn about the program they have thathelps keep the striped bass population up in our local ponds and rivers. Participants will also get to see the indoor aquariumand get to feed the fish that are there in the ponds. We will have a picnic lunch before we return to the Extension office.Please pack a bag lunch that does not require refrigeration. We will provide bottled water.

4-H Field Trip-AquariumDate: Aug 3Time: 9am-3pmAges: 5-7 (Must have completed kindergarten)Cost: $5Location: Depart from Currituck Extension CenterThis field trip will be an exciting adventure to the NC Aquarium located in Manteo NC. Participants will explore theexhibits; from the cute playful otters to the great big sharks. Participants are asked to wear closed toe shoes that arecomfy for walking and bring a bag lunch that they will eat at the picnic pavilion close to the aquarium. If your child isrequired to ride in a booster car seat please provide that at drop off.

Working Worms-VermicompostingDate: Aug 4Time: 1-4pmAges: 8-14Cost: $5Location: Currituck Extension CenterComposting is a great way to reduce your family's waste, save money, and encourage your children to learn aboutnature and gardening. You'll turn your food scraps and household organic matter into nutrient rich organic matterinstead of sending it to a landfill or a dump. Vermicomposting is a fun and interactive way for youth to learn aboutrecycling, ecosystems and nature. “Working Worms” is a hands-on activity for youth to learn about composting,ecosystems, recycling and the lifecycle of epigeic worms. Each participant will build a composting worm bin completewith working worms to take home.

Spice Up Your Life-Flavors of the WorldDate: Aug 5Time:1-4pmAges: 10-16Cost: $5Location: Currituck Extension CenterSpices are small but mighty. They are holders of deep flavor and givers of taste, scent, and color to our food. Jointhe Currituck 4-H Staff as we explore the wonderful world of spices. Learn what spices are, how to use the scentand flavor of different spices to turn ordinary dishes into spectacular family favorites , and learn how to combinespices with foods to make flavors pop! Youth will put their new found knowledge to use and make three differentspice mixes to take home.

4-H Trip to the Zoo Date: Aug 4Time: 8:30am-3:30pmAges: 5-7 (must have completed kindergarten) Cost: $5Location: Depart from Currituck Extension Center Join Currituck 4-H on a field trip to the Virginia Zoo, located in Norfolk Virginia. We will explore the zoo, watch theanimals, learn about their habitats and more. Youth are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing and closed toeshoes as we will be doing lots of walking. We also ask that they bring a bag lunch to eat at the picnic area at the zoo.
